Clear out the deadwood. The more members of the old gang quit in the first year of this five year parliament, the more space will be freed up for younger more able up and coming people. There is nothing indispensable or remarkable about Damien Green. He is a mediocrity.
None of this will be remembered in 2022.

Are we not all kinda bored of this stuff now? I think Green has been strengthened by the absurd tactics of former cops like Quick which engendered some sympathy and a lot of indignation. I don't think the Kate Maltby allegations were ever particularly serious and she in fairness seemed to have no desire to make much of them.

I think May will let this simmer unless something a lot more damaging comes out. She needs Green's support and reshuffles in this government seem to be even more difficult than they were in the Coalition.

I would not be tempted to bet on Green being next out even at 3/1, let alone the current odds.

If she really is unenthusiastic about Hammond, the best reason to appoint a First Sec is to make sure he is not the de facto Deputy PM.

I wouldn't be at all surprised. The gravity (if any) of the offence isn't really the issue, rather his absolute denials of anything happening, and as it's not the police/porn thing there is no principled reason for his clinging on.
In addition, it's felt he's in danger of being forced out anyway, choosing the time of his departure has the benefit os hanging on to some semblance of dignity.

Last, and not least, May has a breathing space in which she can easily weather his departure. She's wrong-footed many of her critics with the last minute stage 1 deal, both internal and external, and has as good a chance now as she's likely to get of promoting someone who is in her camp.

From personal experience, the membership will not countenance a Remainer until we are out.

After that, things will be different.

Ladbrokes' rules state 'Dead heat if more than one leave on the same day' so only part of your stake is a winner.

So if two cabinet ministers resign on the same day only half your stake wins, if three cabinet ministers resign on the same day, only a third of your stake is a winner, so on and so forth.
