Thanks to Liverpool getting through to the Champion’s league final and the ongoing series of strikes on SNCF – the French railway system we have a problem this weekend running PB.
I've been out and haven't seen what's gone on, but if that's a permanent 'gone', then please don't go. Take a break if you need it (and I think mot of us need a break from PB every so often), but please come back. You'd be missed.
Stick around. I am not a Corbynist, but would vote Labour if in a Constituency where they could depose the Tories. Roughly 40% of the population support Labour, so for @Cyclefree to suggest that 40% of the population support anti-semitism or misogyny shows that she has lost her usual acumen. All political parties have their darksides, but that should not prevent us from supporting other bits of their platform.

True, all political parties do have their darksides. But with Labour, John Mcdonnell *is* the darkside! He is the madman.
OGH - good luck with your train travel! Having booked a ticket for a strike day in June I was delighted to see my train is still on sale - though two alternatives are "not available" SNCF have said bookable trains will be running - so fingers crossed- booked in advance first class train travel in Europe is remarkably affordable!
If Corbyn gets in he will be the UK Hollande, I expect the Tories would soon build up a big poll lead and unless the centre left finds a Macron, maybe Umunna?, to replace him the Tories would comfortably win the next general election
Possibly. Initially I think he'd do quite well, as people found he wasn't the madman that the Mail and Sun had built him up to be. By mid-term the difficulties of meeting expectations without upsetting the applecart would be challenging.
But all these things are part of democratic change, as Beverley suggests. People try one thing, then another. Parties respond in one way, then adjust. A situation where an exhausted party hangs on indefinitely on the basis of "but the others might be worse" is fundamentally unhealthy, not only for democracy but also for the parties in question. The Tories really need a period to think what they're about. Labour really needs to try some socialist government and either find it works or find it doesn't. Britain needs both to come up with credible long-term alternatives.
The issues of expectations is going to hit hard very quickly. His position is never about priorities. It's alway about where a labour government is going to spend more, in some cases substantially more, but theres never a downside or an acknowledgement that politics is managing priorities. The nebulous "we'll make the international tax cheating corporations pay" would never survive serious scrutiny and most certainly wouldnt materialise in the Treasury.
Yes, you could gain a bit extra from lopping a few pence on income tax and extending ni further up the income scale. But if you have a programme that involves increasing expenditure right across the public services you are going to need a lot more than that.

But 52% of people support xenophobia because of a poster?
I see the types that were first to chuck around accusations of misogyny and bullying when it came to the likes of Plato seem to have put on a different hat today.

I am on a cruise ship in Mykonos and have another 8 days before arriving back in Barcelona. Just reading the threads from time to time and see little has changed but everyone should be relaxed and not feel intimidated about contributing
Travelling through Europe does raise thoughts on Brexit for me but right now it is great to be enjoying lovely weather, food, relaxation and BBC World News showing how irrelevant they are
Will provide my thoughts and instincts in due course
Just to add my voice to those imploring @Beverley_C to stay.
This place is already over-infested by (male) PB Tories. As I said, Labour is now utterly mainstream if you are under 50. If you can’t deal with that, or seek to understand why people might be attracted by Corbyn, you are simply masturbating.

Everyone is free to stay or go as they wish. I'm trying to think why you'd use the term 'infested' with regard to a group of human beings. Ah I've got it - wasn't there someone on QT last week wearing a t-shirt which likened Tories to rats. Language is so important is it not?

Glad to hear you’re having a good time Big G and hope the rest of your trip also goes well.
Like Sunil, I wish the best of luck to TSE and OGH (re the train)!
You can count me as another advocate for Beverley's immediate reinstatement. Garden makes a good point about the demographic here – it is not a safe space for male conservatives, although sometimes it does indeed read that way.

Sorry to see Bev go but you must have thick skin on here some days and not give up,we all have had had those days .
The first shall be last and the last shall be first.
Please reconsider Beverley. The vast majority of us value your posts, and if some posters can't cope with your reasons for switching to Labour, they are the ones with a problem.

You picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue.
Problem is lots of trolls joined the site post or in the run up to the EU ref and just spout nonsense to the point where the discourse is similar to that on twitter. I do miss the days from a few years ago where everyone was engaged but happy not to aggressively get their point across. Corbyn has obviously missed his best chance to govern but I wonder if his most passionate supporters will still be here in a year or two when Labour find a better leader.

Mr. Johnno, not sure but it's worth pointing out many members have been here for a decade or more. Changing one's mind over that period of time isn't unusual.

Come back Beverley. Missed what happened, but would appeal, generally, for more tolerance and understanding for opposing viewpoints. People get heated, and robust debate is of course good. But it should not spill over to the point where people with differing views don't feel welcome to post here. Do not misquote me. I said this:-
"I do not wish to endorse the current government. But unlike you I do not wish to endorse an alternative which I consider to be even worse. Corbyn and his coterie are beyond the pale for me. To use Mr Meeks’s approach: those who cannot abide the xenophobic lies which led to Brexit and decide to vote Labour to punish the Tories will be, whether they like it or not, endorsing the anti-Jewish racism of Corbyn’s Labour party. I am not going to play any part in substituting one form of xenophobia with another."
The key phrase is "whether they like it or not".
You may not like my analysis just as many on here do not like it when Mr Meeks points out the same thing with regard to the Leave vote. But when you vote Labour that vote will be taken by the Labour leadership as support for them. And the Labour leadership, Barnet and a few other areas nothwithstanding, are calculating that relatively few voters care about the anti-semitism issue and so they don't need to do anything about it. Your attitude shows that they are right in that cynical - if immoral - calculation. If we do end up getting a government with an anti-Jewish bias then it will be those who vote for that government who will be responsible - and for everything that will entail - even if they would like to persuade themselves that they did not support that bit.
As for misogyny, yes I do take seriously threats of violence against women and women in public life. If others don't and if the Shadow Chancellor doesn't then I am bloody well going to call him out on it and others who turn a blind eye to such stuff.
Still, it's useful to know that people are against racism and sexism up until the point when they vote for a party some of whose members are both openly racist and sexist and then these terrible sins become something that you can ignore.

But it's not as leavery as it was - leavers are beginning to fall by the wayside as their promises of a simple, cost-free, "have our cake and eat it" Brexit have, shall we say, become rather problematic recently.

She was not kicked out. She chose to go. Because of some rather offensive comments about what the Irish did during WW2 which seemed OTT and unnecessary. I hope she comes back. But it's her call.

tim was very unfairly labelled a misogynist because he quite rightly called out Plato for what she really is. I am sure tim would have been equally critical of Plato, if he was a man.
You can count me as another advocate for Beverley's immediate reinstatement. Garden makes a good point about the demographic here – it is not a safe space for male conservatives, although sometimes it does indeed read that way.
BBB – Bring Back Beverley
It wasn't good for a female Tory on here like plato.
Plato was certifiable. No wonder she’s also been banned from Twitter.
The number of true loons on here is I think almost zero. Finchley Road is still a thing, but that was funny rather than obsessive compulsive which Plato was.
Come on Mr Walker, obsessive and compulsive are two words I can use for a number of pro EU fanatics on here ;-)
If Theresa betrays my vote,I'm joining the loons ;-) some on here might say I already have ;-)
Come back Beverley. Missed what happened, but would appeal, generally, for more tolerance and understanding for opposing viewpoints. People get heated, and robust debate is of course good. But it should not spill over to the point where people with differing views don't feel welcome to post here. Ps, that applies to Plato, too, who I was sorry to see go, despite never agreeing with her.

I today exchanged on a property, so in three weeks' time I shall (for the second time in my life) be an Essex boy. I have a feeling that means that train timetable analogies will be becoming altogether more real.
Congratulations. North Essex is stunningly beautiful. Dedham Vale is one of the best places in the world to bob about on a boat clutching a cold glass of a sunny Saturday.
I wonder what the percentage of posters on here are leave and remain,it seems in recent times the site has been taken over by the pro EU lobby.
Sorry to see Bev go but you must have thick skin on here some days and not give up,we all have had had those days .
From this thread and the previous I make it vote in the referendum as follows:

Certainly it’s not “cool” to Leave anymore, ie the sheer insanity of it is becoming obvious.
The only arguments left are: - but, immigration - it was the will of the people so we must do it - we’re different coz common law, feet & inches etc - it’ll be alright in 100 years (Charles)
You’re misrepresenting me
I just have faith in the British people to make a go of it

Good luck in your new home. How long's your commute going to be, or will you be slacking it by working from home?

Congratulations! Have you sold your place on Islington / Hackney borders? Or did you keep it like the lucky blighters here:
Re the Remain/Leave list, Southam is also a Remainer and Cyclefree also voted to Leave (although IIRC she’s not been too happy with the way the government have been handling Brexit!) tyson is another Remainer as well.
I remember Plato back when she wasn’t all Trumpy. She was normal Tory, and easy to talk to - she was the reason why I started to watch ITVbe back then as well (she recommended a show to me). And then she became a massive Trump supporter, and it all went down hill from there. I didn’t know she was banned from Twitter.

It's just over an hour, door to door. I suspect I'll be working from home a fair bit (the new place has a very practical office). However, I'm keeping my flat in London for the moment, just in case the commute doesn't suit me.
Just to add my voice to those imploring @Beverley_C to stay.

I liked your Remain / Leave list Pulpstar (I like lists!) Any chance of updating it based on this thread to add in the few peripheral posters() you originally overlooked? Please?

I suspect we'll get the same sort of figures if Corbyn gets in. Nevertheless he'll have been voted in, and it'll be spilt milk and crying at that point.

Everyone else I'm not sure about, the remain % is definitely higher than for the general population.
Hope I have everyone correct as to their referendum vote !
So, Richard Tyndall and I aren't even worthy of mention. (Sobs quietly.)
Sean T was also Leave.
I think that right of centre Remainers are far more heavily represented here than in the general population, left of centre Remainers are much less heavily represented,

Yes, you could gain a bit extra from lopping a few pence on income tax and extending ni further up the income scale. But if you have a programme that involves increasing expenditure right across the public services you are going to need a lot more than that.
Mrs C, I do hope you come back.
FPT, I find this government inept, politically correct, and addicted to petty regulation, but otherwise, it does no harm to me or mine.
With Corbyn in power, I'd get all of the above in spades, plus big tax increases, plus lunacy on defence and security.
So, I find it an easy choice to decide which party to support.
Travelling through Europe does raise thoughts on Brexit for me but right now it is great to be enjoying lovely weather, food, relaxation and BBC World News showing how irrelevant they are
Will provide my thoughts and instincts in due course
Be kind to one another

Like Sunil, I wish the best of luck to TSE and OGH (re the train)!
Things get a bit tetchy from time to time. It won’t last - I think you’re making a mistake supporting Corbyn but it’s your right to do so

Please reconsider Beverley. The vast majority of us value your posts, and if some posters can't cope with your reasons for switching to Labour, they are the ones with a problem.

She was not kicked out. She chose to go. Because of some rather offensive comments about what the Irish did during WW2 which seemed OTT and unnecessary. I hope she comes back. But it's her call.

Please stay. We need more Douglas Adams fans.
As for WW2, it just shows how dementedly stuck in the past some of the PB Tories are.
Frankly, the world would be much shitter without the Irish.
Mind you, some days i'm like 'f*** the EU, lets go it alone', and then most days i'm 'Lets get the best deal possible and focus then on other needed things'.
No wonder she’s also been banned from Twitter.

@Alanbrooke is also missing from Leave, as re those two Welsh posters. Edit: and @Ishmael_Z
Which side should he/she be?
I think that right of centre Remainers are far more heavily represented here than in the general population, left of centre Remainers are much less heavily represented,
Remember this 9% is of the Labour voters. Let's say 9% of 40% = 3.6% of the total.
Yes, that is significant. However, a similar number of Tory "Remainers" have moved in the opposite direction.
Just look at HYUFD, Carlotta here.
That’s not what I said
