And even the good news keeps getting better
This morning's second estimate of Q2 2013 GDP growth revised the first estimate up from 0.6% to 0.7%. This was always on the cards given the current acceleration in growth. Q1 GDP was left unchanged at 0.3%.
The components of Q2 growth which drove the revision were Manufacturing (revised up from 0.4% to 0.7%) and Construction (up from 0.9% to 1.4%). Services growth remain unchanged at 0.6%.
And specially for another richard, Bloomberg pointed out that:
Exports rose 3.6 percent, the most since the fourth quarter of 2011, and imports increased 2.5 percent. Net trade has added to GDP for two straight quarters, the first time that’s happened since the first quarter of 2011.
Consumer spending rose 0.4 percent, government expenditure increased 0.9 percent and gross fixed capital formation jumped 1.7 percent. Consumer spending was boosted by a 2.4 percent increase in employee compensation. That was partly driven by financial-services firms deferring bonuses until April, when the government cut the top rate of income tax.
So not a consumption led increase nor a "boom" pumped up by house price inflation. What we are seeing is a true slow march of the makers.
The ONS also announced separately that business investment rose 0.9% in the second quarter, a welcome turnaround even if investments levels remain 3.5% down on Q2 2012.
The revised figures mean that the UK's Q2 growth rate was 2.9% annualised compared to the same rate calculation in the US of 1.7%.

Strange shenanigans on Allhallows Parish Council , Rochester , where a by election for a vacancy received 10 nominations .
9 out of the 10 nominations were ruled invalid , 5 because consent to nomination had not been given and 4 because the proposers and/or seconders had nominated more than 1 candidate . It looks like most of those nominated against their will had in turn nominated someone else against their wish . The one valid nomination is probably an accident as her proposer and seconder also nominated her husband but her nomination was accepted first .0 -

I haven't used either. As for Southend, it's only just started operations (well, last year). Once upon a time it was London's third busiest, until they started expanding Stansted. Direct trains from London Liverpool Street and Stratford make it not too shabby for us in east London. Only served by Easyjet and Aer Lingus and the moment though!SeanT said:

I have been in Venezia in the last few days. Pigeons looks unhealthier than usual...must be challenging economic times even for them.
People from Sri Lanka are taking over Venezia's street stalls.
The turnout at the mass is the usual 5 people per church. So I guess Osborne is needed to cut some usuless old church.
What have I missed? Yougov up and down but basically the same? Any flying eggs? Which Labour MP criticized Ed? I see good Thursday for Labour in local by-elections.

The British Bankers Association (BBA) released their monthy report on bank lending this morning. This post concentrates on Mortgage lending only.
The number of mortgage loans approved were up from 67,189 in June to 67,647 in July, a monthly increase of 0.4%.
Average values for house purchase loans approved fell from £160,100 in June to £158,400 in July, a monthly decrease of -1.1%.
Total new mortgage lending was £9.1 bn in July, up £0.1 bn from June. New lending was matched by capital repayments of £9.1 bn in both months, leading to a reduction in net lending of -£0.1 bn.
Capital repayments were 1.17% of total mortgage loans outstanding of £779.9 bn. BBA Members account for around two thirds of total mortgage lending in the UK.
Although these figures suggest static market activity, the growth trend is shown when comparisons are made to prior 6 month averages. Mortgage approvals at 67,647 were 10.1% above the Jan to Jun 2013 average of 61,413. House purchse loan values were up 2.85% on the average of £154,000. Gross Mortgage borrowing averaged £8.2 bn (£9.1 bn); capital repayments averaged £8.5 bn (£9.1 bn); and net repayments averaged -£0.3 bn (-£0.1 bn).
The mix of mortgage lending has also changed. The share of 'equity release and other secured lending' has continued to fall over the past two years, whereas that of house purchase loans and remortages have grown. The BBA report the strongest levels of growth in share of lending from first time buyers and housing chains. The following table shows the change in shares of total mortgage loans approved over the past two years.Purchases Remortages Other Total
It is quite clear from the BBA figures that growth in the UK housing and mortgage lending markets is far from being a dangerous bubble. Households are continuing to pay down mortgage debt. Loan values are not increasing at uncontrollable rates and indeed fell in July. Secured lending for purposes other than house purchase are falling in number and share.

There are two different chopper versions we normally called Super Pumas. The EC225s were grounded last October after the 4th crash/ditching in 3 years. The problem with them was the main drive shaft on the oil pump for the gear box. It was a two part shaft with a weld and the weld kept failing. Basically if your oil pump goes then your gear box goes and you very quickly fall out of the sky. They said they would replace it with a single piece shaft but that seems to have been problematic because they need so many hours testing on the new component. So instead they have said they are reintroducing the 225s with the mitigation of more inspections. Given that the failure is generally said to be a catastrophic failure no one is happy with this and a lot of guys are refusing to fly them.JosiasJessop said:

The Superpuma L2 is the version which crashed tonight. No idea what caused it yet but as always strong suspicion has to be on the gearbox as it is the one weak link in all choppers. You can get a chopper down with almost anything else going wrong due to built in redundancy but the gearbox is generally pretty catastrophic.
Worryingly it sounds like it hit hard as they are talking about wreckage being washed up near Sumburgh.0 -

A new Nielsen has it 53-47, Newspoll has the LNP holding on to their Queensland marginals and Rudd could lose his seat in Griffith where Newspoll has the LNP candidate with a narrow lead. Rudd does at least look to have stopped the Gillard meltdown (the Coalition were ahead 57-43 when she was ousted) and it may be better for the ALP if, having helped them avert meltdown, he does lose his seat as, with Gillard also having given up her parliamentary seat, it would allow for the ALP to start afresh in opposition0

The root cause of the failures in the 225s have been the shaft on the oil pump rather than the gear box itself. But this then leads to a gear box failure. This is an issue with all the choppers we fly today. As far as I know the last chopper we flew that had gearbox redundancy was the S61s but they went out of service a decade ago. All the choppers we fly today - both Superpumas varieties and the S92s which I fly in at the moment - have no gearbox redundancy and all have had fatal crashes due to gearbox failures.JosiasJessop said:

Interestingly if Abbott does win, it will mean Australia has the most rightwing government in the western world, even Cameron, Key and Merkel generally accept climate change and gay marriage which Abbott does not and Harper in Canada also accepts gay marriage. Indeed, an Abbott win will certainly increase the confidence of the Tory right, many will be asking if a rightwinger like Abbott can win when Cameron cannot maybe lessons need to be learned. David Davis will also be pleased, he holds similar views to Abbott and is sceptical about climate change and voted against gay marriage, he also has a similar hardman personality0

Starbucks is not our economy nor is it a model for it. We don't export Starbucks. We don't sell them to anyone other than ourselves. We don't go to China for a cup of coffee (or even tea). We need jobs that create wealth and exports. That can compete. And Cameron is absolutely right. It is a race we must win if we want our children to live to the same standards as we have.
Take a look at this article which tries to explain why it is and will be difficult for us to compete with Asian nations. One anecdote says that any Korean buying a foreign car is subjected to an aggressive audit by the tax authorities!
