Farage's problem/challenge is that the newspapers that would normally take his comments and run with them are now totally focused on bigging up the Tories. This may reduce their impact if his target demographic is not watching a debate. It's got far, far harder for him to make the political weather.

I think that is a fair point...The Mail and Telegraph have definitely rolled in behind the Tories in the past few weeks after spending years giving them a kicking.
The Times (unfortunately) has become very Tory supporting over the past few years.
We know where the Sun and the Mirror sits.
I never ever look at the Express, but I presume they are the only paper that might say UKIP give them a whirl.
Guardian and Indy, I presume will say get the clothes peg and vote Labour.
If Farage had got 1% more in the average of the polls at the expense of Cameron, then the betting on the Ladbrokes board would have correctly predicted the exact order of the seven runners. Then the Ladbrokes PR dept could (and probably would) have claimed that the betting nailed it.
You are giving us more reasons not to bet with you.

Ladbrokes aren't paying out on the average of the polls. Sadly.
"The YouGov polls show that in Thurrock, which is currently held by the Tories, Ukip are now on 44 per cent, with Labour in second on 38.2 per cent and the Conservatives back in third on 34.2 per cent.
In Rochford and Southend East, again a constituency currently held by the Tories, Ukip are now just two points behind with YouGov claiming the vote is "too close to call".
The Conservatives lead on 42.9 per cent, Ukip are second on 41.1 per cent with Labour third on 30.8 per cent. "

Those numbers add up to a lot more than 100%!
And isam introduced us to Thurrock when the odds were very long :-)
I find it amazing that other political leaders have been so quick to shout down Farage's health tourism argument but the BBC IPSOS worm showed a highly positive response to his central argument. Making the NHS exclusive to British nationals/residents is a no-brainer and while I think the HIV comment may have crossed a line on specifics, Farage got it right and he again comes across as the only politician who is willing to call a spade a spade.
If the opposition debate includes a segment on policing/security he is absolutely going to wipe the floor with Ed on CSE in Rotherham and Rochdale.
If he mentions CSE, which he should, you can put money on the liberal left going absolutely ballistic accusing him of politicising the issue. Once again the WWC will lap it up whilst the guardianistas will be choking on their lentil soup.
Why just the white working class?
Wasn't it a liberal, metropolitan journalist who uncovered the story; and another liberal metropolitan who conducted the enquiry?
Because they are the ones being sneered at by politicians such as Emily Thornberry.
Their actions are commendable but do not change the fact that tens of thousands of young children have been abused due to the failures of local councils, police, social services, etc. as they did not want to upset community cohesion.
OT Culinary Advice. I haven't eaten fillet beef in years and just bought two - what should I have with it?
I've a fridge packed to the gunnels with almost every normal veg you can think of and a freezer full of everything else. And then there's an enormous range of herbs and spices.
Not much you can do but lightly fry in a lot of butter. Some people put a lobe of foies gras on the top too. It needs it and can take it as there's hardly any fat on it. I'd have it with some tender stem broccoli and potato dauphinoise or similar. And a rich stock.
That's health advice as well as culinary advice by the way. Saturated fats are actually essential for health and by no means the enemies they're made out to be.

Did you see Andrew Norfolk on the Trevor Phillips programme?
Day of reflection. Farage did okay as he hit home with the audience he was aiming at. Wood did okay because she focused pretty much on Wales. Sturgeon did okay as the head spinning and projectile vomiting at the BBC is proof of that. Bennett will peel maybe some votes from the Lib Dems so she did okay. Clegg was on a loser from the start and he seemed philosophical about it but then what could he do. Cameron did okay because Millibland hypnosis routine didn't work. They all did okay except for Millibland and in the dark seedy smokey rooms of SLAB they will be thinking up ways to get rid of him and replace him over the Easter Weekend.

Seeing the white working class as a cohesive group of people who all see the world in the same way is being just as patronising as Thornberry. Not all members of the white working class drive white vans.
But I agree that far too many young people of all colours have been victims of sexual abuse because they have been let down by the authorities. It's been happening for far too long.
If this issue is raised in the next debate - and hopefully it will be - let's hope we get some suggestions for tackling it as well as finger pointing.

Cut fillet into small cubes, fry in butter and garlic long enough to seal the outside but leave the inside pink, allow to cool, give to cat, sit back with a large drink and bask in the sound of contented purrs.

People without EHIC cards are already charged. I suppose that the HIV victims in Farages anecdote are mainly african, and get a bill for costs already.
Can someone explain to me - how exactly did Emily Thornberry sneer at the WWC? If people are assuming that on the basis of her tweet about Rochester then I think they are only revealing their own prejudices against people like Thornberry who live in Islington!

UKIP's common sense solutions are at their most dangerous when applied to public health - we should all be grateful we had Norman Fowler and not Nigel Farage as health secretary in the mid 80's.

I walked out of my house this afternoon and the most astonishing thing happened. Four people carrying red leaflets bounded towards me. As I walked past them I realised the bits of paper had the words Labour written on them. Having lived here for nearly two years I think this was the first evidence of political campaigning I have come across. I'm aware there is apparently a general election taking place in parts of Britain but I hadn't seen any evidence with my own eyes. They waked straight passed and then to my surprise I walked past a building with Labour posters all over it. Turns out I live right be my local MP's office. I'm slightly embarrassed to say I'd never actually realised that. I must walk past to Tesco's two or three times a week. I'm quite looking forward to having a doorstop canvasser come by so I can give them a piece of my mind but won't be too optimistic.

At least Ed M's position on white van man is clear.

The bizarre thing about the whole farrago was the fact the tweet of itself revealed the prejudice of a lot of middle-class hacks and bloggers who immediately decided 'ha she's sneering at the working class', when they saw it, because it's what they'd have done. Thornberry could've shrugged it off fairly easily as people being deliberately obtuse- but gave an utterly terrible interview to The Mail which confirmed the suspicion, by the end of the day she had to go for party reasons - a frontbencher who's been an utter twonk is a liability, unless apparently his other name is Michael Green.
A sad day for politics as it was imbecilic and patronising on everyone's part.

Fact.
As you say, it was her follow up statements which made things so much worse, not that it made sacking her silly for what it was.

Indeed, I had my Sturgeon bet on with W Hill, which was frustrating. Interestingly when looking through the data tables I noted that You Gov weighted by the voting intention of the 4 mainstream parties. If they had weighted by SNP as well, Sturgeon would have been a further 4 to 5% ahead. Ouch !!

Fillet. A small amount of olive oil on both sides of your fillet, plenty of salt and pepper. Grill for two mins a side for rare, three for medium rare. Leave to stand under some foil after cooking for at least 5 minutes before eating. Serve with oven roasted romaine red peppers, sliced lengthhways, plus field mushrooms peeled and cooked slowly in a pan with butter. Add chips to taste and a good red wine.

I'm willing!
From experience I can tell you scoffing an entire tube of Pringles is a bad idea. On the occasions I've done it (it took several for the correlation with the negative effects to become obvious to me) I had hot and cold flashes and gut trouble all night as a result.

It isn't a great piece of journalism. The poll is actually a yougov nowcast which is a poll of sorts but gives a range figure rather than a specific share of vote % Looks like in this case they're using the top of the range figure for each party hence it adds up to more than 100.

I think that it is difficult to extrapolate from these "debate" markets to other aspects of political betting. In a 7 way debate there is no form book to guide, and therefore more chance of an outsider to come in.
I suspect it will be a more accurate picture in constituency markets where form is fairly well established.
I predict will we see polls all over the place over the next week. Debate + Easter hols.
Someone earlier I think posted info claiming easter hols don't have as much of a disrupting impact as is commonly thought, but it would seem entirely expected for the debate (and its coverage) to have had some impact at least. Lab and Con both below 30 (despite decent performances from both leaders) would be a funny one. Hopefully no side will panic this time though.

Currently only urgent or emergency care is given. Perhaps kippers would prefer people to die quietly in the street rather than be patched up and sent off with a bill.
If having health insurance was made compulsory to get a visa before travelling to Britain, would that be enforced on the whole world and be the end of visa free travel? It would not do much for our tourism and international business travellers...

So we have existing rules, and resulting debts that have to be written off. That much is clear.
What is not clear is how Farage is planning to change this. What new rules are to be enforced, and how are uncollectable debts to be collected?
The biggest health tourists that I encounter are British nattionals resident overseas who fly back when needing treatment.
And how many of those are retirees who have already paid into the system for most of their lives.
I suspect a large number although I am sure you would not want to admit it.
I suspect most of them are, but if not resident for more than a year they are not eligible. If Indigo arrived here from the Philipines then he should be charged under current rules.

How generous of them. If the staff had to pick up the bill rather than the abstract taxpayer, I'd guess their oh so caring open handedness would radically and rapidly change.
How would UKIP handle the matter differently?
Currently only urgent or emergency care is given. Perhaps kippers would prefer people to die quietly in the street rather than be patched up and sent off with a bill.
If having health insurance was made compulsory to get a visa before travelling to Britain, would that be enforced on the whole world and be the end of visa free travel? It would not do much for our tourism and international business travellers...
Clearly from the piece I linked to that is not the case. Nor apparently from the Guido piece just linked to by Isam.

Especially A&E. It is the most pressured resource. Those without travel insurance should not be able to use the service at no cost.
I don`t have statistics but in the marginals Labour are well organised with volunteer groups out atleast a few days each week to identify and get their vote out come polling day.

It's only a matter of time before Carswell falls out with Farage.
To me it seems a blatantly obvious good cop / bad cop routine... Having met both in clacton and heard Carswells victory speech in the pub afterwards, it seems he held Farage in very high regard
Voters I canvassed in Frinton said they loved Carswell but were put off by Farages abrupt manner... I explained that in upper middle class areas, 'Dougies' manner was perfect... But in working class areas more straight talking is required and that's Farages job

Nope the idea is that the existing rules are tightened and strengthened to ensure they are complied with.
Apart from your idiotic knee jerk objection to anything suggested by UKIP I am not sure what your problem is with this since you clearly accept the problem exists.

It's only a matter of time before Carswell falls out with Farage.
Carswell and Farage have fallen out with a lot of people in their pasts so your forecast is inevitable.
I would remind everyone the Coalition Economic record is decidedly pitiful over the last 5 years based on mathematical analysis.
In 1996, in last recession under John Major Conservative government the unemployment rate was 8.5%. When the Labour government came into government in 1997 it was 7.5%.
During the height of Credit Crunch, under Gordon Brown leadership is only reached 8%. Therefore, the Credit Crunch can be viewed as typical UK recession, in terms of employment. The length recession can viewed, on the objective facts and empirical evidence as prolonged recovery caused by the foolish Austerity Program of cuts to governmental expenditures, which delayed the recovery, until George Osborne pursued policy options akin to a return to a Credit Expansionary Bubble in assets, primarily focused on property assets.
Over the last 5 years, the Trade Union negotiated pay cuts to salaries, below the rate of RPI (inflation) of about 6%. These pay cuts allowed more people to be employed, simply by the variables of businesses hiring more stuff at the same expenditure on salaries as they did at the height of recession in 2008.
As an example, 29.4 million people are in employment, whose wages are lowered by 6.% via deflation of salaries compared to Retail Price Index (inflation). This allows more people to be employed, this allows business or the government to employ an extra 1.764 million people for the same total expenditure on salaries as the did in compared to 2008 or 2010. This largely explains why the tax income today is remaining as bad as it is in most recessions during the post war era.
1,764,000 divide by 5 (years) divided by 365 (days) equals 966 jobs created each day over the Coalition governments term in public office. Everyone is poorer, and it pays considerably less to be employment then when the Labour Party was in government.
Any idiot can cut wages and hire extra staff, but this is not why people elect political parties to govern a country - they elect a government to be paid more wages from their current employment. This is not governance, it meaningless governance, which delivers nothing (a bit like diet drinks, zero calories, yet has the aesthetic aspects of being nice to taste), it massive con-job on the UK electorate.

I find it hard to believe I could ever take out as much as I have paid in.
Don't worry, Salmond is doing it for you with his six pensions
I am sure he doesn't have 6 , certainly will have a good few but he has worked for them so fair play to him. Anybody that works all their life and pays into pensions etc deserves them. I do think politicians in general award themselves far too generous pensions compared to ordinary people and so a curse on them all for filling their own pockets in short term very generous deals whilst wrecking most ordinary people's long term deals down to a pittance. Self interest seems to be the main driving force of majority of politicians.

I thought many had commentated that the unusual thing about the recession was the job aspect, so characterising the recession based on the employment figures seems a bit counterintuitive.
"The YouGov polls show that in Thurrock, which is currently held by the Tories, Ukip are now on 44 per cent, with Labour in second on 38.2 per cent and the Conservatives back in third on 34.2 per cent.

Those numbers add up to a lot more than 100%!
And isam introduced us to Thurrock when the odds were very long :-)
It;s not a poll, it's just yougov's upper limit nowcast forecast. No wonder it doesn't make sense.
" YouGov’s Nowcast uses a mathematical formula with data from across the country to predict voting intentions.
The Nowcast gives candidates an upper and lower range of percentage of votes, these statistics show the upper range. "

Each time you use the NHS you are taking out etc etc
Yes I am well aware of that , however the amount I have paid over the last 40 years will take more than my lifetime to be used up.
For me the NHS is not free , I am paying very handsomely for it and use sparingly as I go private in the main. It is a good thing but far from free and far from great , it could be improved.

So what do we do, wait for a peer-reviewed double-blind placebo-controlled prospective cohort study into the question? Oh and with full disclosure on funding, obv. It must be exhausting having a conversation with you.
A modest canvass (5 of us) in pouring rain. Marginal changes each way over 6 months ago, but no detectable trends. Number of people who mentioned the debates: sadly zero (apart from one of the canvassers).
Anecdote of the day: a voter was insistent on knowing my position on assisted dying: "I want it brought in while I'm still alive!"
And what is your position on assisted dying, please? How did you answer the voter? Those two questions may or may not be covered in one answer
For the record I agree with your voter that I would like us to have the freedom to exercise this choice in the UK within my lifetime.

Hungary, a member of the EU enforces mandatory health insurance for non-EU/EEA countries, conflating visa free travel with health insurance is a nonsense, listen, you can hear the difference "excuse me sir, can you show me your passport and visa" verses "excuse me sir, can you show me your valid health insurance certificate", see, not so hard.

FT, probably reluctant vote Tory again.

Their actions are commendable but do not change the fact that tens of thousands of young children have been abused due to the failures of local councils, police, social services, etc. as they did not want to upset community cohesion.
That's health advice as well as culinary advice by the way. Saturated fats are actually essential for health and by no means the enemies they're made out to be.
But I agree that far too many young people of all colours have been victims of sexual abuse because they have been let down by the authorities. It's been happening for far too long.
If this issue is raised in the next debate - and hopefully it will be - let's hope we get some suggestions for tackling it as well as finger pointing.
Great for lazy journalists, crap for us punters.

A sad day for politics as it was imbecilic and patronising on everyone's part.
As you say, it was her follow up statements which made things so much worse, not that it made sacking her silly for what it was.

Looks like in this case they're using the top of the range figure for each party hence it adds up to more than 100.

I think that it is difficult to extrapolate from these "debate" markets to other aspects of political betting. In a 7 way debate there is no form book to guide, and therefore more chance of an outsider to come in.
I suspect it will be a more accurate picture in constituency markets where form is fairly well established.

'The NHS budget is not yet part of the foreign aid budget, nor should it be. Despite the distaste of the political class, the screams of outrage from the gay lobby and the commentariat, the facts are the facts. On this billion pound question, Farage was right about the facts.'
If you are one,I will believe you.
Off out for dinner now.
Voters I canvassed in Frinton said they loved Carswell but were put off by Farages abrupt manner... I explained that in upper middle class areas, 'Dougies' manner was perfect... But in working class areas more straight talking is required and that's Farages job

Apart from your idiotic knee jerk objection to anything suggested by UKIP I am not sure what your problem is with this since you clearly accept the problem exists.
No wonder it doesn't make sense.
" YouGov’s Nowcast uses a mathematical formula with data from across the country to predict voting intentions.
The Nowcast gives candidates an upper and lower range of percentage of votes, these statistics show the upper range. "
For me the NHS is not free , I am paying very handsomely for it and use sparingly as I go private in the main. It is a good thing but far from free and far from great , it could be improved.
UKIP were up one point to 18%, and the Greens were down one point to 3%.

"Voters’ intentions were largely unchanged from 10 days ago, with Labour two points clear of the Tories by 33% to 31%."
Also, buried at the end of article:
Voters’ intentions were largely unchanged from 10 days ago, with Labour two points clear of the Tories by 33% to 31%.
UKIP were up one point to 18%, and the Greens were down one point to 3%.
The Lib Dems were unchanged on 9%.
Those two questions may or may not be covered in one answer
For the record I agree with your voter that I would like us to have the freedom to exercise this choice in the UK within my lifetime.
