Yesterday I heard directly the story the story that has been doing the rounds that the Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, had already got the backing of 38 fellow CON MPs ready to send letters to the chairman of the 1922 committee calling for confidence vote on TMay’s leadership. If this is correct he needs just a few more if he is to pull the trigger to try to bring GE17 failure down.

Hmm. Sceptical myself. The optimal time for Boris to resign was immediately after Theresa's Florence speech. I suspect he was strongly considering it but thought better of it. His best approach now is to let Theresa burn out over the next few years, then step in.0

Although there is pretty much zero enthusiasm for Theresa May remaining as leader for the next election, I don't sense much appetite for a contest now. Since there is no clear consensus for any one successor, there would have to be a full contest, which would be an enormous complication at a critical juncture in the Brexit talks. Still, if Boris does pull the 1922 trigger, then things would take on a momentum of their own. Because many MPs don't want a contest to happen now, Theresa May might survive the ensuing confidence motion, but she would need a convincing majority to do so. It's anyone's guess whether she'd get that.0

Someone here linked to an article he wrote about Churchill fairly recently. In it, Boris opined Churchill had taken a gamble opposing Nazism and it had paid off (propelling him to be PM).
Leaving aside the "I'm like Churchill" subtext, that does rather miss the point that Churchill did what he thought was right. It wasn't to improve his own career prospects.

Labour's economic policies might frighten plenty on here but Labour's betrayal of leaves EU vote and immigration will frighten plenty more.

The only sensible choice for the country appears to my mind to be Phil Hammond. A steady pair of hands to guide us through a tricky Brexit... his chancellor should be a leaver though, and the only name I can think for the job is Gove.

It isn't worth the upheaval of change, which I think will be the calculation which many MPs would make at the moment. It would be much better to take our time and have a proper contest, with some fresher faces, in 2016 or 2017. But, if Boris does move, MPs' hands will be forced.PeterC said:
