Have we done Nige policy on non-doms?

"Here’s how it works: every high-net-worth newcomer (or returning leaver) will pay a £250,000 one-off entry contribution in return for a stable, indefinite remittance-style regime on offshore income and a 20-year inheritance-tax shield. Crucially, 100 per cent of this contribution is hypothecated to Britain’s lowest-paid full-time workers, delivered automatically by HMRC as a tax-free cash dividend."

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2025/06/22/nigel-farage-reform-non-dom-status-help-low-earners/

He claims it will be £600-1000 a year bribe dividend for 2.5 million people....I presume no furrrneiers will be eligible.

    Clever politics from Farage.

    It's re-distribution of income.
Problem comes at the margins of course.

I do not think that Trump wants to bring democracy or anything of that sort to Iran, what he is doing cleverly is that he is deliberately delegitimizing the Islamic Republic since the Obama/Biden position has always been about elevating Khamenei at the expense of US allies.

Actually it is clever. Bait and switch. The scheme is a massive tax dodge for the super rich dressed up as income redistribution.

Pay us a fixed fee of £250 000, which we will give to people on low incomes. People will only do this, obviously, because they will avoid tax that they would otherwise have to pay.

Green levies on energy to be abandoned for manufacturing industry.

    Ed Miliband on resignation watch?

Doubt it. Love him or think he will lose Labour the 2029 election like he lost 2015, at least Ed Miliband got things done. Stay inside and he might still have a squeak at replacing Starmer.
I keep seeing him as a Penny Mordaunt figure. Different roll of the dice and he could have been PM.

Could he have held a heavy stick as well as Penny did? I'm not sure.

Jesus Christ, Iran does not own the Straits of Hormuz. Effective martime control, not territorial control is split: Iran, UAE & Oman. The most anyone has claimed as theirs is 12 miles out but this means overlap between Oman and Iran claims.

As a note, no one has ever shut the straits down and it sure as hell wont happen here either. Iran is unlikely to get it in defacto shutdown for more than a few days and even thats a challenge.

Remember what the talking heads said about Iran and how mighty it is:
    Its proxies
    Its missile forces
Its their super duper air defence system making bombing raids difficult, nay impossible
Now its, they will close the Straits of Hormuz

If they want to do anything, they need to bomb a few tankers anywhere in the Gulf. Easier, will cause similar disruption. A focus on the Straits means everyone else can focus on countering it and Iran doesn't have the clout to maintain any stranglehold.

Do not rule out Iran doing something symbolic, telegraphing it to the Americans and hoping they can draw a line.

Hey MAGA, you've been lied to all along.
It's not just the hypocrisy and deceit, how the hell is a diplomatic solution meant to happen when one side is lead by a total moron who changes his views at the drop of a hat? Iran will never trust any deal they sign, they will only sign a deal to buy time, but work on the assumption that they will be deceived, or simply Trump will forget what he agreed to and change tack.

I'll be amazed if Iran doesn't end up with the bomb now. I expect many other countries will be making plans as well, as any belief that things like the NPT, international law, or merely prior conduct, can be relied upon to protect them are now shot to pieces.
None of Israel, Iran and the USA are good faith actors. Honestly I don't think Iran is the worst of the three.
    It really is.
Actually I would agree with this. Trump's America has had about 10 years of heading into tyeanny, and Netanyahu's Iarael about 20.

But Khamenei and Khomeini's Iran is furthest down the road, at 45 to 46 years.

It is 80% a driving challenge to be honest, and not to be encouraged.

The residents of Wasdale don't appreciate loads of people turning up at 5am either (as is normally the way).

On the other hand, someone who does caring visits to my mother-in-law did the entire West Highland Way (95 miles) non-stop in just a little over 24 hours over the weekend.

Now that _is_ a good effort.

Indeed but if Tory MPs remove Kemi I expect they would replace her with Cleverly not Jenrick by coronation.

Jenrick's best hope would then be Farage and Cleverly both lose the next GE and resign so he is best placed to then take over as Conservative leader and reunite the right against what would be a likely Labour minority government propped up by the LDs

Don't be surprised if Israel declares victory shortly and calls a halt to its strikes. Remember, the military wonks reckoned they had 10 to 14 days to have a go at this before the tempo started to have an effect.

Much like the very wealthy left in the Callaghan and Wilson years in the 1970s. The only Labour leader who the very wealthy were able to tolerate as PM without many of them leaving was Blair precisely as unlike most Labour governments he didn't hammer them with tax.

Indeed but the channel for navigation does at some points run entirely through Iranian territory. And yes. They could very effectively close it - at least for a while - by throwing missles at tankers. No shipping company is going to run tankers through the Straits with the threat of being sunk.

He claims it will be £600-1000 a year bribe dividend for 2.5 million people....I presume no furrrneiers will be eligible.

    Clever politics from Farage.

Oh indeed: why would you pay £250k unless you expected to pay significantly less tax going forward?
In principle charging wealthy people a hefty flat fee on their personal taxes is a good simplification and the binary nature of it avoids the perception that people are avoiding taxes they should be paying. Maybe Farage has set the bar too low but it's a good idea.

One thing we know from all new taxes, they normally only go in one direction.

London property is about to crater

    Perfect timing.

    I'm excited.
You heading back to the UK Robert?
Not immediately. But in the next couple of years, yes.

I love LA. But I love London more.
Good time to come back. For all that I detest the current Government and its predecessors, the country is nowhere near as screwed as poor old Leon likes to make out and I am actually reasonably optimistic. Indeed by my reckoning he has been predicting the final collapse of the UK for as long as he and I have been posting on here - which is a scarily long time.

Quick Google, Osborne non-dom fee was as high as £90k per year for newbies. Existing non-doms it was more like £30k if they had been here a long time.

I can't remember, what was the size of the yearly non-dom fee Osborne introduced?
This also covers returning leavers like ... errr ... me.

As a 50 year old, it's probably not worth it to dodge inheritance tax. But if I was 65, I think I'd probably go for it.
You would also have to be confident the rules wouldn't just change 5 years down the line if there is a change of government. It is why the yearly fee is more attractive to high net worth individuals as they are paying for a benefit then and there and if it changes they haven't sunk £100ks for a promise that has been broken.

You have been proclaiming the end of the UK and all manner of disasters for the last 20 years or more. None of which have come to pass. You being wrong about this has been one of the most predictable features of this site for almost as long as it has run.

This weekend I did the Three Peaks Challenge.

Ben Nevis 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Scafell Pike 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 and Snowdon 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 in 24 hours.

How lucky we are to live in the most beautiful country in the world 🇬🇧

Quite an achievement to be honest in this heat.

What an utter w@nker. This sort of challenge causes people to drive far too fast down country roads, and has led to deaths - both on the roads and on the mountains.

The National Three Peaks Challenge is not well-regarded in walking or climbing circles.

(I did all three mountains on my coastal walk, walking to and from them from the coast. At Wasdale Head in Cumbria, a shop assistant complained when I said I was doing all three peaks. He smiled and gave a donation to the charity when I explained that I was walking between all three...)

Remember the abject HORROR when I dared to suggest that 5 weeks of paternity leave would be annoying for the mum?

    Well...

    https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/please-dont-give-my-husband-longer-paternity-leave/

I've had eleven years of paternity leave. My wife is fine with it. :)
