"super effective" - that's one word for it.

David Milliband throwing the towel in? Let's hope his diplomacy skills have improved, if he's gonna work for the IRC.

Labour received the support of exactly 30% of the electorate in 2010, 520% on a 57.7% turnout:

Isnt South Shields the only constituency never to have elected a Tory or something?

    Correct. Also according to Wiki:

With one exception (Arthur Blenkinsop), every South Shields MP since 1929 has been a cabinet member at some point in their career. Two of them, Chuter Ede (Home Secretary) and Miliband (Foreign Secretary), have held one of the great offices of state while MP for South Shields.

So Ed Miliband has effectively ended his brother's career- not sure how the Labour leader spins that.

After all the criticism that Louise Mensch got on this site for stepping down to head to New York to be with her husband, I wonder if the same posters will direct the same criticism at David Miliband for heading off to New York and pastures new?

Sorry to hear about DH. But it'll be a good test of the theory that UKIP is also a threat to Labour heartlands.

Not sure i've ever heard anyone say heartlands? I thought the idea was seats where a defection of a 1/3 each from Labour, Tory, and LD all defecting at the same time could win - which i assume limits it to marginals?

You can bet the Labour vote will go down. But it is not quite a marginal. However, more surprising things has happened.

This idea that Ed Miliband is responsible for David's departure to NY is preposterous. What was he supposed to do ? Acquiesce to his brother's coronation ? Remember, this is the Labour Party not some kind of monarchy.
