Let's see what happens after the budget. If it's badly received by the markets and Starmer needs to sack Reeves then the countdown timer has started for him too.

Reeves out, Bell in. That will make the bond markets happy.
More likely a straight swap with Yvette Cooper, who has an economics background like Reeves and avoids upsetting the Cabinet's sex balance, unless Starmer wants a wider reshuffle.

There is something deeply romantic about obscure railway lines in mainland europe at night in the summer

The humid buzz of insects around a lonely station light. The stop where no one gets on and no one gets off, as the moon shines down. Two interrailing girls all excited down the carriage as they open a beer that got warm and fizzy. Strange languages. Hints of Slav

The equivalent in the USA must be gas stations on road trips on state roads to nowhere on a lazy hot afternoon. Weird forms of beef jerky. A fat woman at the til full of life and friendliness. Someone kicks a tyre in the dust outside, as you stare in the enormous fridge then buy a six pack of craft ale

When I was at the train station in Munich a few years back, well you can see how the idea of the EU sprang up !
I used to misread the no-smoking "Rauchfrei Bahnhof" signs as "Reichfrei Bahnhof" and thought - an Imperial Free Railway Station, that's cool.

I think the EU ought to have free cities, obvs the big international ones like Berlin or Amsterdam but also on the borders (eg Görlitz/Zgorzolec or Cieszyn/Těšin).

What we gonna do when alt-right populism fails utterly to deliver on its snake oil promises and falls into utter contempt?
The 600,000 adults scheduled for deportation will become 6,000,000. And when that doesn't stop the rapes and crime (mostly committed by people like us...) it'll be anyone who are, or look, different.
Yes once removing migrants doesn’t do the job of cheering up the public they’ll move onto the next scapegoats . The Trumpification of the UK will go into warp drive with Reform in power .

Mister @Taz votes Labour, I believe

A lot of people on here are hyperventilating at the prospect of a populist right party gaining power. They should ask themselves why that is now a very real prospect - because of decades of grotesque errors by the Tories AND Labour, especially on immigration, but other things too

Anyway it’s now time for us all to support Big Nigel and pray that he succeeds. Coz after him - if he fails - it might be something much worse (of left OR right)

Coincidentally I’ve just read a guide to Austria and it claims Arnold Schwarzenegger is “probably the most famous Austrian in history”

    Er….
They won’t want to publicise the other famous Austrian.
Call me Mr Elitist but I’d also put Mozart just a notch above Arnie. Much as I love Predator, &c
    There is an argument that Mozart isn’t Austrian as there wasn’t a country of Austria at the time, Salzburg was a city state allied to Australia-Hungarian Empire and Mozart and his contemporaries thought of themselves as “German” hence the line;

“The greatest trick the Austrians ever pulled was convincing the world that Hitler was German and Mozart was Austrian.”
They really did get away with it, the Austrians. “Oh we’re just this cute alpine country, we never did nuffink, have a pretzel”

Whereas they were a fundamental and eager part of the Third Reich, and loads of leading Nazis - starting with Adolf - were Austrian. They even dodged communism despite the red army seizing half the country
It’s a very shifty country. Vienna is like an entrepôt of espionage and shady business where the Russians were never really restricted during the Cold War onwards. I think the country sold its soul, being neutral and allowing open Soviet behaviour in return for their wealth to be unaffected, the streets beautiful, none of that expensive dirty work of being a good ally.

I know of a good number of Russian businesses and individuals who relied on Austria giving them a cloak of respectability for basing themselves there.
Yes, even now there’s a shadiness to Austria. A bit like the Swiss but worse because of the overt Nazi links

I happened to be in Graz last year, on Austrian National Day. Ended up having a good session in a bar where the landlady made her own vermouth, and very good Negronis as a result. The locals were singing Austrian folk and pop sings (politically uncontroversial, as far as I could tell).

Now, I would have thought Austrian National Day would have commemorated the day Jan Sobieski showed up at the gates of Vienna with 20,000 winged hussars and rescued them from the Turks, but actually it's the day Stalin said they could be a country again, as long as they were neutral. Hence Austria's place on the front line of the cold war
I’m on the evening train to Graz right now. Spending a couple of days there. Is it nice? I’m doing a tour of Styria for Mantickler Monthly. Styria is widely known as “the Tuscany of Central Europe” tho it should be noted that I basically made that up when I pitched the idea to my editor
Yes it is. Locals are friendly, and it's a lot cheaper than Vienna, seems to have quite a lot of EU expat residents. Very pretty, scenic train ride from Vienna, pity you are doing it after dark. The Landeszeughaus is a 17th century armoury and UNESCO World Heritage site, has a nice castle up the hill in town and Schloß Schellenburg just outside. Have a Negroni at Vintage Cafe Bar. Syria also continues into Slovenia - the former Austrian crownland was split on linguistic lines after WW1. I didn't get out of Graz to explore the countryside but I did have a day trip to Maribor.
    Ah cool. Danke

I’m getting a tour of the whole province so should be interesting. I thought I’d possibly gone off travel a bit - hence my summer at home - but it might just be because my last two trips were rural Bulgaria and Luxembourg. Not exactly heart racing

    So many fewer cars too.

Of course roads are considerably safer now than they were when we were growing up. Much fewer fatalities, not more.
Only because the children and other human beings have been driven off the roads and into their homes or the family car.

Although looking at the Uzbek rail app it seems it is easier to book trains in Sept/Oct than people say, a couple of trains are sold out but there is plenty of availability in 2nd class

Montenegro is glorious inland. Don’t miss Durmitor and the canyons!

And yes the Uzbek high speed trains are excellent. A wonderful way to get around boring countryside to amazing cities. It’s Spanish rolling stock so 2nd class is totally fine

That's the trouble with trying to nudge the Overton Window. Once it's moving, it can be blooming hard to stop it again.

If you plan to deport N people, someone will come along and ask why not N+1? Or N+N?

I lived in Vienna. It did have a heavy atmosphere.
I did a job there and stayed in the Bristol Hotel. I enjoyed it though it wouldn't be in my top 10 EU capitals
It used to be the centre of a great empire, didn't it, but is now just the capital of a small, relatively unimportant country. So the physical grandeur, although impressive, is at the same time turgid and kind of sad. Like Blackpool.

Max Perutz. Ludwig Wittgenstein. Off the top of my head.
Off the top of my head. Just randomly -

    1. Adolf Hitler – born in Braunau am Inn, Austria; Führer of Nazi Germany.
    2. Arthur Seyss-Inquart – Austrian Chancellor at the Anschluss; Reichskommissar for the Netherlands.
    3. Ernst Kaltenbrunner – born in Ried, Upper Austria; head of the Reich Main Security Office (RSHA) after Heydrich.
    4. Baldur von Schirach – Gauleiter of Vienna; Reich Youth Leader (Hitlerjugend).
    5. Odilo Globocnik – Gauleiter of Vienna, later SS & Police Leader in Lublin; a key organizer of Aktion Reinhard (extermination of Polish Jews).
    6. Alois Brunner – Adolf Eichmann’s deputy; responsible for deportations of Jews from France, Slovakia, and Greece.
    7. Franz Stangl – Commandant of Sobibor and Treblinka extermination camps.
    8. Franz Novak – Eichmann’s transport officer, organized deportation trains.
    9. Karl Silberbauer – SS officer who arrested Anne Frank in Amsterdam.
    10. Amon Göth – commandant of the Plaszów concentration camp, depicted in Schindler’s List
    11. Adolf Eichmann – born in Solingen, Germany, but raised in Linz; chief architect of the Holocaust transports.
    12. August Eigruber – Gauleiter of Upper Danube (Oberdonau); executed for Mauthausen crimes.
    13. Franz Josef Huber – SS and Gestapo leader in Vienna; oversaw deportations.

I won't be able to fly my flag of St George anymore? That's a real blow.

Call me Mr Elitist but I’d also put Mozart just a notch above Arnie. Much as I love Predator, &c
    There is an argument that Mozart isn’t Austrian as there wasn’t a country of Austria at the time, Salzburg was a city state allied to Australia-Hungarian Empire and Mozart and his contemporaries thought of themselves as “German” hence the line;

A leering face hiding behind the dirndl skirts
I lived in Vienna. It did have a heavy atmosphere.
    This means nothing to me.
    Ure a card, you are.

Unfortunately, the reality is that Farage will do almost nothing to protect Britain. That is obvious.

Poor Farage, he's not extreme enough for Musk, but also he's not extreme enough for Musk? Jesus Christ!
That's the trouble with trying to nudge the Overton Window. Once it's moving, it can be blooming hard to stop it again.

If you plan to deport N people, someone will come along and ask why not N+1? Or N+N?
We deport people right now. The Labour government boasts about it. Tens of thousands per year. So it’s not like this is some moral rubicon

All Farage is doing is promising to seriously ramp up the speed and seriousness

I won't be able to fly my flag of St George anymore? That's a real blow.

    There is an argument that Mozart isn’t Austrian as there wasn’t a country of Austria at the time, Salzburg was a city state allied to Australia-Hungarian Empire and Mozart and his contemporaries thought of themselves as “German” hence the line;

A leering face hiding behind the dirndl skirts
I lived in Vienna. It did have a heavy atmosphere.
In Bill Bryson's "Neither here nor there" he talks of an apparently blissful evening as a youth in an Alpine bar, along with some German friends he had made who were fortunately able to hear what tbe Austrians were saying in German about them.
Later, the Germans would extol all the virtues of Austria, wilfully lamenting the one bad thing about it - that it was "full.of fucking Austrians".

But I have never been so cannot comment first hand. I'm hoping for Germany and/or Austria for next year's summer holiday.

    Everyone is leading with Farage

The media have Farage and Trump as their go to news stories

As for Badenoch wait to see her counter proposals at the conference in September

And Starmer is doing his best impersonation of Farage but he cannot out do the real thing

Not that I want Farage anywhere near government

Her favourite movie is the one about Lauda vs that other bloke.

I won't be able to fly my flag of St George anymore? That's a real blow.

There's no Josef Fritzl in that list, who was the worst Austrian in history.
He was ace at making crepes.

So that's got to count for something.
I even mentioned Fritzl in a header.

As for receiving the backing of Truss and the Trussites that is a bit like receiving parenting advice from Josef Fritzl. Given how disastrously and short the Truss premiership was the Trussites might be best to keep their support quiet for any candidate quiet.

PS Why are the BBC leading with Farage? Not smart of Badenocjh to ape him i'd have thought.

    Everyone is leading with Farage

The media have Farage and Trump as their go to news stories

As for Badenoch wait to see her counter proposals at the conference in September

And Starmer is doing his best impersonation of Farage but he cannot out do the real thing

Not that I want Farage anywhere near government
The BBC obviously haven’t noticed that Farage wants to defund them.

Just been watching it on telly.
Quite apart from itsmany shortcomings as a format, the atmosphere seemed curiously flat. Northern v Mamchester seems to excite the crowd a lot less than Yorkshire v Lancashire in the T20, and the ground is a lot emptier. Granted its a Tuesday night so less good for generating crowds. But even so.

But not nearly enough to account for it, given the huge increase in numbers of cars.

The motorways and dual carriageways are, in any case, part of the problem. They sterilise great tracts [erdit] across path networks. Look, for instance, at Dorchester (to give an example some of us will know). The ring road has made it much more difficult to take walks out of town. To Maiden Castle, for instance.

Didn’t Hitler have to take German citizenship/nationality to stand for President?
I would have said Mozart is the most famous Austrian.
It's an interesting question. There are loads of people who would have heard of Mozart, but not be able to name a single piece of music by him. I'd guess that many more people would have heard of Arnie, *and* be able to name a film by him. Which makes sense, as he is much more culturally significant *at the moment*.

An interesting question is where they will be placed in 100 years: would Arnie's fame fade as Mozart remains at the same level, or will Arnie be known like another Chaplin?
I don’t believe that’s true. Arnie’s fame is fading. His last big movie was two decades ago? Three?

Young people have likely never heard of him

Whereas Mozart is MOZART. You’ve heard of him even if you can’t go into details
Young people have likely never heard of him. Falco's rap (in German!) was, what, 39 years ago?

I have come to the conclusion that we hate children as much as we hate immigrants. Was told about a local parish in Kent where the Parish Council leader (over 80) has had the chains of the swings cut (for health and safety issues!). They are also sitting on about £60k of grant which they could spend on replacing the equipment but the leader wants to send the money back to the County instead of improvements.

So high house prices, high rents, expensive school clothing and pay for your own tertiary education while inviting the tertiary educated from other countries. We've lost all reason - by choice - as we could have had family supportive policies.

    Yep.
No ball games. No speed restrictions. I'm intimidated by them hanging out in groups.
And why oh why do they never play out?
I saw this today. It made me sad. It turns out to be a story which is 18 years old but I think it still has currency.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-462091/How-children-lost-right-roam-generations.html

It reflects my own experience - at 8, I had the whole of our estate* and the fields behind in which to roam, but we don't let our own kids roam that far or operate that independently. I'd like to have given them more independence, but the culture is just that it isn't done, and if you let your 8 year old get to and from school on their own you'd soon get some questions from the authorities.

That said, I'm happy to report that our kids still achieve independence, just slightly later: my 15 year old frequently goes into Manchester or other locations reachable by public transport, and has had a day out to York over the holidays with friends and without adult supervision, and is looking for other opportunities; and my 13 year old isn't far behind her.

*it was a housing estate. I'm not some duke.
That is one of my standard thought-provoker images to start conversations  .
You may be aware of an 11-year old child who got killed while cycling to school in Edinburgh. Bin lorry driver convicted, had spent most of his shift on his phone. 12 month driving ban.

There were hundreds of comments at the time and recently at the sentence that pinned the blame on the parents for allowing him to cycle to school. It's seen as negligence nowadays.
I'd read that in one US state it was against the law for parents to leave a 10 year old on their own for a few hours. I don't know if that is true, but I am curious at what age it would be considered ok, regardless of what the law is. Teenager ok, but lower than that unacceptable?
My son is eleven. From ten, we'd leave him alone for an hour in the house whilst we go out for a run. I wouldn't extend that much at the moment - not because I don't trust him, but about how he'd react to the unexpected. You get subtle cues he's ready: a parcel delivery guy came a while back, and I asked him to take it in. It wasn't for us, but he knew the neighbours, accepted the parcel, and locked the door afterwards.

Kids grow up at different rates. They are individuals. You can trust some to do some things at a certain age, but not others. But those kids might not be ready for other things. Some adults might not be...

And that's the problem with such laws. Some kids might be emotionally and physically ready to have sex at 16. Some people are not in such a state at 20, or older. But there has to be an age, and unlike driving, there is no test.

As a parent, you just have to look at your kid and ask "What are they ready for?"
    Isn't the law 14?

Pretty sure it was the law when I was a kid.
"children aged 12 or older should only be left alone for long periods of time when both the child feels safe and the parent feels they’re ready
children under 12 are rarely mature enough to be left alone for long periods of time
babies, toddlers and very young children should never be left alone"

    https://www.gov.uk/law-on-leaving-your-child-home-alone

Which comes down to many factors, including the definition of "long periods of time".

I think that's about right for our son. Others may differ.
Is that the law or just advice.
    Absolutely no idea.
It says the law is that it’s an offence to leave a child alone if it places them at risk.

But gives me age in law.

I don't know where I got 14 from growing up??? Has it changed?

I think you probably need to show you did a reasonable internal 'risk assessment'.

For instance, leaving a ten year old in their home alone for an hour is very different to leaving them alone for the same period in a strange place. Allowing them to walk to the local shop 200 metres away is very different to letting them walk alone in a strange town.

    So what is 'reasonable'?

I fear this is key to attitude towards the Madeleine McCann disappearance: was it reasonable to leave a three and five year old alone in an unfamiliar hotel room for a few hours, even if that room was partially in sight?

As another (and less tragic) example: a few weeks ago, staff at an Ironman race noticed a 9-year old boy hanging around in a hospitality tent. It turns out his dad had left him there whilst he raced for up to 18 hours. That, in my mind, was utterly unreasonable.

    https://www.adirondackdailyenterprise.com/news/local-news/2025/07/police-unattended-child-leads-to-mid-ironman-race-arrest/
When we were 9 or 10 in the school holidays, we'd take the train to Southend for the day, or get a Red Bus Rover ticket and ride all over London, and not a mobile phone in sight, let alone a social worker.

No list of Austrians is complete with Godel.
Should there be a list of Austrians who aren't in a list?
    I thought Liszt was Hungarian.
Born in the Burgenland in what is now Austria (but was then the Kingdom of Hungary).

If Obama or Biden had said this, it would be rightfully understood as them arrogating dictatorial authority to themselves, it would be the only thing anyone in the media or opposition would talk about for a year, and it would probably end their presidency. You have to understand, though: 43% of people in the US will believe this. They also believe that the US deficit is being eliminated. And that they will get a special multithousand dollar cheque later this year as a result of all the massive savings Elon and co found.

The fact it's not true at all is of absolutely no relevence.

Polling suggests that some of them don't believe it any more. If that continues, it should be enough in a democratic system to produce a correction. Whether democracy in the US will survive another year is a different question.

Trump: Foreign nations are paying hundreds of billions of dollars straight into our treasury. Numbers nobody has seen before. Many of those countries, just to sit at the table, are paying us hundreds of billions of dollars. Trillions of dollars is coming into our country. Trillions.

You have to understand, though: 43% of people in the US will believe this. They also believe that the US deficit is being eliminated. And that they will get a special multithousand dollar cheque later this year as a result of all the massive savings Elon and co found.

The fact it's not true at all is of absolutely no relevence.

When they go the grocery store. When they put gas in the car. When they see their paycheck.
