I wonder if Don Brind has any thoughts as to public sector productivity between 1997 and 2010 ?
Here is the official ONS data:
https://www.ons.gov.uk/economy/economicoutputandproductivity/publicservicesproductivity/datasets/growthratesofoutputandproductivityfortotalpublicservicesexcludingqualityadjustmentforhealthcareandeducationtable3
It shows that public sector productivity declined by 1.3% between 1997 and 2010 but if you removed the 'quality adjustment' aka exam grade inflation then public sector productivity fell by a shocking 8.3% during the Labour government.
Assessing productivity in service industries is problematic enough, before we consider the further issue of how to measure this in services free at the point of use.
One of the difficulties in increasing productivity now in the UK is that for much of the economy an increase in productivity isn't necessarily what the consumers want.
For a non public sector example I would like the supermarkets to decrease their productivity by increasing the number of checkout tills in operation.0 -

From what I can tell, no one knows the origin of "nitty gritty", which apparently first appeared in the 20th century.Jet said:I agree: credit to Theresa May for suspending the whip. She did the right thing, and she did it promptly, even if she had little choice but to.
What a pea-brain Ann Marie Morris must be. Seriously!
She can't even apologise properly. "The comment was totally unintentional. I apologise unreservedly for any offence caused." No, dear. This isn't like saying "nitty-gritty" without knowing the term's origin, which many decent people do...
There seems to be no hard evidence at all for its having been a racist term.
I agree with your sentiment, however.

An apology should be for what you did, e.g. "I'm sorry I did X". And don't use a form of words that suggests that offence may or may not have "been caused", but that if it was caused (because why should you know whether it was or not, since those of us who say we're disgusted might be putting it on, right?) then you're sorry. Agreed. There's something rather petty and half-hearted about the "for any offence caused" phrase. There's a subtext along the lines of "...if you have been so overly sensitive as to take offence". I hope the CIA guide will explicitly proscribe the term.Cyclefree said:

I think Morris needs to be expelled really. its a horrendous thing to say, i cant understand how you can say it by accident (and the video makes it clear she wasnt instantly horrified, so i dont buy she didnt mean to say it) and her 'apology' was horrendous.
She needs to be expelled and deselected. If it means a byelection, so be it. She can run as an indpendent if she wants.
The fact Cash and Redwood seem Aok with what she said, seems to show that certain parts of the Tory party arent bothered with that sort of racist language.0 -

It really is time to get rid of the Outrage Bus.
This isn't a resigning matter. It was an outdated turn of phrase that really was not that offensive in the context it was used.
The Language and Thought police are getting too much of a grip on public life and it has to stop.
It is very easy to make noise about this sort of slip of the tongue to divert attention from the real issues going on within the other parties. Both Labour and the LibDems have issues with antisemitism in their ranks - issues that they have been slow to deal with in any meaningful way. So they can use this to point at the Nasty Tories - when, in reality, every party has people who say things they shouldn't.
Diane Abbott has been far more racist in her choice of language than Morris was today. But the Outrage Bus doesn't stop in Hackney apparently.
Should Morris have chosen a different turn of phrase? Absolutely. Should she resign as a result? Absolutely not.
(This has all been made more interesting as one of my housemates is her former step-daughter...)0 -

"Quite probably. Also, we shouldn't expect German car manufacturers to come riding to the rescue. While they might make a few noises about the need for free trade with the UK, German companies are well-known for their ability to take a long-term view. For them, the survival of the EU as a whole is ultimately of greater importance than the loss of some trade with the UK."

Lucky for the Liberals the Aussies use AV.
Abbott is in favour of the free trade freedom of movement Canzuk proposal between the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. More than 80 per cent of Kiwis polled and more than 70 per cent of Aussies and Canucks want freedom of movement with the UK.
Never going to happen - but it would be nice to go back to the pre 1973 days when any Brit could just up sticks and move down under!

I live in Australia. He is absolutely hopeless and will 100% lose the next election, if he lasts that long.
He is the classic example of all that is wrong in modern politics. He doesn't believe in anything, other than the fact that he is smarter than everyone else. He spent his whole life trying to become PM, knifing an elected Liberal leader to get in, and then had no real idea what he wanted to do when he got there - sound familiar? The main reason he became leader is, you guessed it, he looked good on TV.
He promised a 'open conversation with the voters' - then realised that all reform is potentially unpopular so ditched absolutely everything and tried to succour favour with Labor voters by copying their policies. He has just committed billions to school funding (a Labor policy) and received zero credit from the voters.
The lesson, which needs to be heard loud and clear by the Tory party, is that if you espouse Labour policies, people will not support you, they simply become more inclined to vote for the real thing.rcs1000 said:

Turnbull would do well, as would May, to reflect on the lessons offered by Germany and France's leaders.
Though I think Macron is far from 'case proven'...

Good morning.
Macron is getting a lot of flack on Twitter (again) for comments he made about Africa. First I saw was a video clip, though it turns out that was edited.
This is the full quote:

Personally, I don't see what's so awful about what he's just said there. On my timeline last night, I saw my Corbynista friends calling Macron a racist for this....yet they were silent when it came to anti-Semitism in Labour party *rolleyes*.

When words sound the same (homonyms), they tend to be distinguished by the context in which they are used.Sunil_Prasannan said:

Is this the first time you've encountered the idea of homonyms? Do you think "rein", "reign" and "rain" are the same word? Or are you struggling with answering question 2 on the quiz? You're allowed to use wikipedia to find out the answers by the way, (consider https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigger_in_the_woodpile and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigga_in_the_woodpile as starting points)Sunil_Prasannan said:

Okay, let's do a quick quiz.Sunil_Prasannan said:
You missed this bit:Stereotomy said:
Is Ann Marie Morris African-American or are you just quoting random text now?Sunil_Prasannan said:
Some Africider "nigga" non-offensive except when directed from a non-African-American towards an African-American. Yet others have derided this as hypocritical and harmful, enabling white racists to use the word and confusing the issue over nigger.[3]Stereotomy said:
"This article is about the colloquial slang. For the racial slur, see Nigger."Sunil_Prasannan said:
"Nigga (/ˈnɪɡə/) is a colloquial term used in African American Vernacular English that began as an eye dialect form of the word nigger"
Almost as if they're different words.
"Others consider "nigga" non-offensive except when directed from a non-African-American towards an African-American. Yet others have derided this as hypocritical and harmful"
1. Is the word "nigga" predominantly used by:
a) Young African-Americans
b) Conservative MPs
You forgot this bit too:
"Non-rhotic English-speakers, such as speakers of many British dialects and African American Vernacular English, pronounce "nigger" and "nigga" identically and do not distinguish between the two words."
Let's try dis again, shall we?
"Non-rhotic English-speakers, such as speakers of many British dialects and African American Vernacular English, pronounce "nigger" and "nigga" identically and do not distinguish between the two words."
What dey iz tryin' to say iz:
a) Most British people do not distinguish between the two words.
b) African Americans do not distinguish between the two words.
Which category are you?
The ability to do this between said two words in the phrase chosen is unambiguous. As has been repeatedly pointed out to you in this thread.
Why are you having difficulty accepting this?0 -
The SMH is a Labor rag through and through. They spend their whole time trying to get the Liberals to behave like Labor, and when they do they tell everyone to vote Labor.
You are so lucky you live in the Uk for politics (not lifestyle). It is utterly dire here. The 'centre left' Labor party are way to the left of Corbyn and the 'centre-right' Liberals are pretty much LibDems. The Unions overtly control the Labor party. A Labor party staffed 'commission' set wages and conditions for huge chunks of the economy with employers getting no say at all. The Liberals accept this because it is 'popular'. Every election consists of both party leaders promising to spend as much (borrowed) money as possible, and it has to always be financed by taxes on the 'wealthy'.
The result - an economy entirely built on mining and foreign money pumping up asset prices, a massive housing price bubble, terrible productivity and virtually no exports other than raw materials. Almost every industry sector is a duopoly, constantly exploring consumers as there is no way for new entrants to break in. Turnbull's great business success was building an ISP that got bought up by one of the major players and shut down immediately.
If it was not for resources and agriculture, Australia would be a third world country.CarlottaVance said:

For me, the main problem with what this MP said is not even that she used the "n-word". It's that she was treating a horrible and shameful period of history as something to make light of.
To me it's the equivalent of that horrible expression that kids use "sweating like a Jew in a shower" -- that expression might not explicitly use an anti-semitic slur, but the offensive part is that it's making light of something disgusting.0
