If Labour's lead is shrinking (and it may be), it currently seems to be more about the Conservative vote share increasing than the Labour vote share shrinking. That may of course turn out to be a virtuous circle if Tory-leaning UKIP supporters decide that the purple meanies would be a wasted vote. But it doesn't suggest that the Labour vote is particularly falling away following its autumn advance.0

Labour turned into a single issue party, and it shows. He has one answer for every single issue, and while that one answer has done well in recent times and left the government flailing for a retort, it isn't enough. It's too late for Ed to change his fortunes, the electorate seem to have made up their minds about him, so have Labour supporters in fact.
Labour's poll lead looks incredibly soft and if the government ratchets up their own populism in the run up to the election Labour may not win, and it is their's to lose with all of the electoral advantages they have.

Some interesting things I picked out.
Dave could tilt the working/non-working balance further in his favour by giving the working poor a huge gift by increasing the minimum wage in the budget.
I don't think Ed's "cost of living" stuff has really hit home with the working population as much as people think either, or his rating would be much better. I guess because he has no solution and his "living wage" bonus was a complete joke.0 -

Also, there were rumours earlier of Sony/PlayStation becoming the title sponsor of McLaren F1. I have not heard of anything like this internally and after asking around a bit, no one who would know about it has heard of it either. It either means they are hiding something (which I doubt) or that there is no chance of Sony/PlayStation becoming McLaren's title sponsor. Honestly it's not our MO, we usually sponsor events and sports outright rather than individual teams. I remember when we were in talks with a big London based football team in 2009 for principal kit sponsorship, they wanted a similar amount of money to what we give UEFA for Champions League sponsorship and that gets our branding at every single match so we said no.0 -
Mr. Max, there's a suspicion that Button wanted Perez to stay because he (Button) could handle him relatively easily. Magnussen may be a bigger challenge. There's also a suspicion that if Alonso can be tempted in 2015 that Button will be the one to go. Not only is he an older driver, Alonso would then have undoubted number one status.
Unless of course Ron Dennis has engineered his way to retake control. But then, Ross Brawn's quite capable of running a number one driver system.
Edited extra bit: obviously you have an inside line, but this is the first time I'd heard of a Sony sponsorship for McLaren. If it were so, you'd be better off waiting until, frankly, they have a better shot at the title.0 -

I don't think Button really handled Perez all that well, a new driver coming into a settled team with a crap car and they didn't really have a big points differential. If Magnussen is better than Perez then Button is in big trouble.
The early word is that McLaren expect to be strong out of the gate with the 2014 regs, Mercedes and RBR as well, Ferrari are struggling, which could line up with the rumours about Alonso deciding not to stay there and looking to McLaren who may have a strong claim to the title if they get to grips with Honda power quickly in 2015.
It's been clear to anyone who follows F1 that Whitmarsh is not capable of running a team that wins the title. In 2011 he should have dumped Button, got a weaker driver in as a defined number two and pushed Hamilton to the 2012 title by directing resources to him like RBR to for Seb and Ferrari for Alonso. Anyone who still thinks that Hamilton moved for the money is having a laugh. The politics at McLaren meant he was fighting for the championship with one hand tied behind his back in comparison to Fernando and Seb.
As for our sponsorship, the closest I have heard is that we may sponsor "F1" and there have been talks in the past of some level of sponsorship of it, but it never moved beyond talks so who knows. Possibly because Bernie was asking for too much money, I know we gave up the game rights because Bernie wanted £100m for for a 7 year renewal (up from £50m), and our management told him to eff off. Which worked out well because Codemasters have found it tough to make a decent F1 game because their budget has been severely limited by the licence payments.0 -

Mr. Max, 2012 is the one that got away for McLaren. Overall, they had the fastest car but the title came down to Vettel and Alonso.
F1's finances are currently unsustainable. Over half the grid are under significant financial pressure. Instead of dicking about with a trophy for pole positions or double points for a country which has the same motorsport heritage as Qatar does for football they'd be better off sorting that out.
There's a fear that half the grid will get culled and the remaining 6 (or so) teams will get secondary teams or we'll have customer cars. Which would be rubbish.
Not heard that about McLaren in 2014, but Mercedes I know have been confident for a while. I think they may have (after Ferrari) the best driver lineup. Red Bull should be good, but Ricciardo may struggle alongside Vettel.0 -

MD, I believe this is what made Hamilton switch to Mercedes. He knew the 2012 WDC had his name on it and McLaren management pissed it away by playing nice with Button and not focussing resources on the stronger driver. It is a subversion of how competition works. The market chooses the winner (in this case driving talent) and money/resources should follow. By artificially levelling the playing field to spare Whitmarsh's blushes McLaren drove out their child prodigy. All very disappointing for a McLaren fan.
Indeed. The finances are questionable for almost every team right now. The 2014 regs were supposed to limit costs but I've been reading they have done the opposite. The FIA need to step up and tighten regulations further so in-season development budgets are significantly limited. The problem is that there is currently no appeal for the non-aero innovation driven by F1 outside of racing, so traditional manufacturers have no inclination to join. I wouldn't be surprised if Mercedes decide to sell up. They are also missing a big Japanese team. Given that Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Suzuki are all huge players in the global auto industry, Japan is severely under-represented in terms of teams and drivers. Until the FIA make the regulations work for ordinary car manufacturers the number of companies and individuals willing to plunge £100-120m per year to end up as a mid-table team will continue to dwindle. Like you said the gimmicks also aren't going to help. The double points idea is just stupid.
My old professor has been consulting for them, he says they are very confident in their 2014 package but admit they don't have the driver line up to challenge for the WDC.0 -

Indeed. The finances are questionable for almost every team right now. The 2014 regs were supposed to limit costs but I've been reading they have done the opposite. The FIA need to step up and tighten regulations further so in-season development budgets are significantly limited. The problem is that there is currently no appeal for the non-aero innovation driven by F1 outside of racing, so traditional manufacturers have no inclination to join. I wouldn't be surprised if Mercedes decide to sell up. They are also missing a big Japanese team. Given that Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Suzuki are all huge players in the global auto industry, Japan is severely under-represented in terms of teams and drivers. Until the FIA make the regulations work for ordinary car manufacturers the number of companies and individuals willing to plunge £100-120m per year to end up as a mid-table team will continue to dwindle. Like you said the gimmicks also aren't going to help. The double points idea is just stupid.
My old professor has been consulting for them, he says they are very confident in their 2014 package but admit they don't have the driver line up to challenge for the WDC.

The power units have been expensive to develop. The FIA wants a cost-cap, which is good, but enforcing one is nigh on impossible because Ferrari and McLaren have road car operations and there'll always be some overlap (and you can't limit their road car activities).
I also wouldn't be surprised if Mercedes left in the next few years, but for another reason. They've gone down the committee route of leadership, and as Han Solo almost taught us, you can't run a racing team by committee.
That said, the Silver Arrows could be the ones to watch in 2014. We'll find out soon enough.0 -

Mr Dickson is quite right to be surprised by the position taken by the Daily Record on Mr Carmichael, as it is the biggest newspaper by far in Scotland, and doing not too badly. This is in a market whose newspapers have generally gone down the U-bend of circulation decline even more quickly than in the UK more generally. Never mind what one personally thinks on indy, it's pretty fair to say that the newspapers are all fixed in their position, and to be frank getting boring with the combination of unvarying stance and deteriorating quality of reporting as the funding declines, a few columnists excepted. So it is really surprising to find a piece like that.0

McLaren F1 is a different company to McLaren Automotive, same parent, but they have completely separate operations. Not sure about Ferrari. The crossover is not that large and the FIA can just force the teams to get on board.

While I totally agree that we shouldn't be jumping on this sort of tweet my opinion changes when it is politicians of whatever stripe that are doing it for one simple reason
The only way we can show them the stupidity of some of the legislation they pass is to repeatedly hit them over the head with it until it begins to permeate their skulls that possibly they should think a little more carefully about the laws they pass.
I have no doubt in my mind they would be fully agreed on all sides of the house if this was a simple citizen feeling the weight of a police investigation that this would only be right and proper.
In short if MP's wish to pontificate and pass laws they had better be squeaky clean themselves on that subject or they should fully expect every little transgression to be highlighted. Anything other than that and they are basically saying that they shouldn't be judged by the standards which they wish to set for the rest of us

I haven't seen it yet but this year I saw two of the best performances by actresses that i've seen so Meryl would have to be on pretty good form.
The first was Cate Blanchett in 'Blue Jasmine' and the second Adele Exarchopoulos in 'Blue is the Warmest Colour'.
PS. If you get the chance have a look at "The Book thief" which was directed by a good friend of mine. I'd be interested what you think
