I don't believe the journalist contrived to insert himself into the group. If he did, he'd be in ADX Florence for the next 99 years on espionage charges. Which is still a possibility for him anyway.

    Stupider coincidences have happened.

Supposedly this one happened because of similarity of names/initials.

Small piece from the trenches: My mother has decided to enliven her retirement by joining the local parish council. At the last council meeting for their village 12 new planning applications had been lodged, of various sizes. Two adjacent villages have apparently seen similar levels of new applications.

Perhaps the government is really going to get the house building boom it so ardently hopes for after all? I look forward to outcry from the shires as every village discovers that they too are expected to play their part.

    Where are you ?

The BBC did a piece on all this a while back, seemingly the most recalcitrant councils were geographically located fairly heftily in the southeast.
This is in the north. But the number of applications is a step change upwards - a mix of new & older ones that had previously been refused trying their luck under the new regime I think.

Planning consultant groups do seem to think there’s some real change in the air: https://www.pwaplanning.co.uk/news-and-insights/opinion/nppf-changes-does-the-new-grey-belt-designation-make-your-site-viable-again/

But momentum is with the liberals, and they're ahead in latest polls. Possibly underpriced?

But it would be so me to find a way to lose money on Trump when he's not even on the ballot...

I think the key point is that the Liberals vote efficiency is much better than the Conservatives.

In 2021, the Liberals trailed the Conservatives with 33% against 34%, and won 160 seats vs 119.

In 2019, the Liberals again trailed the Conservatives by a percent, and had a similar lead.

The problem the Conservatives have is that their vote share is inefficient: too much is wasted on big majorities is Alberta and Saskatchewan, while the Liberals win in Ontario and Quebec with small leads.

    I doubt they could anyway.
There's a huge amount of US case law which says journalists can publish classified information if there's a public interest defence. Which clearly there is here.

Had he published it while the operation was ongoing that would be a different matter.

History condemned to repeat itself. This sounds very much like the Westminster bubble’s conviction that Barnard Castle and then Partygate were Westminster bubble stories.

So far much of what Trump’s lot have done has been nasty, or just obnoxious. What this and the various DOGE cockups do is show them as incompetent too.

If you fill an administration essentially full of Dominic Cummingses (or is the plural “Dominics Cummings”?) with American accents you’re going to get yourself in trouble eventually.

It's a dilemma. Do you leave the group thus drawing attention to the error and signalling that you are aware of it, or keep quiet and never mention it?
In my case, I told the group I shouldn't have been on the list as soon as I saw it, and I reported myself to my firm's Head of Compliance. Fortunately, we didn't own either of the stocks in question, so at our end the impact was pretty minimal.

I suspect, however, that someone at the investment bank (amusingly it was my former employer) got a serious talking to.

    Normal politics have been suspended.

Any problem like this Signal issue and the Trump team all sing from the same hymn sheet - lie, spread baseless conspiracy theories, slander and abuse opponents and then double down and lie some more. Anyone expecting them to engage with the actual facts of the matter are deluding themselves. They don't need to because, sadly, the MAGAs are too f""ing stupid to understand what's going on so it will continue ad infinitum. I think Europe and Canada can write off the US.

    Elise Stefanik update.

Well, the Republicans are due to advance Ms Stefanik to a Senate vote next week, where I am sure she will be confirmed as UN Ambassador, and which will result in a Special Election in New York's 21st Congressional District.

This is going to be a real test of the the current administration's popularity - it's a district which typically votes about 60:40 Republican. It's also a significantly older district than the national average, with a lot of retirees. And with a median household income of $60k, it's poorer too.

    Could the Dems win it?

Yes: turnout is likely to be well down on November's election, and there a number of college towns which are very blue.

Should the Republicans manage a fuck up with Social Security, and checks end up going out late or not at all, then I think a lot of older Republican voters could stay home.

If that were to happen, then Congress could get very interesting indeed.

"Decline is evident everywhere when you travel around the country. All you see are broken roads, rubbish, ruined street furniture and uncared for buildings and towns. It is depressing and more and more people now openly discuss it though at some level they will have seen it for years. A creeping sense of despair permeates the country as nothing ever changes.

People are struggling day by day more and more. Everything is getting more expensive from tax to food to even passports and yet nothing seems to improve. More money is poured into the NHS and other public services and yet they remain a mess. The cash apparently is wasted, badly spent or perhaps the structures are so broken nothing can change the direction of travel.

I feel it deeply - it hurts me daily as I leave my front door and walk or run around my beloved country. I see the filth on the broken roads, the trash in the gutters, the unkept grass verges, broken and bent barriers, beaten down buildings and communities."

(Whispered to my political allies: I write about DC politics for a living, so I love the Goldberg/Signal story as much as any of you. But I hope you realize that no one who isn't a news junky gives two shits about any of it. This is the most inside-the-beltway story ever.)
I think this is true: this is a story that appeals to political junkies, and in particular people who lean Democrat already.

But what it does tell you, however, is that Trump's cabinet picks aren't very bright or organized.
The important impact is on the military and intelligence community. I suspect they will now be more anti-Trump in private/behind the scenes that they were.

Seeing as their lives could be on the line in the field and Gabbard and Co. could be txting the world and his dog the co-ordinates.

How would you react as a forces pilot?

On topic. No. Mark Kelly is a poor speaker. He lacks charisma. He would be a losing candidate.

My advice, don’t punt yet. The Dem candidate is likely someone no one is mentioning right now.

Yes, as I said yesterday I don’t buy it either

    Top level psyop.
Are they trying to fool us into believing that the administration is staffed by imbeciles ?

Gabbard: My answer yesterday was based on my recollection or the lack thereof, on the details that were posted there I was not. And the what was shared today reflects the fact that I was not directly involved with that part of the signal chat..

    Gone from the schedule:
    – Nuuk visit
    – Sisimiut stop
    – Even the dogsled championship

Only thing left? A quiet visit to Pituffik Space Base on Friday.

No photo ops. No crowds. No explanation.

There is an obvious explanation why there's no photo op with the crowds in Nuuk welcoming him...

Yep: Mike Waltz doesn't like Tulsi Gabbard, and wants her to be embarrassed and unprepared in the Senate.

Never attribute to malice cunning, that which might be otherwise explained by incompetence.

Someone credibly threatened to kill him I expect. We will probably see a lot more of this both inside and outside the US. Mysterious cancellations etc. In the end they'll all be trapped in Mar-a-lago playing endless rounds of bad golf and paying DJT for the privilege... surrounded by baying mobs beyond the gates

    Growth forecast halved to 1%

    Well done Rachel.

I didn't hear any growth forecasts for future years? Is Rachel hiding the bad news?
Ah... growth forecasts UPGRADED from next year for some reason?

Even Rachel is laughing at that 😂
    Completely bonkers.
It’s the only way the numbers add up without yet more tax increases. It’s frankly dishonest.
Are you suggesting that the OBR has been tampered with?
I think this is where the growth is supposed to come from.

the Office for Budget Responsibility estimates that the Government’s reforms to the National Planning Policy Framework will produce an extra 170,000 homes, raising GDP by 0.5%..
    https://x.com/yimbyalliance/status/1904890130986344922

    Is that realistic ?
    I don't know.

But it's the OBR's job not to get forecasts exactly right, but to say whether or not the government's fiscal assumptions are at least realistic.

France ran this morning a all-hands on deck nuclear attack exercise, nicknamed "Poker 2025".

Literally simulating low-altitude penetration and tactical nuclear strikes, with a dozen tankers deployed to refuel the three fighters squadrons airborne.

Multiple European air forces were part of the exercise, notably the Polish Air Force.

The good news is that it was conducted over France.

Question. Musk is raising the price of premium plus on X from £30 a month to £47 from next month

Premium plus gets you unlimited access to all X capabilities

That is an enormous increase with no obvious reason why. No pre-announced upgrade. So what’s going on?

    Theory:

    1. Musk is desperate for cash
    2. X is about to make some incredible new grok
available, or X will be offering the worlds first convincing virtual sex etc

I am not putting in an entry, but in parallel with the 'Peak Boris' moment - which I think PB believes with justification was Hartlepool, is it worth listening and watching to see if there is a 'Peak Trump' moment - after which all gets a lttle tougher for the gangster oligarchy?

Cheery thought for the day. Entries on a postcard.

This kind of thing happens all the time: when I was a fund manager, my email I was once added to an email discussion about a pending corporate transaction that I definitely shouldn't have been privy too.

Presumably my name was similar to someone they did want on the email.
There is a Philip Goldberg who has served as assistant secretary of state for intelligence and research. I'm not sure if he is still around.
