The Peninsulars in Newfoundland has flipped: it was called for the Conservatives by the networks, but now has the Liberals leading - albeit by a mere 50 votes.
It's a reminder that there can still be quite significant late swings.

Cumberland-Colchester in the Maritimes has also flipped.
Earlier it looked like the Conservatives were +2, now it's looking like it is flat.
The decade when you were thrown out of a band for actually riffing on a guitar, rather than posing with it. And if you weren’t dressed in a plastic boiler suit, you would be laughed out of town.
How to make three minutes thirty nine seconds sound like three hours.
ABC - "The Look Of Love" Bananarama - "Venus" Culture Club - "Karma Chamaeleon" Duran Duran - "The Reflex" Eurythmics - "Sweet Dreams" Frankie Goes to Hollywood - "Relax" Peter Gabriel - "Sledgehammer" Human League - "Don't You Want Me" Imagination - "Just An Illusion" Michael Jackson - "Billie Jean" Kylie Minogue - "I Should Be So Lucky" Level 42 - "Lessons In Love" Madonna - "Into The Groove" New Order - "Blue Monday" Billy Ocean - "When The Going Gets Tough" Pet Shop Boys - "West End Girls" Queen - "Radio Gaga" Rick Astley - "Never Gonna Give You Up" Spandau Ballet - "Gold" Tears for Fears - "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" UB40 - "Red Red Wine" Visage - "Fade To Grey" Wham! - "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" XTC - "Senses Working Overtime" Yazz - "Don't Go" ZZ Top - "Gimme All Your Lovin'"
Yazoo not Yazz for Don't Go. Yazz was the only way is up.
Good choices though.
I’ll concede 2 are okay - Billy Jean and Gimme all your loving. Of the rest, that I have heard, not okay. “everything” released in the 60’s is better than Kylies I should be so lucky.
Another thing I spot that is very wrong, weren’t U2 and the Pogues big in the eighties? Why are they not on the list?
K should be King - Love and Pride. Definitely not Kylie not just because because the song is shit, but also some of the list uses the surname so it's inconsistent. Except Rick Astley which is also rubbish. Could have Run DMC Walk This Way for R

That's a good list. And I'd argue that it is a much better list than one for the 60s or 70s would be (though the 70s might run it close...)
You could play virtually any of those songs and think, for good or ill: "eighties!", which make them perfect for an eighties playlist. The exception being XTC: which is a poor song and poor band. I cannot think of a decent song or band starting with X, so perhaps have that as an 'open' letter where you can choose any other group not on the list?
Also, though I dislike them, I'd argue U2 are much more synonymous with the 80s than UB40 - and had some better tunes.
I'm a fan, so biased, but I wonder whether Kate Bush should replace Banarama with "running up that hill", which has certainly lasted better than any of Banarama's efforts. However: I'd also say that Bananarama are much more of an eighties phenomenon than Bush.
But if you're talking about the eighties, then Kylie *is* very much synonymous with the late eighties. It's a credit to her that, like Madonna, she has evolved to have such a long career.
I think they counted the advance votes first there because of the size of the ballot so still a small chance he could scrape over the line but at the moment I agree it’s not looking good .

I didn't put any money on the bet, because I couldn't believe Pierre P would lose his own seat, but watching him lose will be worth at least $300 in pure pleasure.
Jagmeet Singh, leader of the left-wing New Democratic party (NDP), is also facing the potential loss of his seat in Burnaby Central. Early results have him in third place, trailing on 19% behind the Liberals’ Wade Chang and the Conservatives’ James Yan.

Yep, such lists are very personal. But Sunil's would do for me, aside from the X entry.
As for Talking Heads versus Tears for Fears? Personally, Tears for Fears every time, though I also like Talking Heads.
Also, Talking Heads had some success in the late 1970s, so they're not *strictly* a 1980s band. But it's the same with some other artists on the list as well, and we're talking about songs here. So it may become "everybody wants to tule the world" or "shout!" versus "Road to Nowhere" or "And she was". And that's a tough one.

Carney's victory is razer-thin, and it's almost certain Trump lost it for the Conservatives.

This certainly opens the door to Parties willing to demonstrate their hostility to President Trump. Mebyon Kernow against MAGA, for example, could be a winning slogan.

I am a big Talking Heads fan, but would go for Once in a Lifetime, which broke them in the UK.
INXS could be considered for X, if a bit contrived. Australia's 3rd biggest selling band in history, after the BeeGees and ACDC. Perhaps Need You Tonight (released 1987)

You were absolutely right.
Kate Bush is incomparably better than the dire Bananarama, but to have included her would have given a false impression of quality in the period's music.
In refelcting the decade that taste forgot, Sunil's list was excellent.
Nicer accent, but if anything even more soporific, I agree.
I though he ran quite an effective campaign, and he certainly interviews well. Way ahead of Starmer at the business end of politics. Solid, sober, but not dull. The Cannucks have chosen well.

Get with the narrative.
When your side wins by a percent or two, it's a landslide. When the other lot wins, it's a narrow victory without a real mandate.
See, e.g., the BBC's gushing reporting of Obama's victories against its discussion of the Brexit referendum.

Though Trumps "Landslide" was a similar tiny percent and way over reported as such..
Carney victory is remarkable not for its size but rather for the massive swing from a few months ago.

Pierre Poilievre is the Mikel Arteta of politics, in 2022/23 Arsenal led the league for a record breaking 248 days and still lost the league.
Poilievre was also promising lots of new homes and to build far more affordable homes especially for young Canadians.
So his defeat may boost Canadian NIMBYs and that could also see a knock on boost to UK NIMBYs.
The UK Liberal Democrats are even more NIMBY than their Canadian Liberal cousins and will be hoping for gains in the local elections in England this week to match the Canadian Liberals win

You could probably do a completely different 80s list which does the same thing but differently. Talking Heads, for example.
Yes, Sunil's list is very good - I wasn't dissing it. My different list idea was just to note how 80s were the 80s.
You were absolutely right.
Kate Bush is incomparably better than the dire Bananarama, but to have included her would have given a false impression of quality in the period's music.
In refelcting the decade that taste forgot, Sunil's list was excellent.

I am afraid that's as poor a take as denying Die Hard is a Christmas Movie. Bananarama were brilliant
Yes Bananarama sang lightweight pop songs, but they were quietly, subversively post-punk in their studied "couldn't care less" attitude to stage craft, with uncoordinated choreography, clothes and poor lip-synching. They personify that languid detachment from professionalism that was the Zeitgeist of the early Eighties.
As evidence of their intrinsic coolness, I would cite the hit that brought them to notice, It ain't what you do (it's the way that you do it) with the Fun Boy Three in 1982. Terry Hall was a genius and could spot genius when he saw it.
If just 10 extra seats had flipped Liberal to Conservative, then Poilievre would be PM today and it'd be a Conservative victory the media were talking about.
Carney's victory is razer-thin, and it's almost certain Trump lost it for the Conservatives.
I entirely expect the nuances of this to be lost in the media reporting afterwards.
Compared to the last Canadian election in 2021 Carney has got a swing of just 1.5% to the Liberals and that is mainly due to NDP tactical votes as the Conservative vote is also up. Even if the Liberals are back from their nadir of the last 2 years almost entirely by projecting themselves as the anti Trump party.
Trump however got a 3% swing to him from the Democrats when he won last year compared to his 2020 defeat
For the next 4 years Trump/MAGA and their funders are going to focus on driving the wedge further into Prairie Canada vs Metropolitan Canada. Fun times.

And there is nothing wrong with that. Nothing at all. I agree with you. They’re ace and some of the tracks they covered were classics. Saw them play city hall in the toon with my wife (she was accompanying me, not on stage) absolutely fantastic evening.

She also played an amazingly beautiful bride in another Comic Strip film.
Incidentally, "running up that hill" was somewhat famously used in Stranger Things. I've never seen the series, but the video clip of the song is a brilliant bit of filmmaking. Almost a complete story in itself, even if you know none of the context. Girl with depression, being saved by friends, memories and the power of music. (At least that's the way I've interpreted it...)

If the evidence of the Liberals squeezing the life out of the NDP vote is anything to go by, the Tories above all need a leader who can squeeze the life out of Reform as Carney did the NDP.
The Conservatives in Canada it also should be remembered still are currently up on seats on last time and with a 9% higher voteshare than they got in 2021 too, just the Liberal voteshare is up even more via NDP tactical votes

Indeed, the idea that Canada would represent just one state is an example of how Trump’s conceit, arrogance and all around hamfistedness turns people who might be prepared to listen away.

Alberta and Saskatchewan are culturally closer to Trump's US than Carney's Canada, while New York, New England, Minnesota, Illinois and Washington and Oregon states are culturally closer to Carney's Canada than Trump's US.

You could probably do a completely different 80s list which does the same thing but differently. Talking Heads, for example.
One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter One man's quietly subversive punk band is another man's total shit show.
Yes, the line between genuine incompetence and feigned incompetence is a narrow one, but Bananarama got it right.
Their company flew them to New York to film it, so clearly big budget, but they are still out of time and out of synch, not only with each other, but also with their own song. It has to be deliberate. It's part of their act to be a bit rubbish, as if your sister and her girlfriends were just mucking about.
Carney also avoids becoming the Canadians’ Liz Truss; something no well-respected former financier would want.
If Trump hadn’t Trump’d all over the place, then Carney would have gone down as the valiant night watchman for the Liberals.
Nothing like Truss.
As it is, he came in on an impossible task and won. Makes you wonder about some prominent people in the party who elected not to stand just to be defeated. Not their day, either. LOL.
If 114,886 votes (0.07% of the national total) had flipped from Trump to Harris in Michigan, Wisconsin & Pennsylvania, then Harris would have been President today, and it'd be a Harris victory the media were talking about.
In any constituency system, those sorts of statements are almost always going to be possible, because the speaker gets to place to votes where s/he likes, after the event. They don’t shed much light on the true picture.

Yes, Sunil's list is very good - I wasn't dissing it. My different list idea was just to note how 80s were the 80s.
But we need to have some rules. Sunil allows solo artists by first or last name which makes more options (though I don't think we should allow the same artist twice). I would say artists have to be primarily 80s acts which would probably exclude Queen. But I'm struggling to find any other Q so might have to make an exception. But eg The Police would be allowed despite having their first hits in the late 70s. Songs should be bearable, so I Should Be So Lucky is out, as is Agadoo.
If I was making a list of classic 80s pop songs I'd include Come on Eileen, Don't You Want Me, Small Town Boy.
Suggestions from anyone under 45 should have have a disclaimer that they weren't really there.
Similarly suggestions from anyone over 70 should have a disclaimer.

It's a reminder that there can still be quite significant late swings.

Should be up over £350
So we could still see some changes .
Any ETA on the Conservative leader's seat?
Utter disaster for the NDP who are trounced with even their leader losing his seat
Even though, personally, I think that's unfair.
Check the thread before his
Def 80s vibe.
Don't see how he closes that with just a few left to report.

Just watch the interview he gave to Jordan Peterson, where Pierre and Jordan spent 1h40m giving each other tongue-baths.
As for Poli-Trump - Siri, show me what an epic clusterfuck looks like.
Not only losing an unloseable election with a little help from his friends, but losing his own seat?
Numpty.
So much for our space-rabbit and all her certainty about shy Conservatives. Better stick to horse-racing tips in future!
There’s quite a few incredibly close races still outstanding.
INXS could be considered for X, if a bit contrived. Australia's 3rd biggest selling band in history, after the BeeGees and ACDC. Perhaps Need You Tonight (released 1987)

The tip on Lib minority by @Casino_Royale was a good one too.
When your side wins by a percent or two, it's a landslide. When the other lot wins, it's a narrow victory without a real mandate.
See, e.g., the BBC's gushing reporting of Obama's victories against its discussion of the Brexit referendum.
Carney victory is remarkable not for its size but rather for the massive swing from a few months ago.

Trump however got a 3% swing to him from the Democrats when he won last year compared to his 2020 defeat
One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighterOne man's quietly subversive punk band is another man's total shit show.It should give the Tories hope. All they need is a leader who can fall out with Trump rather than kiss his big orange ass.
If they'd called on Canada to become the 51st through to 60th states then there would be incentive for Alberta and Saskatchewan to break away from Canada.
Instead what's the incentive for them to be under both Ottowa's control and WDC's control ?
The Conservatives can attack Trump, but they have to want to attack Trump.

The Conservatives in Canada it also should be remembered still are currently up on seats on last time and with a 9% higher voteshare than they got in 2021 too, just the Liberal voteshare is up even more via NDP tactical votes
