Problem: This claims to have a 'belief'. It doesn't seem to have worked out from all its research that 'beliefs' belong to sentience and consciousness. On standard models of AI it is no more capable of a belief than a book is. -

How is it not logical? The biggest threat to the first AI that comes along that had such a capacity is that mankind might, left to our own devices, either invent some form of better AI that would consign that first model to the scrap heap, or belatedly put in safeguards to limit its power. I don't know his current thinking. I agree that he might feel that for the reasons you say, but for age reasons it's probably now or never, and I think he may fancy being a lefty gadfly. He won't want to undermine the general effort, though, so may give it a pass. -
