Papa don’t preach –  Looking at the contenders to be next Pope – politicalbetting.com

With the death of Pope Francis at 88 after a 12-year pontificate, this header will look at the candidates to succeed him. In Italian, the candidates are known as Papabili (literally Pope-ables).

I'm very excited by the possibility of Peter Erd? I can't remember a proper noun with a question mark attached since the excellent Northern Irish punk/metal/indie crossover band Therapy? Offers all sorts of comic possibilities, plus the enjoyable aspect that you sound quite arch when discussing him.

As both a Catholic and a man I am throwing my hat in the ring buoyed by the news that Liz Hurley is dating Billy Ray Cyrus proving that anything is possible these days.

Will let you know the papal name I choose on here before it’s announced so you guys can get a nice bit of insider action.

Also load up on me resigning before completing a year after a scandal involving some nuns and St Peter’s throne.

Slightly depressed I’m not even on the long list

I get that some cardinals are more prominent and eminent, also they are cardinals, which probably helps. Nonetheless it feels like a pretty deliberate snub. Leon off of PB? Not even a mention. Despite all my good work, eg setting up my Bangkok personal outreach youth charity Save The Really Hot Ones

    Oh

    @govjayinslee.bsky.social‬

Washington just took the reasonable step of not allowing the National Guard of other states to operate here without our agreement. It’s not the Guard personnel we are concerned about, it’s other governors in the Trump cult.

Excellent thread and similar thoughts to a running series that I've prepared for friends and family.

I agree about Turkson. I think he was a bit too young and bumptious during the last Conclave where he was seen as committing the cardinal sin (pun intended) of actively seeking the Papacy. Francis is also a good example of how a strong candidate from a previous Conclave can make a strong showing the second time. He's also somewhat moderated his more conservative social views in recent years which will help.

I can't see any of the candidates who openly opposed Francis winning through. The College of Cardinals is just too dominated by his appointees to elect someone who would be soon as a complete rebuke to his pontificate.

My money is on Zuppi coming through late in the day. He's pretty liberal but extremely likeable and has made some nods to traditionalists over things like the Latin Mass. He's also just about the right age.

I saw them twice. Rarely have I seen a crowd so enthusiastically surfed. The second time, I was the third person to do so - some time before the band came on. 100-odd peole cheerfully chanting "you fat bastard!" at me. Doc Martens flailing everywhere. I had a slight scar for weeks after. Happy days.

Must admit that Peter Turkson is my instincit. Can't really explain why other than something about him looks popey. Then again Ratzinger certainly didn't look popey so this heuristic isn't infallible.

It's a no bet for me on a rational basis but I might do a tenner or something for a laugh.

Would prefer it to be on exchange though so I can just lay the favourites.

Therapy? at Donnington was the last time I got in a mosh pit and truly went for it. Such a buzz. That sense of a huge wild crowd and you’re right in the middle. Yes you could end up trampled to death but up until that moment the adrenaline is fantastic

    The Times main story tonight

Keir Starmer no longer believes trans women are women

Sir Keir Starmer no longer believes trans women are women, his spokesman has confirmed after the Supreme Court’s ruling on biological sex.

Starmer told The Times in 2022: “A woman is a female adult, and in addition to that trans women are women, and that is not just my view — that is actually the law.”

However, making his first comments on the Supreme Court judgment, the prime minister welcomed the “clarity” it brought. When asked if Starmer thought a trans woman was a woman, the prime minister’s official spokesman said: “No.”

Brings to mind possible headlines from the past had Sir Keir been PM

1833: Keir Starmer no longer believes Slavery is ok

1967: Keir Starmer no longer believes homosexuality is dirty

The difference being that the law was changed by parliament in 1833 and 1967.

Whereas the law that Starmer referred to in 2022 is still (supposedly) on the statute book.

Yes, just for the name. And I'd hope he didn't ruin it by taking a different Papal one.

    Pope Pineapple?
If I were to become Pope I would choose the papal name ‘Innocent’ which fits me perfectly.

Pope Innocent was a good papal name, we need to bring it back.
Innocent was the stage name of a Kerala comedy actor of some repute:

    And a decent Zimbo cricketer

Meanwhile, I think the JD Vance debate has been conclusively solved.

I don't think JD Vance killed the Pope, I think meeting JD Vance probably drained the Pope's will to live. It's subtly different.

NASA has figured out when the world is due to end.

Just under a billion years away so won’t trouble us. I won’t be here in 30 years time. So not fussed.

    🚗 Tesla Q1 2025 earnings preview

Results land 22 April. Revenue is forecast at $21.8bn vs $27.2bn in Q4, with EPS at $0.43 (vs $0.74 in Q4).
Deliveries dropped 13% year-on-year, the weakest in three years.
Production issues and softer EV demand continue to weigh on performance.

Well, we will see after US market close. But Tesla results are likely to be ugly

Does he have a recognition certificate for his change of mind?
The fact that Starmer said in 2022 "trans women are women, and that is not just my view — that is actually the law.” must surely be used as a stick to beat him with now. He wasn't just going along with the law at the time, he said it was his view; now he disagree with his 2022 self. Why?

Of course there has not been an Italian Pope this century so I think that tradition has died.

As most cardinals are now non European an African Pope like Turkson or an Asia Pope like Tagle are good bets following Latin American Francis.

Tagle is relatively progressive but still conservative on issues like euthanasia and abortion

Saw this round the Wight this afternoon. I take it "up to" 24 x F35s on deck mean that it'll actually usually be carrying about 3 serviceable British ones:

It is certainly not impossible we will have a black or Asian Pope and a female Archbishop of Canterbury by the end of the year.

There's already been a black pope:

It's a limit, rather than a prediction. It will definitely "end" as a life-giving planet by then, but magnetic field problems, axial tilt, asteroid impacts, other extra-stellar supernovas, plate tectonics etc. could all shit the bed well before that.

We probably have 50-100 million years to find and settle on another planet, assuming we survive that long.

You might want to read "Get In". Starmer either has changed his mind (there are precedents for this) or has no opinion. Either way he will say that which is most likely to gain/keep power. As David Herdson points out, this Labour government is ideologically untethered.

To be fair he has contradicted himself on almost every issue since becoming an MP, and it has worked so far. I thought centrists were big on integrity and didn't like liars though

Because what he said in 2022 would now require legislation to overrule the Supreme Court judgment, and he doesn't want to do that because he's afraid it would be unpopular.

The charitable view of all the commitments he made on taxation before the last election was that he thought they were necessary to ensure the election of a Labour government. But now it looks more as though he simply lacks the courage to say anything that may be unpopular. And that this is the reason the government was hamstrung on taxation before it even took office.
