    Herman Cain 1945 - 2020

Death of Black businessman, Tea Party activist and 2012 Republican presidential candidate just announced, attributed on his website to coronavirus, which Cain may (IIHO probably) contracted at President Trump's June rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

It’s a little distasteful that you try to make a political point out of someone’s death, especially when you have no way of knowing when it how he contracted the virus

The US is heading towards a massive democratic crisis that could destroy the republic.

@Bournville (are you from Birmingham by any chance?) do you think this new “press secretary” the government is hiring will help or hinder the situation?

I honestly can't see how things can get any worse from a media/political perspective, so having a press secretary can't hinder too much.

The ideal approach would be wholesale media reform; journalists are as important to the maintenance of political health as doctors as to the maintenance of physical health, so just as we introduced proper qualifications for doctors and legislation to hold them accountable for malpractice, we should introduce proper qualifications for journalists and legislation to hold them to account for malpractice. I have a deep admiration for journalists and the vital work they do, which is why I'm so depressed to see the profession so badly reduced in this country.
That is a pretty bizarre idea not compatible with freedom of speech or democracy. China is currently imposing something along those lines in Hong Kong.

It’s possible that young children are more infectious than previously thought - though this study is purely about viral loads, not infectiousness.

Afraid he made the point, by making a point of scoffing at the pandemic. He did it his way. Am sad for his family and close friends.

IF I could think of anything good to say about him as a politico, I would. I cannot. Except perhaps to note that he was a Trump precursor, only nobody - except maybe Bannon and/or Trumpsky - realized it.

As a person, Cain clearly had some serious flaws - who does not - which I won't try to defend. However, he clearly seems to have been a MUCH nicer human being than The Donald - granted, a pretty low bar. Think this could be the main reason (along with lack of years of TV exposure) that HC failed while DT succeed in winning the Republican nomination and then the White House.

Back in the day I did enjoy way toooo many Godfather Pizzas.

This map masks (there's a word!) different trends in different regions within states. For example, in WA State Covid hot spots are focused in agricultural Yakima Valley of east central WA, And in CA, worst areas are in Central Valley, also agricultural.

That said, map DOES show that Covid 2nd wave or whatever you call it is NOT limited just to Red States (despite map colors) in electoral sense.

Sure, and in the four currently worst effected states (CA, AZ, TX, FL), there’s some sign of new case numbers falling off a bit. But the overall picture is grim.

Agricultural workers do seem to be the next set of essential workers getting hit.

Perhaps there are some similarities USA & UK re current Covid hotpots

    > urban areas with above-average concentrations of lower education & income, and higher % of minorities & immigrants.

    > rural areas with high concentrations of agricultural workers (production or processing) who tend to be immigrants and are (as you say) essential workers.

    > rural areas that do NOT have big ag or immigrant concentrations BUT which are somewhat isolated, or at least at distance from major urban hubs, which were largely spared during the first months of the pandemic, but are now coming into its grip.

US Senate Armed Services Committee cancelled scheduled hearing Thursday on nomination by Pres. Trump of retired army brig. gen. Anthony Tata as US Defense Dept policy director, to replace former policy chief canned for alleged disloyalty to Our Fearless Leader.

Nomination has been derailed by statements made by Tata, a Fox News analyst, including calling Pres. Obama a "terrorist leader" as well as by reports concerning the end of his army career.

Which according to US Army investigators & press reports allegedly involved adultery (a criminal offense under US Military Code of Justice) as well as allegedly disclaiming approx. $3k in medical bills for his daughter, and an allegedly forged court document presented in Tata's defense against claims by his ex-wife.

Decision to postpone hearing (without rescheduling before August congressional recess was (allegedly) bipartisan.
