Firmer line from Gov spokes on Swiss model plot:

“These reports are categorically untrue. This Government is focussed on using our Brexit freedoms to create opportunities that drive growth and strengthen our economy. 1/2

“Brexit means we will never again have to accept a relationship with Europe that would see a return to freedom of movement, unnecessary payments to the European Union or jeopardise the full benefit of trade deals we are now able to strike around the world.” 2/2

But doesn’t really address problem that a “senior government figure” quite clearly told the Sunday Times it was being considered.

As far as Brexit is concerned there is no going back. We left as King of the Castle, we can't return as the Court Jester.

I am reminded of the Mafia Boss in the Italian Job on learning of the traffic jam in Turin:"The English are not so stupid as they look. They planned this jam, they must have planned a way out of it". So Nigel, Boris and Rishi you planned this jam we are in, what is your planned way out of it?

Since some of you are more than mildly interested in the EU, perhaps you can answer this question, which I have been wondering about, for years. Was joining the euro good for Greece?

(My impression is that it was very bad, and that their economy has still not recovered completely, but, if I am wrong, feel free to tell me so.)

I did a video on Italy and the Euro here: https://youtu.be/kc0FwoIsDMI

Yes, Dole replaced Nelson Rockefeller, thanks to pressure from the resurgent right.

Breaking - mass shooting incident in a club in Colorado Springs; a number of deaths

Five people have been killed and at least 18 injured in a shooting at a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs in the US.

In a statement, the club - Club Q - called the shooting a "hate attack" and said customers overpowered the gunman.

    https://news.sky.com/story/five-killed-18-injured-in-us-gay-nightclub-hate-attack-12751571
But these paragraphs from the story must be a classic...

"Lt Castro said officers were able to immediately enter the venue, and located one individual they believed to be the suspect."
"They are now in custody and being treated for injuries at a local hospital."

The suspect was male and singular. The American use of pronouns makes the story a complete nonsense.
Recent history suggests that many officers belong in custody...but it's not usual for them to arrest themselves while in hospital.

It was a bit more than that, I think. Ford was hesitating over whether to keep Rockefeller on or not because of pressure from Goldwater and Reagan, so Rockefeller withdrew.

In any case, it's another example of a president changing his running mate.

That is not entirely unlike the resigned/sacked non distinction.

I note you omitted the rather more informative bit:
… With the moderate Ford facing continued difficulty in securing the support of conservative Republicans for the 1976 presidential nomination, and anticipating a challenge from the conservative Ronald Reagan, he considered the possibility of another running mate, and discussed it with Rockefeller. In November 1975, Rockefeller offered to withdraw. Ford eventually concurred, and in explaining his decision Rockefeller said that he "didn't come down (to Washington) to get caught up in party squabbles which only make it more difficult for the President in a very difficult time ..."[102][103]

After Ford was nominated at the 1976 Republican National Convention, Reagan, Barry Goldwater, and other prominent conservatives conditioned their support for Ford on his selection of a suitable vice presidential nominee. Ford considered several candidates, including moderate-to-liberal Republicans such as William Ruckelshaus, and moderate-to-conservative Republicans including Bob Dole, and eventually decided upon Dole as the most acceptable to conservatives.[citation needed]

Ford is the most recent incumbent president to not choose his incumbent vice president as his running mate. Ford later said not choosing Rockefeller was one of his biggest mistakes,[104] and "one of the few cowardly things I did in my life."…

Still, only a grand a month for pokey flat.

Looks very nice to me. The great thing about renting is after all that you don't need to worry about window handles etc. - if they snap, it's the landlord's job to fix them, and if the landlord is consistently useless you can move somewhere else. For what it's worth, I've never had a problem with corporate landlords - they've always fixed problems faster than I could have done. Private landlords are more of a lottery, and at the bottom of the market they're still horrible.
It does look very nice. I'm just a bit wary of glossy new builds. Especially after quite a few years of developers here selling 'luxury' flats then scarpering ('boo hoo, we've gone "bankrupt"') when they begin to fall apart.

Also a lot of privately/corporate student accommodation here is shamefully badly managed which taints my view of the sector.

It’s a difficult counterfactual, because it is hard to know how Greek governments would have behaved outside the euro

What we can say is that recovery inside the euro is proving mighty challenging. Greek GDP per capita is STILL $10k down from its pre crash high. What’s more you can see this painfully in less touristy parts of the country. The suburbs of Athens are grim and poor. Towns on the mainland can feel more like Tunisia than the EU. And so many shuttered businesses

Greece was pretty shitty before the Euro.

And they issued far too much foreign currency denominated debt even before joining.

But there can be little doubt that the Euro has made their problems significantly harder than they would otherwise have been.

That struck me as plausible, but hard to prove completely.)

Ecuador are possible 2nd round opponents for England - if we win our group and Ecuador finish second in theirs or vice versa.

Good pub quiz question: what was Eleanor Roosevelt's maiden name?
    This is her husband

    Golly

What I didn't realise, is, "The wedding date was set to accommodate President Theodore Roosevelt, who was scheduled to be in New York City for the St. Patrick's Day parade, and who agreed to give the bride away." Eleanor's dad having died of falling out of a window while drunk.

    https://www.solastariverside.com/apartments

When any old shit sells, just a well a properly made stuff…

A friend is on the management board of a block. When the needed to change the cladding, the engineers told them that the building was structurally marginal. Already. The original builders were a sub contractor of a big name. The big name had to step in, or lose their reputation in a big way, to fix the problem.
Do you mean it would fall down if they took the foam plastic off the outside?! What sort of remedial works were needed, do you know?

The new fireproof cladding would weigh 300 tons more IIRC,

The engineers looked at the building and said that some parts of the structure were already at 98% of theoretical load.

They are adding fucktons of reinforced concrete to the pillars holding the building up.

This football is shite. Makes you realise the incredible quality of the Premier League and Champions League. We are spoiled

A key problem is that the standard of those two events are so high because not only do you have the worlds best players in them, but the standard of coaching / tactics / analytics etc is on a totally different level. However, it requires months, if not years, of drilling the players to be able to perform at that level consistently. The likes of Man City and Liverpool now expect it to take a year before their new signings are fully up to speed with the nuances of the tactical approaches they are trying to deploy. Man City famously have special training pitches with differing mini boxes sprayed onto them and Pep has all ages grouped being drilled relentlessly in tactics based upon if player 1 in his box 1, player 2 must be in box 3 / player 3 moves to box 4...etc etc etc.

Gone of the days of 4-4-2, bang it wide to the winger, who crosses in it. Formations and positions are fluid ever changing depending on game scenarios.

In comparison, national teams, they get a week here and there to try and come together to formulate a cohesive tactical system.

Betting angle, back Kane to get a yellow card tomorrow and yellow card in the first 10 mins.

The Football Association has been told by Fifa its regulations do not allow for Harry Kane to wear the “OneLove” armband designed to express solidarity with marginalised people, including the criminalised gay community, at the Qatar World Cup finals.

The latest conversation, part of a standard meeting between team officials and the Fifa match commissioner on Sunday, has left the FA deeply frustrated with Fifa on the eve of the first game against Iran.

There is concern among some European nations who have pledged to wear the armband in Qatar that the team captain could be subject to a booking as soon as the game kicks off, although that has not yet been conveyed to the players.

    My understanding is "not officially".

The point is, of course, that there's plenty of things to protest about in both Qatar and Iran, and England are risking sidelining that by provoking arguments about BLM-inspired kneeling.

That would be truly brave. I hope one of the players has the cullions to give it a go if they score
How would you feel if they all did that while taking the knee kneeling before the game?

Just realised that Elon Musk owning Twitter is literally Elon Musk owning the libs

Is it? iirc Twitter's algorithm leans to the right. Maybe you mean the workers, those who are left.

ETA come to think of it, who has Musk's $40 billion made rich? I've not seen stories of Twitter employees with valuable share options. Maybe that all happened when Twitter floated.

I'm guessing the Euro was a net bad for Greece - but it is worth pointing out the country has received massive fiscal transfers from the EU, which should mitigate the effects relative to not being in the Euro in the first place.

Interestingly the third worst country in Europe over for income stagnation since the GFC, after Greece and Cyprus is the UK. Germany and France on the other hand have done quite well.
