Derby fire deaths: Philpott children remembered a year on Six children killed by a house fire in Derby will be remembered in a church service and at a community event later. Mick and Mairead Philpott, the parents of the children, were jailed last month for manslaughter, together with their friend Paul Mosley. Six white… -

I don't think we can take figures from London as being representative for the simple reason that throughout London seems to have been protected because of its relative prosperity from the worst ravages of the 'Great Recession'. Furthermore, London more than any other region benefitted from additional PESA spending during… -
Re: The Boris vaccination poll “bounce” will evaporate unless those who’ve had both jabs start to see so
I'm not expecting inflation to be "out of control" (I'm certainly not talking mid-70s levels) but if you think about it, it's been nearly 30 years since anyone cared about inflation or interest rates. Culturally, a whole generation (or two) has grown up not worrying about mortgage rates and living to a means where paying… -

I suspect it's because so many people have been holding off on reassessing royalty and the monarchy as an institution till after the late Queen died. But her long life - happy and beloved as that was - meant that the question accumulated, so to speak. We're now in an era when historians are more openly discussing the… -

A shout out for the NHS. Yesterday I had an operation on my mouth at UCL hospital. I had an infection under one of my teeth. To be honest it has been there for decades and hasn't caused me a problem so I was doubtful about having the op, but they looked at it when I was having a perforated tooth sorted (through my local… -

This is the sort of thing I mentioned below. The column was first reported yesterday at a shorter length, and we're still talking about it, as if has been static all this time. It could be anywhere now (well, say 12 hours driving at 30 MPH to maintain a column means 360 miles. These figures have been plucked out of my… -

Also, on the LDs, I was talking to my non-political daughter last night, and Ed Davey's embarrassing Dad routine has definitely cut through (favourably) amongst her age group (first time voters). We then spent half an hour looking at the various political TikToks. Labour's are very slick, LDs a mixed bunch, and as for the… -

Porridge every morning has been one of my main changes in last year or so. Keeps you full for hours. Also really cutting down on pasta, bread, potato (all of which I love - so been hard). I would rather eat carbs than sweet stuff so I've not had an issue cutting out the biscuits, cakes, desserts etc. -

A trans woman writes: Something dramatic happened in the House of Commons yesterday [1 March 2021]: Penny Mordaunt told MPs that ‘transmen are men and transwomen are women’. This mantra – for that is what it is – has been said so often in recent years that it might now be an unremarkable way in which to wind up a debate.… -

AA Gill skewers C4 "But it does raise a question that’s been bothering Tristrams for some time: what is the point of Channel 4? It has lost its role of being the smart young modern vision of high-low culture and turned into a car-boot sale of second-hand ideas and really unpleasant victim trolling. Its early-evening… -

Sounds good. I will drive and see. A cold cold winter on the Suffolk Coast. A woman and a precognitive child, stuck in a house, an academic husband away working in Cambridge. Freezing mist off the sea. Ooooh. It's getting there. This precogitive/cosmic habituation thing has just cherried the whole thing, tied it all neatly… -

Catching up with some of the business news today, Japan is still stuck in the dark ages of business. I've been informed that the state is going to bail out Sharp and a higher offer from Terry Gou (Foxconn) is set to be rejected in order to protect Japanese assets and jobs. Every time there is some good news (Sony) the… -

I've been thinking: either way you look at it, we're in a position where we're looking at DevoMax or Scottish independence around the corner. If it does turn out to be the former, goodness knows how they're going to get round the WLQ. The problem with EV4EL is that you've got the chance of a government being formed which… -

My mistake, I thought he did. Thanks for putting me right. Wherever and whenever he lived, he clearly has no connection with the constituency now, and in my view that is completely wrong. Ed Balls may just have given a vivid demonstration of what happens to candidates parachuted into officially 'safe' seats to which they…
