    Quite why Hammond is considered a more electorally-appealing potential leader than May is beyond me

    On economics he seems to be an unreconstructed Thatcherite, which is not going to win over "Mansfield Man", and I think his stances on certain social issues (thinking of gay marriage in particular) will be toxic with young people and middle-class liberals. And it's not like he has a dynamite personality to cover up his weaknesses, though admittedly he's a little better at thinking on his feet in interviews than May is.
