Smallest swing to Lab in a Tory seat while in government since Kincardine & Deeside 1991. Smallest in an English seat since Enfield Southgate 1984.

Both saw the return of a Tory government at the next election...

A thumping victory for Cameron and Shapps.

It is not relevant that the fall in the Conservative Party's share is only marginally better than previous by elections this term.

The key is where the awayday kippers will return to next May. And this is likely to be disproportionately to the Tories.

What has happened both during the Euro/Locals campaign and the subsequent two weeks is a strong toxification of UKIP and and lesser but important detoxification of the Conservatives.
