    Boring thread:

Not much happening. Shame no-one is picking up on DC's comment late-last-thread. But what do we expect these days...?

Just watching Episode 9 of the new Game of Thrones. It is eerie how closely it mirrors the indyref debate.

Even as the ponces in the south airily discuss an eastern war, the hideous northern trolls are swarming over the nation's walls.

But we cannot let the Wall be breached. Not on our watch.

Apt. Although I imagine the Indys would have preferred season 1 and the proud North declaring its independence from the poncy south whom they feel no cultural ties to, ruled from some 'flowery seat in the south', as a comparison

    9/11 anniversary

Not wanting to alarm people, but is anyone else on here more concerned than usual about next week's 9/11 anniversary?

There's been the story about the Libyan airliners in the hands of Islamic militants, and the article below from Israeli intelligence website Debka is worth a look, what do people think?

Credible information has reached Saudi, British and Australian agencies that two al Qaeda branches – IS in Iraq and Syria and AQAP at its base in Yemen - have wrapped up plans to roll out coordinated terrorist spectaculars around the 13th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York and Washington. According to DEBKAfile’s counterterrorism sources, they are preparing to strike simultaneously in the Middle East and a West European city. Next, they will go for US targets in the Middle East and Europe.

Ask not for whom the Bell tolls, Ed...
Mr Hollande is suffering a moral and political crisis, added the newspaper, the voice of France’s left-leaning establishment. “The impotence of the executive is obvious. The erosion of the presidential image is terrible. The collapse of authority is worrying . . . How much time is such a situation tenable? How can the head of state hold out?” it asked.

The president’s “legitimacy is in shreds and the country’s trust in him is near zero. Sitting it out and enduring will not be enough to save his term from a cruel end,” it added.

The sense of late summer emergency has been fed by grim economic news and a chain of woes that have hit the hapless president who won power in 2012 promising to be “Monsieur Normal” after the soap-opera behaviour of Mr Sarkozy. Ten days ago left-wing cabinet members rebelled and were thrown out as Mr Hollande swung to the right, alienating many of his own voters.

It's worth noting that the Oxford by-election had a 10% turnout - unsurprising given an election was called during the summer in a ward where two thirds of the electorate are students.

They would be, but they seem to have an obsession with aeroplanes and symbolism. Now, I accept that symbolism is important to terrorists, whose method is one of the mind more than the physical. Even so, while I hesitate to give them ideas (on the off-chance that Al Qaida log onto politicalbetting), I can very easily think of much softer, more vulnerable and equally symbolic targets.

Sheeesh, Mr. B, Wandsworth's one-way system is relatively benign and easy to navigate - there is in essence one single, though quite large, roundabout. If you want to know the full horror of council planners and traffic systems go to Leeds.

Yes, expect the unexpected... The upside of a successful attack on that day for any terrorists is the "kudos" of doing it during the most heightened security.
The downside is of course the increase in failure risk.

    The new Navy lark:

The Royal Navy is proud to announce its new fleet of Type 45 destroyers.
Having initially named the first two ships HMS Daring and HMS Dauntless, the Naming Committee has, after intensive pressure from Brussels, renamed them
HMS Cautious and HMS Prudence. The next five ships are to be HMS Empathy, HMS Circumspect, HMS Nervous, HMS Timorous and HMS Apologist.

Costing £850 million each, they comply with the very latest employment, equality, health & safety and human rights laws. The Royal Navy fully expects any future enemy to be jolly decent and to employ with the same high standards of behaviour.
The new user-friendly crow’s nest has excellent wheelchair access.
Live ammunition has been replaced with paintballs to reduce the risk of anyone getting hurt and to cut down on the number of compensation claims.

Stress counsellors and lawyers will be on board, as will a full sympathetic industrial tribunal.
The crew will be 50/50 men and women, and will contain the correct balance of race, gender, sexuality and disability.
Sailors will only work a maximum of 37hrs per week as per Brussels Rules on Working Hours, even in wartime.
All the vessels are equipped with a maternity ward, a crèche and a gay disco. Tobacco will be banned throughout the ship, but recreational cannabis will be allowed in wardrooms and messes.

The Royal Navy is eager to shed its traditional reputation for; “Rum, sodomy and the lash”; so out has gone the rum ration, replaced by sparkling water.
Sodomy remains, now extended to include all ratings under 18. The lash will still be available on request.

Saluting of officers is now considered elitist and has been replaced by “Hello Sailor”.
All information on notice boards will be in 37 different languages and Braille.
Crew members will now no longer have to ask permission to grow beards and/or moustaches.
This applies equally to female crew.
The MoD is inviting suggestions for a “non-specific” flag because the White Ensign may offend minorities. The Union Jack must never be seen.

The newly re-named HMS Cautious will be commissioned shortly by Captain Hook from the Finsbury Park Mosque who will break a petrol bomb over the hull. She will gently slide into the sea as the Royal Marines Band plays “In the Navy” by the Village People.
Her first deployment will be to escort boatloads of illegal immigrants to ports on England ‘s south coast.

“I know some in Washington would like us to start leaving Iraq now. To begin withdrawing before our commanders tell us we are ready would be dangerous for Iraq, for the region, and for the United States. It would mean surrendering the future of Iraq to al Qaeda. It would mean that we’d be risking mass killings on a horrific scale. It would mean we’d allow the terrorists to establish a safe haven in Iraq to replace the one they lost in Afghanistan. It would mean increasing the probability that American troops would have to return at some later date to confront an enemy that is even more dangerous.”
