...Indeed. Conspiracy of the merchants stuff. Incidentally I seem to recall that one then very prominent right-winger deleted some of that stuff from an edition of the Wealth of Nations to make the Kirkcaldy sage, erm, more 'libertarian'. But that was a long time ago.Pure capitalism as described by Adam Smith has a very strong role for Government.Has communism worked anywhere?Where has capitalism worked?
I can think of two places where Fascism arguably worked
Spain, perhaps
Chile, definitely
Nowhere, as pure capitalism has never been attempted. It has always had a 'public' aspect - even in the USA.

The Farage Party and its dropouts are starting to say the quiet part loudly.Corollary: whilst stemming/stopping the boats is necessary, it won't be sufficient to placate a significant slice of public opinion. For them the Blairwave and Boriswave were such awful things that they must be reversed as well.
"Deporting the illegal migrants is just the start.
A huge number of legal migrants need to go home too - if they're not upholding their end of the deal, then goodbye.
Difficult for some to hear, but it is absolutely necessary."

It is tempting for those who, like me, have immigrant family and friends to think: "Ah, they're not the ones Lowe's talking about. They uphold their end of the deal."
This is wrong for two reasons. Firstly, Lowe is changing the debate from illegal immigration in boats, to legal immigration. It can change further. Secondly, what is 'upholding their end of the deal'? If it means (say) paying taxes, then you are only one illness away from not 'upholding their end of the deal'.
So no; your family and friends are *not* different. He means them.

There may be a 'significant slice of public opinion' that thinks that, but that's because they're being told that all the ills of the country are down to immigration. Which is a lie. And I'd strongly argue that there's a far more significant slice of public opinion that differs from their view. The Farage Party and its dropouts are starting to say the quiet part loudly.Corollary: whilst stemming/stopping the boats is necessary, it won't be sufficient to placate a significant slice of public opinion. Can you imagine what would happen to public services if all immigrants 'went home'. (*) Mind you, the destruction of public services is a wet dream to the low-tax millionaires who run the Farage Party. It's probably not a wet dream to many Reform voters, who rely on those public services...
(*) Which is an immense number, and even bigger if you count the 'White British' shite.

That’s the one. Not very good - too one sided and not hugely insightful. This Two and Twenty? https://www.amazon.com/Two-Twenty-Masters-Private-Equity/dp/0593239598
That’s next on my list after Two and Twenty. I’ll give feedback
I’m halfway through and all I’ve learnt is that PE executives are amazing, the brightest of the bright, really hard working and have the uncanny ability to take a completely dispassionate perspective on long term investment.

A funny old day, yesterday. What happened to the emergency debate on Mandelson? A slow-burning fuse or a damp squib?

With respect to my earlier comments on the integration of religion and politics in Maga, here's a good illustration from Charlie Kirk - a one minute video clip from a speech he made on August 10th 2025.

I'll trace where the language (eg "The Spiritual Battle", "Christendom" in usage in 2025 of the USA) comes from another time, but I guess not many PBers are familiar with C Peter Wagner and the New Apostolic Reformation. The "Seven Mountain Mandate" may be more familiar to some.

Still can't believe we had an opinion poll today/yesterday putting Labour on 14% in Wales.I can't believe some PBers were unfamiliar with the ‘perverted science’ description of fascism when Winston Churchill used it in one of the most famous speeches in British and indeed world history.
What General Weygand has called the Battle of France is over. I expect the Battle of Britain is about to begin. Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilisation. Upon it depends our own British life, and the long continuity of our institutions and our Empire. The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned on us. Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this island or lose the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be freed and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands. But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, "This was their finest hour."

The potenitally saving grace is that it's a temporary thing for this individual, not a failure of the entire concept.Everyone knows I’m very liberal but the decision looks ridiculous. The judge has now given a green light to others to do the same .The judges decision looks strange and will just open up more appeals . The Eritrean man admitted earlier he was not the subject of exploitation and was paid for his work in Libya . That should have been the end of it .Nobody is shocked by these decisions anymore.
Mr Justice Sheldon said the man's lawyers must do all that is possible to make further representations within 14 days, so that his case can be finalised at a future hearing.
