Re: Is there a face-saving way Johnson can step aside? – politicalbetting.com
Afternoon all :) While the Queen will have to endure Ed Chamberlin and the ITV Racing coverage (unless she has Racing UK which won't be any better) I imagine a huge crowd has descended on the Downs for the small matter of the Derby. Big field but there's not many with obvious chances. DESERT CROWN was impressive in the… -
Re: Is the regent about to become the monarch? – politicalbetting.com
I have limited sympathy for those people on variable or short rate deals. Particularly those who would have wondered what on earth I was doing fixing for 10 years (now 5.5 years left at 2.49%) and paying a higher rate as a result. The answer to why is very clear to them now. House price inflation has been driven by people… -
Re: I can’t even – politicalbetting.com
Sure, all that is true but the age group that has been hardest hit in recent times is under 40s. They are being royally shafted on housing in particular. With the government almost silent on them, and the media scathing of their concerns with silly memes about avocados and iphones, expect some hostility back even if it is… -

I note that Earl Baldwin of Bewdley retired from the House of Lords (too much Brexit probably) earlier this week. As he was an elected hereditary crossbencher there will be a by-election to replace him. The electorate will be the current 31 hereditary crossbenchers. No date has been announced for this by-election. -

*Rolls eyes* At current rate of progress, it would take at least another 20 years for the Conservatives to build a simple majority in the Upper House. In any event, it has categorically not been "just restuffed... with a Tory majority" as you previously claimed. That's demonstrably, factually wrong. -

Re: Christening a new party – politicalbetting.com
What do you mean by "left wing" and "left wing politics"? Do you mean the current Labour in Government ie Starmer, Blue Labour (ie socially conservative), something more like Tony Benn post his conversion, or one of the more exotic varieties such as the Fruit and Nut Party, the SWP or TUSC? Those last 3 to me are "I'm not… -
Re: politicalbetting.com » Blog Archive » Tomas Forsey puts Thursday’s result into context
I notice Labour / left learning media are making the same mistakes they did when Boris became Mayor and when we had the coalition in 2010. They keep screaming that he will trash the country, persecute the immigrants, destroy all the institutions, it will all be total chaos, before any policy has been announced. They kept… -

The maximum capacity of the UK private sector construction industry is probably around 250,000 dwellings per annum. In the 1950s and 1960s local government construction peaked at 150,000 per annum, but since 1997 virtually no council dwellings have been built. In the first two years of the Coalition government more council… -

Re: Three years is a long time in politics – politicalbetting.com
I'm sorry, I'm really not being provocative, but what has that got to do with it ? When my parents were in their eighties a few years back now they were not as you would describe it as "in work". That doesn't mean they could have got to hospital by some imaginary public transport. No taxi could have got to their house,… -

I've been reading today, amongst other things, about further pleas (this time from senior Tory backbenchers and the head of the CBI) for office workers to start commuting again and rescue all the city centre businesses that exist to serve them. I think you have to feel very sorry for the business owners and their… -
Re: So can Truss turn this round for the Tories – politicalbetting.com
It's not an account of Putin's mind. It's a poll of the population. Assuming the poll has reasonable validity, it's interesting that the percentage who perceive Ukraine as among the most unfriendly countries has fallen from 53% to 43% since 2019. First principles suggest that the Chinese elite would welcome a war between… -
