Re: politicalbetting.com » Blog Archive » Reflections from Cyclefree: Here We Go (Again)
Late afternoon all :) Thank you for the piece, Cyclefree. This is not 1979, nor is it even 1982. The circumstances were quite different. As I said this morning, I'm far from certain where the country now goes. It's not Stunde Null - we haven't been militarily defeated or physically conquered as were Germany, Italy, France… -

I’m not the most knowledgeable armchair general on PB (if I was a general I’d be known for falling off the horse on parade) so please correct me where wrong. But I think our media have been misleading us a bit on how badly this is going for Russia, because The whole Map they keep showing with zilch movement on it doesn’t… -

Antifrank [9.46am] All of us are the same boat, old bean. And, for example, in a discussion about housing our personal circumstances do have a degree of relevance. More generally, those who feel abused can always leave the site. But what is fair? Was it fair of me to go through university on an industrial scholarship which… -

I remember the Ugandan Asian cause being taken up enthusiastically by the upper middle classes. Many a country house had its spare bedrooms redecorated in anticipation of their imminent arrival. Although the goodwill persisted I can't remember any of these rooms being filled. It was if the last blast of empire builders had… -

Go back seven weeks and tell Conservatives they'd lose their majority from a 20 point lead and they either ask what care in the community project you were in or that the Messiah has endorsed Jezza .... or probably both." Don't forget that the greatest the proportion of retired people, the harder it is for GDP per head to grow rapidly, as they will have zero (or very little) economic output. So if every worker increases their output by 4% and, and workers are 75% of the population, that's a 3% growth in GDP per capita. But if the proportion… -

I really do hope that Mr. Dancer, gent of this parish and who, is by his own admission, as poor as a church mouse whose wife has sued for divorce (and pissed off with all the cheese) the day after he received an enormous tax bill, didn't follow his instincts and put some money down on the remain outcome he has been… -

Given that I would envisage this being primarily about decisions like going to war, I see little to no harm in gridlock. I would prefer that five people have to be convinced to send in the Navy, rather than a cowed PM who has just been on the receiving end of a tongue lashing from the White House. Indeed I think it gives… -

BBC: Why should broadband be taxed so there can be a nationalised dancing contest on telly every Saturday night? What’s liberal about that? First, the average asylum seeker is no more capable of being a head chef than is the average Briton. Pot-rattling is a skilled trade, especially at head chef level, even in a gastropub. And watch the current series of Masterchef: The Professionals to see that many chefs (and waiters and so on) had to leave their jobs… -

How about when we know the facts about his attacker? And what led to the attack? I was not one of those who rushed to say anything about the reasons for Jo Cox's murder. And when the Norway massacre happened and one of our well-known posters immediately assumed it was an Islamist attack I was one of the few to say it would… -

Mostly sounds good but why stop at 1M?! When Macmillan was Housing Minister, 60 years ago, the UK built almost 300-500k homes per year. I disagree with removing the triple lock because over 65s only on the basic pension are very poor. It was left to wither away by Thatcher and has only slowly been recovering its value in… -

I am not a big fan of South African wines, but that sounds interesting. I do like a Southern Rhone, and generally blended reds are better than single varietals, excluding pinot noir perhaps. The Birstall byelection sounds interesting. It is a northern suburb of Leicester, not as posh as Quorn or Rothley, but more upmarket…
