I remember when Tommeh brought his scumbag EDL to my city. Much of it shut down and closed early, and I was on call. I wandered into town to see it for myself. There was a small Unite Against Facism counter demonstration.

It was a weird and threatening atmosphere as the EDL broke through into the sidestreets and rampaged through the city chanting racist slogans and intimidating the few people out on the streets, banging on the windows of shops with people trapped inside. Fortunately there were few casualties.

Genuine question, why did it make you embarrassed to be British? This sort of shit, and often worse, happens all over the world, in France, Germany, Sweden, the crazy activities in the US.

Do we have some inherent moral make up that makes us “better” than foreigners so that we alone should not have far right violent people in our population?

I would get you being embarrassed to be a human but don’t get why you should feel embarrassed to be British, especially how on the large scale of things we are at the top of the table for inclusivity by surveys on that sort of thing.

Weird bit of whataboutery. When I cycle along and see all the litter in the verges it makes me feel embarrassed to be Scottish, even though the issue is significantly worse in India. It's to do with a sense of national pride, particularly when it trashes somewhere like the Highlands. We're supposed to be better than this.

In this case it's exacerbated by the fact they wrap themselves in the Union Flag.

Bad enough in this country. I remember being in Magaluf. It was like going to a zoo without bars. And looking at the violent tattooed drunks aggressively staggering around the streets made me feel equally ashamed.
