The underlying discontent among rebellious and even loyal Labour MPs stems from what many would say is a pathetically late discovery: that what’s driving so much government policy is Rachel Reeves’s fiscal rules and the absolute power of the Office for Budget Responsibility in determining whether she is breaching those rules or not.
...
So whatever the outcome of the vote tomorrow on the welfare reforms, Reeves and Starmer are now under enormous pressure - probably irresistible pressure - to lose their OBR religion.
Translation: With enough pressure we think we can get the government to borrow even more money than we do already at the expense of generations who are not yet born and don't vote. Labour won't be in power for ever anyway so we will leave it to be someone else's problem. We shall then blame them for the fiscal mess.
I think the translation is - I didn't spend x years campaigning to be a Labour MP for you to screw the finances of core labour voters..
l...
..want to screw the country's finances instead.
We are going to continually return to my point that the biggest mistake of this Government was to not reverse the 4p of vaguely budgetted for Employee NI cuts..
Their biggest mistake was to so concentrate on the Ming Vase strategy that they had no financial flexibility by pledges on income tax, NI etc. They simply had no plan, and even a year later they seem to have none. Running a government on the basis of 5 year forecasts on spending and tax is just daft.
And it all fell apart within a month and that was well before Trump upended the entire cart.
“Kill the IDF” and “fuck the British” rappers Bob Vylan have had their visas revoked and can’t tour the USA. They have also been abandoned by agents and management.

It's funny how the free speech zealots in America are cancelling or declining to issue so many visas over hurty words.
Writing as someone who watched precisely none of the Glastonbury coverage, I'd not miss it if it were gone but am puzzled why the BBC did not simply put a short delay on the feed.
What happened to the other lot? Kneecap, was it? Did they go ahead? Were they miffed at being upstaged by these newcomers?

I have no support for the current authoritarian kleptocracy in the USA at all; but as a supporter of free speech (as I can best understand it - see PB debates passim) I don't think there is any relationship between the idea of the right to free speech (excellent) and the idea of the right to free speech without personal consequences (entirely meaningless).
You have a right to free speech; I have a right to act in response to what it is you say. And vice versa.
Tolerance of free speech is not remotely the same as respect for opinions uttered.
Yes, but is it constitutional for the US executive to cancel visas on the basis of political expression which is perfectly legal - and constitutionally protected - in the US ?
I think they will make the case that all visas are issued solely at the discretion of the executive. So, they can do this,
It is however staggeringly hypocritical to do this while threatening European officials over their insufficient commitment to free speech.
Which is really the original point being made.
It's quite strange.
GB News are demanding that they be treated just the same as Lucy Connolly, and charged.
I thought the idea was that LC had been treated unjustly and must be released.
Do rappers at Glasto not get free speech?
I think we've established that Lucy Connolly and Bob Vylan are equal levels of unpleasant. I suppose the argument is "if you're going to get jailed for being unpleasant, let's not restrict it to right-wing unpleasant."
Personally I'd go with jailing neither rather than both. But I'd also prefer it if neither were afforded any particular cultural significance.
Of unpleasant, perhaps, but their actions aren't equivalent.
The opposite equivalent of BV would be a musician at a festival leading a chant of "Israel forever. Death to Hamas."
The opposite equivalent of Connolly would be a BLM activist calling for specific violent action in England against innocent white people whilst such action was getting underway.
Hamas is proscribed. The IDF is not. So it's not quite opposite.
But both organisations have murdered lots of people.
Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history should hang their head in shame!
And they will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth.
At risk of being callous, that would seem a win/win scenario.

It's coincidental, though also essentially a process of convergent evolution. Another piece of evidence that tricolour flags are boring and should all be replaced with more interesting designs.

I would expect a priest to understand the full picture - that if I women is trying to abort a baby at that point there are a lot of things going on and it's better to give her help rather than treat her as a criminal...

Indeed. The reality is that senior members of the IDF are probably involved in crime, although I don't support the kind of language used by Bob Vylan, on any account, and in any context, and would have no problem with them being locked up for it.

Indeed, a significant number of IDF soldiers are Druze, Christian or even Muslim.
The Devil’s Throat. Deep in the Rhodope Mountains in Thrace. This is where Orpheus - a Thracian - went down to save Eurydice from the Underworld, and then turned back to look, casting her into eternal darkness
It is also a deeply strange and sinister cavern where a mighty river plunges deep into the rock and disappears. The cave system has never been properly explored - all caving was stopped 30 years ago when the bodies of two cavers were retrieved. Both had died from heart attack, no one knows why to this day
The river entering the pits of the earth creates a brilliantly noomy mist….
That was my set book for Latin O level - Orpheus and Eurydice.
Very good, but fiction of course.
One of my earliest cultural experiences was being taken as a kid to a production of the Offenbach opera. The can-can was quite the eye opener..
Financial Times: Diluted welfare reform halves savings but still pushes 150,000 into poverty
#TomorrowsPapersToday
I bet it doesn't even end up saving that just like the WFA.
Also, the IFS, have said regardless of the savings, they believe the bill for Welfare is still going up even more than predicted by the government, so in the future regardless of these much smaller savings still need to find more money.

Sadly the prospects of Ireland adopting a better flag are remote.
The royal family’s private “royal train” will be decommissioned as part of King Charles’s drive to modernise the monarchy and reduce costs.
The train has been used to transport members of the royal family around Britain’s railway network since 1840, but it has become increasingly costly to maintain and store. Rolling stock from the 1980s would need to be updated for modern railway networks, and two new more fuel-efficient helicopters offer a suitable alternative.

My mother has committed to paper a story about the Royal Train told to her by her father, who worked on the railways. I shall have to dig it out and find out if she minds me publishing it, to mark the passing of the Royal Train.

There's an alternative very recent history where the BBC pulled the plug on the streaming of Bob Vylan and the front page of the Mail is screaming about free speech being blocked by north london luvies.
The whole Tim Farron thing was strange and so is this. Like, what did you expect?
Ooof. That's harsh. It's not the Lib Dems, it is imo that particular priest taking an inappropriate public stance, even if he is of a different view. That will be manna for the National Secular Society - they will be asking "how many of the other Roman Catholic MPs caved in to bullying by their priests?".
The MP is there to represent his constituents, or his own conscience in matters like this.
And the Roman Catholic church teaches the right to an individual conscience. Roughly (AI but about right):
In Catholic teaching, individuals have a right and duty to follow their conscience, which is seen as a judgment of reason that helps them discern good from evil. This right is not absolute, however, as conscience must be formed and informed by objective moral truths, particularly those revealed through Church teaching and Scripture. While individuals are not to be forced to act against their conscience, they also have a responsibility to seek truth and conform their conscience to it.

Oh come on! If we're going to have a monarchy, do it properly. I was always a bit surprised they didn't make more use of the train after Britannia.
Flying QEII back to London was a minor scandal too. They should have had her on the train from Aberdeen, hauled by a contemporary steam locomotive. Drone shots of them chuffing across the Forth Bridge, a pause off the coast at Berwick for a gun salute from every navy that could make it in time.

I'm not happy. It's weird that it's harder work than in other, hotter countries - but I think that's because we don't grow street trees like elsewhere. Difficult to find some shade to run/cycle in.

I think it mostly that our houses are built to store heat, rather than disperse it.
As it seems we are going to do very little to stop climate change, we might want to do some redesign so that we can adapt better.

Probably would be considered a bit wet and mainstream in our modern Populist parties.
Very sticky tonight. I feel like Roger Moore in his safari shirt in Moonraker.
Where I am it's still hot but not particularly humid. Something to feel slightly happy about I suppose.
I quite like my indoors today. Here it's been 30C outside, and my (not so) little portable heat pump has kept my downstairs at 22-23C using very little electricity. Upstairs is a little warmer !
The cactuses in the conservatory, where the heat goes before it exits through an open window light, are being cooked at more like 35C, however.
I took a short 3 mile walk this evening, which has pushed me over 100 miles on constitutionals for the month. Not up there with the PB Perambulating Postman, but it'll do for me at this stage.

William is very keen on his privacy, for understandable reasons, but that is in conflict with the nature of the public role he has accepted.

We (UK) have already reduced our consumption based emissions by more than half since 1990, so I would say that we will get very close to net zero. The political parties who ar currently shouting about it, will pivot to face the other way again and try and take parts of the credit.
On the resilience I absolutely agree. If you Really Really Want I can direct you to approximately 53,000 forum posts about it.
Since none of it is difficult, I'd take Zig a Zig Aaah instead.

As I see that, it has never been our primary challenge.
In the UK our main challenge has been variability in climate, wind, 57 varieties of rain, and humidity, so our house styles have and building practices have evolved for that.

British weather is always interesting: it's only 200 miles from London to Liverpool but the temperature tomorrow will be 33 in London and just 19 in L'pool.
@DPJHodges This is utterly nuts. Liz Kendall has effectively admitted her changes threaten benefits for people who genuinely need it. That's why she's guaranteed to retain it for existing claimants. But she's also saying she's happy to see others in genuine need lose support from next year.

Edit. High of 20 at midnight. 17 is the predicted high after sunrise.

Edit. High of 20 at midnight. 17 is the predicted high after sunrise.
20 at midnight on the Big Market? There'll be very little clothing left on San and Trace.
@DPJHodges This is utterly nuts. Liz Kendall has effectively admitted her changes threaten benefits for people who genuinely need it. That's why she's guaranteed to retain it for existing claimants. But she's also saying she's happy to see others in genuine need lose support from next year.
This is going to be a very close vote
Are the Tories supporting the government?
No they confirmed voting against.
Advance UK hit 5000 members on its first day. Better than i'd have expected.

Most parties require exclusivity, but not sure how they could enforce it if people are discreet.

Cheap way to suggest a wave of rightwing populism sweeping the country.
Earlier I said that one issue with new PIP rules as discussed in Commons this afternoon is that PIP peeps who are reassessed will be under new rules. Seems I missed Liz K ruling that out.

Why would Reform, Respect, Restore, Jdvance UK etc require exclusivity when they want lots of members so they get media attention? No one's auditing them presumably, so they could splinter a large donation into 1000s of fake members and tell the media they're enormously popular.
"A council chief executive has defied the authority’s new Reform leadership by refusing to take down a Pride flag.
George Finch, the new leader of Warwickshire county council, ordered Monica Fogarty to take down the banner flying outside county hall in line with the party’s manifesto policy to only fly British flags.
But Ms Fogarty, who previously headed the county’s race equality partnership, refused and said: “I am afraid I will not be taking the action that you are requesting.”
Zia Yusuf, the head of Reform’s department of government efficiency, claimed the refusal showed that “a coup d’etat is under way in Britain”. He accused Ms Fogarty of “subversion of democracy” and acting like the “monarch of Warwickshire”."
An evil fecker with a smiling face. He knew exactly what was going on with the slave labourers being worked to death. Should have had the death penalty at Nuremberg.
He wasn't directly responsible for the Final Solution, in the way Himmler and co were. He was Hitler's architect and also wrote some excellent accounts of the Nazi regime on his release from prison

Did reform win 51% of the seats in Warwickshire council because that article contains the line Reform won 22 out of the 57 seats and runs the county as a minority administration.
If Reform wanted to actually do what they requested they should have held a council meeting with a vote - I suspect they didn't do that because they would have lost 35 votes to 22...

The leader of the Reform group stepped down - because it was all rather difficult to do.
His deputy, Cllr George FInch has taken over.
Cllr Finch is 18.
He may have a career as a Jacob Rees-Mogg impersonator, should the planet actually require such a role.
Lying about the action of PA doesn't help your case, they haven't always been non-violent and they haven't just sprayed a bit of paint about.
There is a genuine debate to be had if severe punishment we have finally seen with JSO is enough, but the "mostly peaceful" rioting type whitewashing doesn't do you argument any favours.
VARNEY: Do you think it's gonna be politically ok to pick people up in the workplace, they may have been here for a few years, then you stick them in the Alcatraz in the Everglades? Do you think that's politically popular?

His "excellent accounts" of the Nazi regime were full of falsifications, and missed his involvement in Hitler's concentration camps and Final Solution.

The self-contained booby trap within it as that then scrapping or ignoring it also looks like an ideological position. It was fairly clever politics.
Your question should be:
Is you a Protestant Atheist or a Catholic Atheist?

Financial Times: Diluted welfare reform halves savings

This must have been the production.

Also, the IFS, have said regardless of the savings, they believe the bill for Welfare is still going up even more than predicted by the government, so in the future regardless of these much smaller savings still need to find more money.

An excellent solution to the nations problems!
As it seems we are going to do very little to stop climate change, we might want to do some redesign so that we can adapt better.
Hmmmmmmmmmm
Probably would be considered a bit wet and mainstream in our modern Populist parties.
Humidity can be a problem here but my French colleagues used to complain about heatwaves too.
Which probably gives Harry his best chance of ascending the throne!
On the resilience I absolutely agree. If you Really Really Want I can direct you to approximately 53,000 forum posts about it.
Since none of it is difficult, I'd take Zig a Zig Aaah instead.
In the UK our main challenge has been variability in climate, wind, 57 varieties of rain, and humidity, so our house styles have and building practices have evolved for that.
How many royal-flight-hours per day do we reckon? 1.5, maybe?
That would give us a mean interval between royal helicopter deaths of 250 years.
Edit. High of 20 at midnight. 17 is the predicted high after sunrise.

Evidence emerged after his death. There's a fair but in his Wiki article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Speer
He was mythologising himself. I read his books in my 20s, and it took me quite some time to work the misrepresented history out of my system.
