In reference to Mike's tweet, if George Osborne becomes PM do you think they'll start spelling his name correctly?

    PM after Cameron
    Ed Miliband 10/11
    Boris Johnson 6/1
    George Osbourne 14/1
    Theresa May 14/1

Regarding a potential election all-nighter in a pub: I've been reading this site since 2004 but have rarely commented. I am a publican. Have a pub by Earl's Court - the Finborough Arms - with a good set-up for this type of event and would host. Big TV screen on wall visible from everywhere in the bar, wifi, open plan layout. If site admins are interested just email me finborougharms at gmail!

Wow - one of the original PB'ers of yonder. What a fantastic offer. Welcome!
Sounds like a brilliant idea to me. Unfortunately I may be a bit tied up that evening... :-)

Labour PPC in election night bondage shocker !!

On the so-called left wing Scotland v right wing England thing:

Scots even want to keep nuclear weapons!

    Arf. And CHORTLE.

And goodnight from a gloriously sultry Bangkok.

Simultaneously amusing and a little annoying really. Politics on both sides of the border seem intent on pressing the idea, or accepting the idea, that the two places are fundamentally different in significant ways, and that has an impact on how people vote, who they think they should vote for (as seen also in England when peoples' approval of a policy idea changes depending on who is proposing it), when the differences, not just here but elsewhere, are not generally as stark as is perceived to be the case. It's annoying because we are moving further apart in perception all the time. I am quite certain this and other similar results in the past will be stated not to be true.
  • In case anyone missed it earlier:

It's that time of the week again - the Sunil on Sunday ELBOW (Electoral Leader-Board Of the Week), 12 polls (inc. both of Sunday's YG), total weighted sample 14,511:

    Lab 33.3 (-0.1)
    Con 31.7 (-0.6)
    UKIP 16.1 (+1.4)
    LD 7.1 (-0.5)
    Green 6.3 (-0.1)

    Lab lead 1.6 (+0.5)

UKIP recover some lost ground, their first significant increase in ELBOW since November
Labour will be happy that the lead over the Tories is still intact
Greens slowly but surely catching up with LibDems

I'm curious. Theresa May is urging us all not to be anti-Semitic, but apart from the daftness that is the Middle East is there anyone that has anything at all bad to say about anyone of the Jewish faith, or race?

I heard recently too that there were some very hostile acts conducted against Buddhists in Thailand. Why?

Now I can completely understand wishing to poke a Christian in the eye (verbally, not literally), and so too a Muslim - I've met many examples of both faiths that are bloody annoying. What I'm asking though is whether it's really the case that I've led some sort of charmed life and have failed to meet all the evil Jews, and evil Buddhists which people seem to rail against?

If someone tells me that I'm daft as a brush for my Atheism I don't mind at all - you can bang on all day about it, I won't mind. If on the other hand I tell someone of faith that they might (just might) be wrong it'll undoubtedly cause them to become almost sulphur-emitting.

Jews are great. Muslims are great. Christians are great, and any other religion you might pick. There's the odd daft belief here and there, but hey who am I to comment - although I don't get my daft beliefs out of a belief-cook-book I'm no less prone to them.

How did I know that comments would be disabled on the following article on the Guardian's website:

    http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2015/jan/18/theresa-may-pledges-extra-police-patrols-counter-antisemitism-threat

It seems that whenever I click on Jewish related articles on the Guardian the comments are disabled. I wonder why...

There are a disappointing number of people who think that Jews and Israelis are one and the same. There was meant to be a protest outside of a synagogue in Cambridge over the violence in Gaza.

    http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/Gaza-protest-outside-synagogue-Cambridge-Palestine-Forum-cancelled-following-online-backlash-accusations-antisemitism/story-22821189-detail/story.html

Again, supposedly intelligent people incapable of differentiating between Jews and Israelis.

PTP. Roger - "I don't believe this poll is an outlier. From what I hear the gloss is rapidly fading from Nicola and as predicted Murphy is proving a smart operator. As Westminster's obviously a two horse race the Nat's are going to get squeezed. The desire to get rid of the Tories will always trump a wistful vision of what might have been. Also Murphy's brilliant poster won't have done any harm."

There will be much gnashing of nationalist teeth at news of Jim Murphy's latest campaign...

Can anyone provide some insight on why do parties to the right of the political spectrum poll so badly in Scotland?

We care much more about people who hit hard times and so tend to dislike grasping rightwing Tory vultures who would sell their granny if it made them money. Fine to be hard working and make it but silver spoon/greedy arsewipes who spit on the poor are not so popular.
What a self serving load of bigoted rubbish. You care so much why is the health of the scottish nation so bad?
    And really, 'care so much'??
'CHILDREN in Scotland have been the victims of evil ritual abuse including rape, murder and even the production of so-called ‘snuff films’ '
'One veteran campaigner said he had even heard of babies being born and never registered, so the innocent youngsters would not be missed when they were eventually killed by secret paedophile networks.'

You have no link to rationality at all with your self righteous comments. The health of people in Glasgow is appalling. Alcohol related deaths in central Scotland are appalling. One in three Scottish teenagers is binge drinking by the age of 13.

The Israelis aren't particularly bad, or evil though either.

Let's suppose that we're talking about the Clangers - they believe in the soup dragon. Now if their nation is threatened they may act in all sorts of preposterous ways, but their belief in the big-tomato-paste doesn't have any intrinsic impact on the way they do so.

I'd urge all the religions of the world to unite against their common enemy... that'd be an alien living on an asteroid - he's very cunning, it's a small asteroid, and he's hoping you might blow up all the holy other asteroids - anyway he's called Tim. (OMG!)

Sure, I'm of course somewhat exceeding the bounds of serious debate. Not by far though.

She should say so. She hasn't. I think she's been wise not to do so.

Although I'm very much of an inclusionist view, I'm not afraid of the idea that we should throw those who disrupt our society into the channel.

What's your current view on the Syrian situation? I recall you were optimistic about the opposition's chances a while back, but it now seems totally deadlocked in the south while ISIS is chugging ahead in the north?

Depends how you view it. I think Assad still has a clock running, particularly since are signs of cracks in his own Alawite sect, but its not the same opposition anymore.
