  • Long time since I read the book GOD. Anyone interested in the game should do so.
  • It will be interesting to see on what basis Mr Justice Sweeney sentences PC Wallis next month. As we observed in MacShane, if the basis of the defence plea is disputed by the Crown or the Judge, a Newton hearing must be ordered, and the facts determined. If not, the Judge is obliged to accept the basis of the plea. Suppose PC Wallis' plea of guilty was on the basis that he submitted a false account of what was a fundamentally true incident, will the Crown be able, or even want to dispute such an account? As a result, it is vastly premature to say that today's plea vindicates Mitchell completely. The importance of Mitchell MP v NGN must once again be noted.

I'd never heard of him or even known of this mans existence, but Vilfredo Pareto seems to have been a pretty smart cookie with his theories of Elitism in politics and how "democracy" wouldn't change the hierarchical structure of society:

@BBCNormanS: The Lords is justified, indeed obliged to fulfil its duty in properly scrutinising EU ref bill says Danny Alexander. ie ok to kill the bill
  • London is a massive rich lefty playground. Even hosting QT in London is unfair to Tories.
  • 5 minutes to the results of my (anticipated) masterly backstab in Diplo. Well set up over two game years and likely to be devastating. The thing is, I am feeling genuinely remorseful. The anon victim seems a properly nice bloke and has trusted me. Has also referred to some real world issues.

Am I cut out for this game? Is it deep down immoral to lie to and stitch a stranger? It is making me uneasy.

Also has anyone in PB land tried online Conditerri (sp), the diplomacy Machiavelli varient? Is it any good? Any tips?

    Never played it.

I recall Nick taking me apart in a previous game and he sounded so wounded to have killed me so heinously. Lovely fella. Why he's a champ.

The header misses out UKIP in the Borough Green result:

    Ind 692 (38.9; +6.1)
    Con 588 (33.0; -22.5)
    UKIP 349 (19.6; +19.6)
    Lab 84 (4.7; -7.0)
    Green 68 (3.8; +3.8)
    Majority 104
    Turnout 32.5%
    Independent gain from Con.
Percentage change is since May 2011.

PS - FWIW - and I'm trying to be helpful and not critical - I think the results would be easier to read (for me anyway) and simpler for you to publish, if they were simply in black with no bold.

    O'Flynn on AQ for UKIP:

'Jonathan Dimbleby presents political debate and discussion from Heythrop College in London with Justice Secretary Chris Grayling MP, Shadow Justice Secretary Sadiq Khan MP, Patrick O'Flynn the new Communications Director for UKIP and former coalition minister the Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather.'

No. The constable stands convicted on his own plea of a serious offence against the law of England and will be punished in due course. My point is that the limited nature of this prosecution ensures that the plea does not, of itself, vindicate Mitchell's account. If it did, why does so much importance still attach to the defamation proceedings?

This gem of perfect English by Peggy Noonan (Wall Street Journal) talking about Govenor Christi's dillema:

"His uphill fight for the GOP presidential nomination in 2016 just got uphiller. Those Republicans who didn't quite like him for other reasons have something new to hang their antipathy on."

    Uphiller. I love it!

Actually, I thought Christie came out of it quite well. Turbulent priest stuff, a bit like Henry II. He sacked the guilty parties immediately. Be interesting to see how the court case comes out.

I used to do a lecture on him - along with Mosca and Michels. They were very much of their time but had some very interesting things to say about the nature of politics. Pareto was of course also very influential in economics - Paretian Optimality. Unfortunately he was eventually accused of being a cheerleader for Fascism.

Given Henry II is still closely associated with turbulent priest (what he's best known for, even if he had many other achievements), that wasn't exactly a PR success.

I do wonder about the Telegraph., DT writer asks if things can get any worse for Francois Hollande.

FFS he's a middle aged fat bloke - he heads the world's fourth biggest economy with several millions at his disposal and is now allegedly enjoying the company of a hottish 40 yr old actress as well as a hottish 48 yr old.

Tell you what I'll take on his problems.
