That's probably a pretty low value for all X in "the US [X] is the best in the world or better than average".

How many of those who voted 'Unaware' put 'Aware' as their second choice?

Are we any closer to knowing who is going to control the House?

Surely, a week on, that is the question Americans should be asking themselves. It’s absurd.

Keir Starmer refuses to back Justin Welby to continue as Archbishop of Canterbury amid questions over his future

Asked on plane to Samoa whether Welby should step down, PM replies: "That's a matter really for the church, rather than for me."

He's not off to Samoa - he's off to COP29 in Baku

Is there a less appropriate state in the world than Azerbaijan to hold such a conference?

Seems quite appropriate to me. Hypocrisy as subtle as a kick in the bollocks never seems in short supply at those things.

To be fair, past couple of months Starmer (and by extension the lobby journos) have been travelling more than Flint Knappers Weekly travel correspondent, so hard to keep up where they are.

Because the next big election is the Holyrood election in May 2026 I will have to run regular threads on AV to fill the gap.

Are basically all the other world leaders skipping COP because of its location or that there hasn't been enough progress made for an announcement they can do?

Apparently lots of nations are calling for reparations, i mean climate support, Starmer is going to be cornered again like in Samoa isn't he.

These REBEL Politicians Changed Modern Britain Forever | IEA Book Club

In this IEA Book Club event, Sir Vernon Bogdanor discusses his new book "Making The Weather: Six Politicians Who Changed Modern Britain" with IEA Executive Director Tom Clougherty. Bogdanor examines how certain politicians have shaped Britain's political landscape, focusing particularly on three figures: Aneurin Bevan, Enoch Powell, and Keith Joseph. The discussion explores how these individuals challenged the prevailing consensus of their times and influenced British politics far beyond their immediate careers.

One hour interview with Big Vern about half of his new book. What's the connection between this thread, Roy Jenkins and Nigel Farage?

I'm pretty sure that there was a referendum/ballot initiative in Alaska, and they decided to stop using there Ranked chose voting, and the 6 other states that were voting to all introduce it all voted to reject it, Did I miss something? where is it 'growing'?

Not really, they have Memorial Day in late May.

Logically, yes. If you take the average electoral system in the world (many of which are entirely phoney) then the US is better than that average.

I'm not sure who'd top out.

If the US had AV Bernie Sanders may well have run as a Socialist candidate in 2016, 2020 and 2024 with his second preferences mostly going to Clinton, Biden and Harris. Nikki Haley may also have run as an Independent conservative this year with her second preferences mostly going to Trump but with a significant minority for Harris too

FPT I agree with @Andy_JS that it was another superb article by Matthew Syed in the ST yesterday.

I'm starting to wonder if I agree with him that the Cameron administration will go down as one of the worst post WWII governments.

And I say that as someone who personally was a huge fan of David Cameron.

As an atheist I am not really sure Starmer should express a view even if he has one. Though no doubt he would prefer Welby to go given he is on the more conservative evangelical wing of the C of E (despite his support for Starmer on opposition to the Rwanda scheme of the last government) and be replaced by a liberal Catholic

David Cameron was our worst Prime Minister since Lord North. Although it is faintly embarrassing to have to exclude two of his successors as sui generis.

We did have Armistice Day, and still do, a little bit: For example, Washington state's ferry boats are supposed to toot their horns at 11:11 AM (Pacific time) today.

Business travel is grim, unless it's a few weeks/months in a cool city doing a special project. The constant pissing about between Westminster, constituency, foreign trips does not appeal at all.

Business travel (which I'm doing right now) is shit.

There are zero perks anymore, a lot more work, and a real nightmare claiming any expenses back.
