Argentine newspaper praises ‘polite and respectful’ players in remarkable claims

National publication writes that La Albiceleste ‘lost with heads held high’ despite ungainly scenes after World Cup final defeat by Spain

Argentina’s press has praised its national team’s behaviour during and after Sunday’s World Cup final defeat by Spain, despite international condemnation.

Clarín, Argentina’s leading newspaper, described La Albiceleste as having been “polite and respectful, despite a few unfortunate isolated incidents in the last match”.

“On the field and off, the Argentine team displayed a range of values that are hard to find these days,” Silvia Fesquet, Clarín’s editor, gushed, adding that the players “did not speak ill of their rivals or try to justify their mistakes by blaming others”.

Clarín’s rival, La Nación, also praised the Argentine players’ dignity in defeat.

“The team obtained the most difficult thing: the affection and recognition of the people, even without being champions,” ran the headline of La Nación’s main report on the final.

Joseph Gobbels would be proud at that level of propaganda. Nearly as bad as when North Korea got to the world cup and they showed the editted games where North Korea didn't lose any matches.

Andy B tells reporters he's thinking about rent freezes.

    Dear God...

Sounds like a good idea to me. Aside from helping the poorest it saves the exchequer quite a bit in future housing benefit.
Price-fixing in markets is rarely a good idea.

Now, given that the housing market has been a failed market for some time, freezing rents might make sense as an interim measure as a plan for a massive intervention in the market takes shape - such as council house-building ramping up to >100k a year. But 100k houses a year is going to cost big money.
I’d be interested to see how rent freezes would work. If they were such a resounding success everyone would be doing it.

Presumably landlords costs wouldn’t be frozen ?

Still, kicking landlords is never going to go down badly with the voters.
"Presumably landlords costs wouldn’t be frozen ?"

    No they are not.

If for no other reason than the government has stuff in the pipeline already to add to them e.g. a new national database of all landlords which landlords will have to register with and pay a fee for.

Again, a sensible policy that helps hold landlords to account. If you know the address you can look me up and complain directly to me or via the council - something that saved me thousands when there was a leak from a flat above.

Manchester United have signed teenage winger Tynan Thompson from Tottenham in a deal that could be worth £8m. The 18-year-old England youth international scored 13 goals and contributed six assists last season across Under-18 to Under-21 level.

Do we think transfer fees might have got a bit out of hand? £8m for a teenager who hasn't even got into the first team yet.

If you restrict the price of anything long enough you will create a shortage. Doesn’t matter if it’s toilet rolls in Venezuela or rental properties in Nuneaton.
I think the problem isn’t renting an empty property it’s increasing the rent by 20-30% to get the current tenants out
Well it’s how that word “freeze” is defined. A straightforward “freeze” ie zero rent increase whilst there is no compensation for rising landlord costs is a formula for a steady but inexorable decline in the number of rental properties, as the real rate of return is going to deteriorate by whatever inflation is year by year. It’s just maths.

A “freeze” which has permissions to increase in certain circumstances etc etc will lessen all that to an extent.

Prisons minister Lord Timpson quits government
    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cvg0xlrvv4mo

So that is all of Starmer's "big" outside signing gone. Again, really weird, there is absolutely no doubt Timpson really believes in his cause, the whole Timpson family are extremely good people, he has built a very successful but ethical business and it seems like he got eaten by the blob or something.

That is genuinely sad, he was looking at the bigger picture.
"His statement did not give a specific reason for resigning, but it is understood he feels he has done as much as he can in the role."

That was also the role given to Vallance, but again it seems like trying to unlock the levers of government too hard to drive change.
That could be because he won't be allowed to do what he had planned under the new regime rather than he's done as much as he could.

Not a great start for Burnham on PB. Not exactly knocking it out of the park on Britain's foremost political blog.

I approve of all his sacking

    Key now is COE
    “Key now is COE.”

Can you say why it is, or will you let me define it for everyone?

So COE is important to you Big G, because Red Ed was the only Labour person coming into government with a plan - that was to implement the Conservative Party Net Zero Plans and policy.

As Kemi’s leading cheerleader on PB, you concede she must respond to change, and get the response right?

For example - does Kemi Badenoch now need to more clearly spell out how she will open up the North Sea, just as Farage has done? When Labour have no new drilling, then “opening up the North Sea to lower British energy bills” is pushing against an open door, with spin without even having much detail or policy. However what Labour will do now is token “opening up the North Sea” on just 2 licenses stuck in legal limbo, and they will call this the “sensible, pragmatic mixed approach for Britain.” Does this shoot dead the fox Kemi’s has set running? In response does Kemi now urgently need to explain exactly how she will go further - redefine that difference - so Labour does not appear on the same page she is - otherwise she will surrender the clear blue water she built up on this?
Kemi will do fine and even better if she ignores your rants
But I am right here arn’t I? Politics is more battle of spin and perceptions than actual policy. Badenoch was benefiting from a help on energy bills from drilling of North Sea Labour wouldn’t do. She loses that now, unless she gets the response right. What do you suggest the response should be?
She will get the response right by supporting Burnham where she agrees and taking him on where she doesn’t

On this she will support him whilst he will have problems from some behind him and the greens
You are suggesting a shift in tone, at least initially? If so, I agree. But do you have any example Kemi agreed and supported Starmer without caveats, on anything at all?

Yes, would be good politics if she could, but there’s zero evidence she can do “supporting Burnham where she agrees.”

Or even agree with any part of the last Manifesto she stood on? 😇

All Labour will do is drill North Sea with two old licenses stuck in legal limbo, and completely trump Badenoch with this, unless she redefines the difference there between the two parties.

This isn’t a situation where Conservative Party continues upward trajectory from here, Burnham can take voters from them as well, quite likely more voters from Conservative than Reform imo, if Kemi doesn’t get her tone and policy response to Burnham right.

Going back to the welfare cuts Kemi offered to work with Starmer and that remains her position to this day

It is, but it isn't in some respects. Footballers earning £5m-10m-15m is an incredible amount of money but the business is a massive global enterprise and plenty of less global sports pay the top players this amount. Where it is really bonkers now is that 16-18 year olds are on really really big money, where as it used to be you on are £50 a week and lodging with a family, then your first contract is nothing special, only then, when you are established at the top level does that big money come.

You hear loads of the greats from the early years of EPL say they got in Man Utd or Liverpool first team and they were literally on a bag of crisps and a can of coke level wages not being able to afford anything more than a clapped out polo for a motor*. It was only 4-5 years later they got the big money.

Now there are kids who are "pros" from 16 to 21 and earn enough to be financial independent for the rest of their lives without ever getting becoming a first teamer.

    * I actually bumped into Danny Murphy at a petrol when he had just signed for Liverpool for several million and he was driving a clapped out VW.

Markets have noticed the words of the PM to journalists this afternoon re “flexibilities” on fiscal rules… 10y gilt yield back up above 5%, flat elsewhere in Europe. my understanding that it refers to the financial transactions flexibilities used by the new debt measure, as used by the energy department in some green initiatives, not say, a decrease in headroom. He firmly committed to existing fiscal rules.

Still this is a sensitive time, currently without Chancellor. Interesting optics for the PM (officially First Lord of the Treasury) to be talking in a way that could impact markets.

Remarkable how the Sun has the next Budget when nobody else knows the CofE.

I thought Burnham would be more conciliatory towards Starmer loyalists but he's obviously decided he can afford to stick two fingers up at them.

Quite amusing that Burnham's sackings are being widely well received on here.

I am not sure that's going to last through the appointments!

If it's Mano a Mano between Mahmood and Miliband there can only be one winner and it isn't Miliband.

The whole financial basis of football is stark, staring bonkers.

I think it's that Burnham doesn't have any obligations to the previous cabinet and can put his own people in. Even more than Johnson, who didn't keep on a lot of the May appointees.

See it more as a replacement by another team than personal sackings.
