Re: Clive Lewis once called Wes Streeting a jumped up turd, it appears things haven't improved
What I like about the Bakerloo line is that it’s a testament to a great British tradition of journalism coming up with amusing neologisms (see also “pingdemic”). The newspapers invented, or at least popularised, “Bakerloo” and eventually the operators just came around and officially adopted it.All names of lines rapidly just become names of lines. That is, they just become abstract signifiers. No-one travels on the Jubilee line reminiscing on the 1977 jubilee.Luckily the Lioness Line is not a mobile Longleat Safari Park and so any fears of being hunted and eaten by a hungry big cat are unnecessary. As a country bumpkin these days (well, living well west of Ealing Broadway which, as we all know, is the western edge of civilisation) I was intrigued to travel to London today.I wonder where you were heading. Perhaps it would have been a good opportunity to take the wonderful Elizabeth Line, a marvel of modern British engineering excellence and an example of what all our infrastructure could look like if the good people at the Treasury weren't such penny pinching twats. Although just as the circle line is not a circle, you may have been disgusted to have discovered that the Elizabeth Line bears little resemblance to our late departed and much missed sovereign.
Would it be the urban wasteland so decried by @Leon (late and very occasionally lamented of this parish) and his acolytes on here?
All was going well; Paddington is truly a masterpiece of Victorian engineering that I never properly noticed when going through it more regularly. But then I hit the circle line at Paddington (rookie error, obviously the H+C line was the better call).
IT'S NO LONGER A LOOP! Being a maths teacher, it was offensive enough that it was named the circle line when it actually connected up. Now? The sooner Putin nukes the whole city, the better.
What's even worse, you common-sense warriors blather on here about renaming the Suffragette line or some other wiffle waffle, but no-one ever speaks up for the poor yellow line. It's on a level with those who blather on about the little disagreement going on in Gaza right now without mentioning South Sudan or Boko Haram. Worse, probably.
If we are going to tolerate this monstrosity, we could at least rename it the spiral line.
Yours,

And as far as I know London branches of Gail’s also are equipped with their own facilities and so the chances of finding one of their staff squatting in the corner of a carriage on the Bakerloo line are also slim.
I was thus disappointed that what became the Suffragette line wasn’t called the Goblin line.

Thank you @Cyclefree - I hope all is well with you.At least you are building a house - how is that going BTW? - which is more than can be said for this government. Why the hell does anyone want to succeed Starmer - and inherit the economic wasteland he oversees?Well here's the thing. Most of us on PB think we could do better don't we? I know I do.
2-3 years as PM to turn this round and establish Pointernomics as the pattern for the next 30 years, then back to retirement with occasional ex-PM jollies and a nice extra pension. Yep, that would be acceptable.
Now, I must get back to waiting for that call...
The house is going pretty well thanks, we've reached the interior fit-out now: floor tiling, bathrooms, electrics, kitchen, internal doors, etc...
We're hoping to be in by early spring. Then the fun begins with the landscaping - quite of lot of work required to convert a building site into a garden 😱 - but we do already have some trees in:
More here for anyone who is interested.

Please, please can Starmer show some leadership and be the first to stand up publicly against Trump's proposals.
Sometimes in leadership you need to take risks. Standing up to Trump on a point of incredibly important principle is a risk of sorts, but one that exposes opponents to the stance more than it would him politically.
We cannot let Ukraine capitulate to Russian or Trumpian demands.

Keith Kellogg, the most pro-Ukraine member of the Trump administration, is leaving his post in January. That's not a great sign and reflects the extent to which he's been sidelined in favour of pro-Russian Witkoff. The US has stopped funding Ukraine.
It's already made clear that European NATO is likely on its own in the face of a Russian attack.
The Trump administration is now massively unpopular with its own electorate.
Why now should we be paying quite so much attention to what they want in Ukraine ?

The French would surrender. What do you think would happen if Russia launched 4 dozen cruise missiles at Britain? The same Russia that cannot beat Ukraine? I don’t want to seem caomplacent but I’m fairly sure NATO-USA would be ok vs the paper tiger.Keith Kellogg, the most pro-Ukraine member of the Trump administration, is leaving his post in January. If you force Ukraine to fight with one arm tied behind its back then they will lose. If you don't want Ukraine to lose then you have to help them hit Russia where it hurts, and where it's most effective. We shouldn't be targeting targets inside Russia anyway, arms should be provided to Zelensky to maintain current linesOn Ukraine, I presume order of events is this. One potential problem is that Europe is reliant on the US for a lot of critical defense technology. For example, the storm shadow/scalp-eg missiles contain US components, so we required US permission for Ukraine to use them to strike targets inside Russia. If there's an acrimonious parting of the ways with the US then Europe is seriously fucked in the short term. Now, maybe Trump would be happy to keep selling stuff to Europe, but this means that Europe finds itself in a weak strategic position with lots of bad choices.
Trump sends his demand to the UK and other members of NATO, as well as the EU. He tells them that unless they back it, the US will leave NATO (which Trump has always wanted to do).
The ball is then in Europe's court.
Europe can afford to tell the US to fuck off. They can also point out to the adminisrtation that it is US arms manufacturers who would pay the highest price for the disentegration of NATO.
I don't know what Europe will do. Hungary supports Russia, of course.
Poland and the Baltics are the most hawkish.
The rest of Europe ... well, we'll see. Europe has the ability to ensure Russia's defeat. But so long have they been prepared to hide behind the US's coattails, that they do not seem willing to confront the new reality.
They also know that Trump could well impose another round of tariffs on Europe if they fail to fall into lin.
I hope that the leaders of Europe - Mertz, Macron, Starmer and Meloni - have the balls to stand up and do what is not just right, but what is long term the one with the most positive outcome. The problem is that they want to be reelected. And their economies are already creaking.
We need someone in Europe with balls and vision and strength. Will that person arise, or will Europe fold?
We need to keep Trump onside as much as possible, for as long as possible, and then use that time to prepare to be able to survive a rupture. But not at the cost of abandoning Ukraine.
It's a truly awful position to be in. Things are going to get worse before they get better.

@BarakRavidNeither NATO nor Ukraine would accept that unless modified to be on current lines of occupation
🚨SCOOP: The new Trump plan to end the war in Ukraine would grant Russia parts of eastern Ukraine it does not currently control, in exchange for a U.S. security guarantee for Ukraine and Europe against future Russian aggression.

I hope all party leaders are as sound.
Trump is conspiring with Putin to sell out Ukraine – and the security of the whole of Europe along with it.
The Prime Minister must convene the Coalition of the Willing to stop this betrayal in its tracks.
