We have a housing shortage in the UK, and have done for many years. Certainly since before the accession countries joined the EU. The failure has been in successive governments not building enough houses, then and now. Nige is using immigrants as a scapegoat. So yes, I'll go with the ad hominem. Happy to. -

I have a case at the moment that touches on this and will involve a High Court case (I am only on the civil side). Nothing political about it but it involves the purchase under value of houses threatened with repossession, essentially for enough money to get the lender off the owner's back. They are then offered a tenancy… -

Re: politicalbetting.com » Blog Archive » Flotsam and jetsam. Britain’s quiet coastal disaster
In the case of the south east, there has been a major resurgence in seaside towns. This is based on people relocating from London. Some towns have benefitted more than others. Margate, Deal, Folkestone, Hastings, Ramsgate, Eastbourne have certainly benefitted, as have their more affluent rural hinterlands. All of these… -

In general LHA is so far below rent costs in the PRS that even significantly reduced rents would hardly impact. LHA are linked to the 30th market percentile for the type of dwelling (ie One bedroom for a couple, Two bedrooms for a couple with 2 children under 10 etc), and have always been subject to the bedroom tax, and… -

If wrapping himself in the Union Flag is the best that Starmer has to offer we might as well buckle up for a long, hard clown-car ride from Johnson. If I was Starmer I would work on the premise that Scotland and Northern Ireland are lost. If that happens, Wales won't want to be outdone too, so sometime later off we go. So… -
Re: politicalbetting.com » Blog Archive » David Herson: Elect in haste; repent at leisure
"Property is an excellent thing to tax because it is simple to do so and is a good proxy for income." It might be easy to tax but there is no general correlation between the value of a piece of property and the income of its owner. Suppose a person buys a house and lives in it for twenty odd years, the value of the house… -
Re: politicalbetting.com » Blog Archive » Happy tenth anniversary David
Damnit, I was hoping he would appoint 600 new Tory peers (hint, hint Dave) David Cameron has been secretly drawing up a plan to bypass an increasingly hostile anti-Tory majority in the House of Lords, which is threatening to wreak havoc with his legislative plans. The UK prime minister will use the recent bust-up with the… -

Could the Speaker cancel the Budget? MPs are suspicious that Lindsay Hoyle is up to something Lindsay Hoyle is, to put it mildly, on the warpath. The Speaker is now giving almost daily statements in which he complains about the government's habit of making announcements to the media rather than in parliament. Last week he… -

I pay disbursements as swiftly as I can. But, sometimes, it takes me a while to get paid. If, say, there's a dispute over a will, and the only asset of the estate is a house, and the client doesn't have much money, neither the solicitor nor counsel will get paid until an agreement is reached, and the house has been sold. -
Re: politicalbetting.com » Blog Archive » General Election 2019 : The PB Guide to Election Night
Two personal anecdotes (NW safeish blue constituency). On my road there have been 4 houses with placards outside the house. 2 with Labour (1 with a giant Unite flag too) and 2 Tory. Today there's just 2 Labour. One house which had Tory placards has a Tory poster on what I presume is the bedroom window but it looks like the… -

Re: politicalbetting.com » Blog Archive » Team Corbyn say Jez will carry on if the confidence motion
He won't. The Speaker calls MPs by name (except for government ministers). As I understand it, the House does not recognise organisations that exist outside the House, which makes sense as the government exists - for example - as long as it has the confidence of MPs (or as long as it isn't shown not to have it). What the… -

It's all illegal, but the Republican Party in Congress is a mushroom farm. I’ve never been either. Am now in a 3-way mix between spending time in our house in France, visiting places with the children that I know they will enjoy, before they’re too old (Paris next month, Morocco in October), doing bits of tourism on the back of work trips, and going on random jaunts with my country-collecting…
