After the big news about Boris and GE2015 we now have further details about Nigel Farage’s intentions. It looks as though he is going for South Thanet – a seat that had been strongly tipped and where he has stood before. A selection meeting has been fixed for August 26th though it does look like a formality for the party leader.

I only looked up the Labour candidate today after reading comments about him being a kid etc. in the past. Yeah, he looks a bit baby-faced but he doesnt come across as the dud candidate that some people here were suggesting.0

The BBC version of reality isn't true and as the actual problems get worse every year the minority who know it isn't true also increases every year hence why Ukip was always guaranteed to keep edging forward despite whatever ICM or anyone else said.GIN1138 said:Well yeah, that's why I think it's unlikely UKIP will gain a single seat in 2015.
If they can't do it in by elections, I just don't see it in a general election.
That doesn't necessarily mean Ukip will end up winning lots of seats though as the political class will probably use lawfare to stop it.

Looking at the Newark by-election, and last night's local elections, it seems Labour and Lib Dems both get squeezed in Con vs UKIP battles. But, it's not clear which party benefits.0

I agree , to me he seems a decent keen young man . Farage will be standing against the former UKIP leader (in 1997), Craig Macinlay, who is the Conservative candidate.
Farage got 5% when he stood in the constituency previously in 2005.

Mr. Owls, I stopped watching O'Briain's science programme after a piece by Brigstocke about nothingness included two crowbarred in and unamusing 'jokes' about Clegg and Osborne in the first 5 minutes. O'Briain I rather like.
I think people (not necessarily just on the left) underestimate how their comedy or attempts thereat on things like Have I Got News For You reinforces and encourages more people to move to UKIP.
It's not a tiny little fringe anymore.0 -
I am not sure vindictive is quite the word, totally self-centred, bereft of a conscience but very aware of their own dignity. They can be susceptible to band language (see Jerome), which The Bute actually isn't, and can seek revenge if they feel their dignity has been slighted, which The Brute definitely does. Mr Dancer. Strange isn't it. All the funniest comedians seem to be Lefties. I recently got a comedian removed from the Warner leisure venues entertainment future schedule after i complained his material was racist.

Incidentally, if I get the time I'm hoping to get a mid-season review done over the weekend. Probably mostly racing with only a little about betting (instead of two reviews, one betting, one racing).0

Ken Dodd, Jim Davidson, Jimmy Tarbuck, Bob Monkhouse are/were Tories and I expect a good few others such as Bruce Forsyth, the two Ronnies etc, etc are/were too. First draft's done, but it'll need a lot of mangling, especially at the start (weirdly, a lot of change can be easier than less, because I'll probably just axe some bits and write whole new sections rather than having to amend what's currently there, which is harder and takes longer).

Chaucer was a class traitor
Shakespeare hated the mob
Donne sold out a bit later

It's a three-way contest and, like Mike, I like Labour. There is also an under-reported demographic phenomenon in the constituency related to HS1. The opening of the line has meant the seat has attracted an influx of new residents from London, who have now chosen to make the constituency their home. These voters are young, professional types and whilst not exclusively Labour they are Labour-leaning. Campaigns have reported knocking on doors awaiting an elderly couple and being confronted with something entirely different. In fact it gets better for Labour because a number of the new residents were very active in Labour politics in London.MarkHopkins said:On Topic: I'm not sure Farage expects to win this seat. Some estimates have put this influx in the thousands but it is difficult to judge because this is post-2011 for the most part. Although there has been something of an uptick in younger age groups from 2001 to 2011, which is possibly catching the early stages of this phenomenon.

Just my take on the names that stood out as potential or probable Conservatives.

Thanks Morris - I rather like the so-called "double chance" football markets as it means, rather like tennis, there are only two outcomes and one doesn't get beaten up by those pesky draws. The alternative is simply to lay the unfancied side ..... Blackburn in tonight's case. The end result is much the same, but of course one can only lay on the exchanges, or by using "the machines" as Shadsy chooses to call them.Morris_Dancer said:Mr. Putney, congrats.

Mr. Charles, I obviously don't know the details of the case but from personal experience I'd say American cats are, like American ladies, and I say this with full respect to your wife, not quite what we are used to.Charles said:

I am not sure vindictive is quite the word, totally self-centred, bereft of a conscience but very aware of their own dignity. Mr. Llama, cats sound quite vindictive.
She mentioned, in passing, that if you die alone in a locked flat, a dog will lie by your side, starving, and pinning you for days. A cat won't even make it past *ahem* dinner time.

RobD Al Murray is no Tory, though his act is a Kipper. Steve Cram is Labour, Max Hastings voted for Blair in '97 and '01. Eddie Izzard, another signatory, campaigned for Brown and the Euro. Doreen Lawrence is left-leaning. Of Yes celebrities, Sir Sean Connery I am sure voted for Thatcher!0

Care to enlarge on that, Mr llama? :-)HurstLlama said:

I suspect it is a lot closer to 1 person being asked 2.8 million times, rather than 2.8 million people being asked once ;-)Sunil_Prasannan said:

Register with YouGov and you will. I get polled most days, though a lot is non-political. I have been propping up the LD vote for about a year. It does make me suspicious of online polling!Sunil_Prasannan said:

I concur with HYUFD that laying Farage will likely be a nice little earner!0 -

Personally I think if Farage stands in South Thanet then he is a fool. The Tories have played a blinder by picking a former UKIP leader and committed BOO supporter as their candidate. Farage should look elsewhere.

Not on a public forum, old chap, no. Suffice to say that the initial evidence to support my thesis was gathered on my first trip to the USA. Subsequent trips merely added to the evidence file. I suppose I should declare that I have never been to the USA purely for a holiday and I never made it to the West Coast, so I do accept that Californian cats and ladies might be different again (or indeed those from other West Coast states).Tim_B said:

Michael Caine also supports Scottish independence despite being a Tory, but maybe because he wants the English to govern themselves http://www.scotsman.com/news/interview-michael-caine-1-4786280

Nigel Pearson has a better record than MON, who is still revered at Leicester, but most of MONs time was in the Premier League.peter_from_putney said:

Good spot. I think worth a couple of quid. I thought Leicester on +44 was value too. We have a tough start with Everton (H), Chelsea (A) Arsenal (H) and Man U (H) all before mid September. So those odds may get better.MikeSmithson said:
I've backed Burnley at 12 on Betfair's Premiership Handicap market where they start +52. Next one down is at 44. With that size handicap they could get relegated and still "win".peter_from_putney said:O/T
With the new 2014 - 2015 Football League season starting tonight, I've backed the promotion favourites Cardiff City to win or draw at Blackburn at 4/5 with Betfair.
DYOR.
Still, this is what we got promoted for, and it is the best Leicester side and best manager since the MON years.
As regards the handicap markets, most bookies tend to take these down as soon as the season starts, so now's probably the time to put your money down!
Mind you, I start every season optimistic, the triumph of hope over experience.
Southampton to go down is one of my bets, they have sold the team and got a new manager.0 -
So apparently there is a Survation IndyRef poll due, noise is that it is good for the No camp. Here are the previous figures from 1st Aug:
Yes - 40%, No - 46%, Undecided - 14%0 -

Fox I think Farage has a good chance in his home county and with no incumbent. It would be good for democracy to have a few UKIP and Green MPs0
