The big news from Westminster this afternoon is that the Home Secretary has announced a review on the legalisation of cannabis for medical use – something that has become a big issue because of the Billy Caldwell case.

It's an interesting chain of events. Attitudes towards Tobacco and Alcohol are hardening on public health grounds, yet at the same time attitudes towards drugs currently illegal are softening.

Are attitudes towards alcohol hardening with the public ?

Surely the contribution to respiratory disease depends on the means of ingestion?

You should see what hydrogenated vegetable oil does to the human body.
Cannabis should be legal, regulated and taxed. I'd be in favour of legalising it but banning smoking it in public places including parks (similar to Colorado). If people want to toke in their back gardens - fill yer Birkenstocks.
Every (expletive deleted) non Native American is from an immigrant community! And I'm in contact with the descendants of a great uncle who clearly, although we're still working on the details, left England 'under a cloud'!

I think it certainly is with young people, aren't they drinking less?
Plus what has Northern Ireland brought to the mainland apart from bigotry, terrorism, bombs, death, and the regeneration of Manchester?
Seamus Heaney.
Struggling a bit beyond that, though. Van Morrison is decidedly not a plus point.
AP McCoy. Alex Higgins, George Best and Mary Peters for older readers.
Three out of four there. Alex Higgins only ever won one ranking tournament in his career - a greatly overrated player.
Higgins was world champion twice, wasn’t he?
Yes, but the first one (1972) was before world rankings were introduced in 1975. Even so, apart from his world championship win in 1982, he never won another ranking tournament in his career.
I don’t think many people would be against the use of cannabis-based medecines, properly tested and regulated, to relieve pain, help cure diseases etc.
That is not the same as saying that the sort of skunk which can cause serious problems should be legally freely available to all and sundry.

True Los Angeles story. We have a friend with a beautiful bassett hound, which sadly has liver cancer. Dog is undergoing chemotherapy, and was wasting away as won't eat. Dog is fed cannabis, and now has decent appetite, and is improving.

You mean not all dogs would respond as well to the same treatment?
On topic, Javid senses it might not be long till his moment comes, and to a large extent what he does now might even create it: creating a credible alternative to May hastens her downfall.
I don’t think he cares a jot what May thinks of that, but, he does need to be careful not to overplay his hand.
"Tax records show that alcohol sales have continued to grow in Colorado despite the rapid rise of recreational marijuana. Even as tax revenues from marijuana nearly tripled between June 2014 through May 2015, alcohol sales continued to steadily increase as well, with alcohol excise taxes rising 2.1%, the same increase as the year prior."

He was a total disaster, but was capable of things no-one else has ever managed. He played Jimmy White in the semi-final in 1982 and that was quite possibly the greatest snooker game ever. His 69 break to tie the game at 15-15 was unbelievable:

How is 'sales' measured? Value or quantity? Are people buying higher priced booze, as opposed too White Lightening and the like.

Some of that may be just natural population growth, I understand that a lot of Californians are heading that way. Some of it may be a growth in people going on a 'recreational' holiday indulging in boos and pot.
I suspect at the alcohol per person in changing very small, but I don't know.

Sales = $ taxable value. Not au fait with how the US tax different alcohol strengths.

Possibly but the big fear was that pot sales would seriously depress alcohol sales. It just hasn't happened.

He did win the 1983 UK Championship , beating Steve Davis in the final.
Do those who do the out-group signalling and insults know how they come across to those who aren't in their in-group? Or even to some (many?) of those who are in their in-group?
Whenever I see the words: "traitor", "xenophobe", "Remoaner", "liar", or similar (from either side), I assume the comment is content-free and it's just a toddler-tantrum and skip to the next one.
If the intent is to persuade others or change opinions, it truly is an utter failure. If it's just to pleasure oneself and/or signal what a reliable chap(ess) someone is to others on "their side", I suppose it's effective, but it doesn't half swamp the meaningful signal with pointless noise.

Yes, some would have seen falling alcohol sales a benefit, others a risk, in reality not a lot changes that much. Just things get slightly better,
Slightly more freedom for people to enjoy themselves. Slightly less people going to prison/thought the courts. slightly more tax raised. slightly better relations between the police and some parts of the community. slightly more legitimated jobs. slightly more people able to get treatment for medical conditions slight incentive to people to more to the area.
This will not change the would, but it will be slightly better as a result.

Less cash flowing to criminals. It's a win win all round.

Yes I missed that one, but again its not going to be that big, The latest numbers I have seen suggests that Pot makes up just 20% of US drug imports form Mexico and just 5% of the profit, but any drop in good so again a slight improvement.

Why was this a non ranking snooker event ?
It is true that there weren't as many ranking events until the mid-1980s (the UK championship became one in 1984), though why that didn't attract ranking points in the early 1980s when tournaments that were played over shorter distances did, I don't know.

Even Native Americans are descendants of immigrants (the Mongols and Tartars are the ones who didn't head East).

Although that's a decline in per capita real consumption, when you remember that Colorado's population is growing at 1.5% per year, and inflation is north of 2%.

The quality of debate on here would be greatly improved if word such as these could be blocked, just as MPs are not allowed to accuse each other of lying.

Mr. Gate, I'm too pure and virtuous to comment on means of drug use beyond what I've read in biopsychological textbooks.

I saw them score 444 two years ago.
They’d have got more as the Pakistanis pulled it back in the last few overs.

For the record I wouldn’t support it. It is something that would lead to all sorts of unintended consequences.

But I do think that Javid at No 10 and Gove at 11, (or the other way round) could be good for the country.
