The official opposition in Scotland is doing worse than Labour.

Reform taking them both to the cleaners.

    Hannah Hampton
    Chloe Kelly
    A womens rugby player
    Luke Littler

    Lando Norris

Hampton won’t win it, but would be very funny if she did.

Considering the (at best lacklustre) performance and scandals involving recent SNP governments over the years it really is a little surprising that they are cruising to victory.

Then you look at the alternatives and see why.

Reform supporters in Scotland are the pure racist dregs, not even the blood and soil nationalists you might get in England.

I don’t wish to alarm you all but Sir Grant Shapps speaks sense.

I see that Coburn is taking refuge via the Auld Alliance, and also getting questions in the Nathan Gill style. Is he still the King over the water? Or does Farage have another minion in charge of his party in Scotland?

This I am afraid is the wrong take on this poll. The main take is surely the SNP collapsing to 12% below their 2021 constituency Holyrood vote with Labour only down 5%, giving a 3.5% swing to Labour since 2021.

Reform also up to 18% on the regional list so slim chance of first unionist majority since 2011 if unionists vote tactically on the constituency vote. Indeed Scotland may have a swing to Labour next year at Holyrood, despite swings from Labour in England and Wales in the local and Senedd elections there which might be enough to save Sir Keir's job

Newly turncoated Baron Offord may be pencilled in for North British Gauleiter. Where they put him on the list for the May election will tell us a lot.
Glasgow councillor Thomas Kerr was jockeying for the position so his nose may be out of joint.

Don't Palantir have access to most of it anyway? More likely, it's a fishing operation by the US Government, giving them the opportunity to make life very unpleasant for visitors they don't like.

The two things are not necessarily alternatives.

I'm pretty certain that if the immigration agents decide to harass you, which is hardly unknown, the information will be readily available.

It's not inconceivable that the Palantir types get involved in automating such harassment.

Interesting polling. It shows how Brexit continues to pay dividends for the right by causing a declining cost of living and reducing opportunities it has created discontent that it can exploit.
The right has no solutions to the country's olls in large part because it needs them, a happy, contented electorate doesn't vote for dog whistle divisive politicians.

So, ending final salary is basically hitting today's tax payers.

Hang on, a couple of weeks ago the Telegraph were calling for her to resign because she put taxes up when she had the headroom to leave them alone, whereas this week she hasn't been tough enough and should have done more to control the debt. Just perhaps, much of the press loves to find fault with whatever a Labour chancellor does.

Looks like all those people suggesting asylum seekers should be housed on military camps will have to rapidly delete their previous tweets on the matter, now that local people are protesting against such plans advanced by the government to house asylum seekers somewhere other than in hotels.

The key to this is fast processing, get 90% done within a month and then where they are housed will matter far less.

Littler is the only person there who turned his sport upside down by his talent.
It’s a pub game, so not a real sport.
A badly thrown dart could take someone’s eye out - that makes it a sport
Philosophically why is javelin a sport and darts not?
    Physical exertion.

It is a boring debate though. Darts is a recreational sport not a physical sport, we all know that, so it just depends on our own internal preferred definition of the word sport, rather than anything objective.

    Factoid of the day:

According to modelling by the Office for Budget Responsibility, the retreat by UK pension funds from the gilts market might alone be pushing up debt servicing costs by as much as 0.8 percentage points.

    Telegraph

So, ending final salary is basically hitting today's tax payers.

Hang on, a couple of weeks ago the Telegraph were calling for her to resign because she put taxes up when she had the headroom to leave them alone, whereas this week she hasn't been tough enough and should have done more to control the debt. Just perhaps, much of the press loves to find fault with whatever a Labour chancellor does.
She is a clown who is well beyond her depth, one can only hope she is turfed out before we are totally down the drain.
Very good to see pubs are starting to ban Labour MP clowns from their premises, perhaps it will jog their odd brain cell.

I don't think she is very good.
I also think the Telegraph criticism would be there whatever she does, and they are shameless in attacking her for both the fiscal gap being too small and being too big within a couple of weeks.

@HYUFD has this great fear of Scottish Independence so much so that he interprets Scottish polls on a Unionist Holyrood majority

However, I think it more likely Holyrood 26 will see the greens propping up a SNP Government with a majority Independence coalition

Why not name Ellie Kildunne? Is it some implication she's obscure? I'd say she's the most memorablr and identifiable on the list.
Yeah, I don’t think she should be on the list. Rugby is a tricky game to make competitive in the first place never mind for women.

Womens football is fairer to be included, in my opinion.

But Rory should win no question.

For some reason HYUFD isn't commenting on the confirmation of a continuing lead for Yes as is noted in this commentary which makes a point about IPSOS methodology.

(ETA Strictly is priced up as a 2-horse race between Karen and George. I do not watch it myself.)

    Best SPotY prices are:-

    Rory McIlroy – Golf – 8/11
    Chloe Kelly – Football – 7/2
    Lando Norris – Formula 1 – 5/1

    Luke Littler – Darts – 33/1
    Hannah Hampton – Football – 50/1
    Ellie Kildunne – Rugby Union – 100/1

Chloe and Lando have been flip-flopping for some time.

Not far off what the commentary I posted just now says. But all rather tricky with so many parties. I do still wonder why the LDs aren't doing better. They seem to be stuck to the sheep or student farming areas. Their Scottish leader being seemingly so pro-car? Doesn't seem like enough [edit] of an explanation.

You are right - there has been an SNP collapse electorally. Whilst these polls show a smaller collapse at Holyrood than at Westminster, there is still a big drop in support.

As always the trend is your friend. The question remains what happens next - does it continue or is there swingback of the kind not seen in the Westminster election?

The SNP are banging the independence drum harder than ever. As a party they are penniless and they can hardly run on their record in government, so they have little else left. These polls show the way to another SNP / Green government, but I would be surprised. (1) that didn't work at all well for the SNP last time and (2) Swinney is saying that a vote for an independence party other than the SNP is a vote for the union.

Not necessarily: doesn't have to be an actual SNP/Green government, of course. Minority admin plus support on specific policies has been the norm [edit} or at least the modal model since 1997.

BTW why aren't the LDs doing better? I'd have expected some flight from the Tories and Labour at the very least, as well as from the SNP givenj their losses.

    Morning all :)

Well, that's it - I can officially announce my disengagement from the world has begun.

The first thing I read this morning is some nonsense about Calibri being considered a "woke" font while Times New Roman is a "manly authoritarian" font apparently. Seriously? The "Culture Wars" have crossed from stupidity to something else I can't define - when people complained about ads at Waterloo Station it was all good fun but now...well, who knows?

Then we get the list of SPOTY contenders - I've heard of McIlroy and Norris but that's about it. I don't watch women's football for the same reason I don't watch men's football anymore - I'd rather watch some other sport. Presumably they don't want anyone with "an issue" these days - they once had Frankie Dettori and he enjoyed some recreational drug taking so presumably Oisin Murphy's alcohol issues rule hime out but what about William Buick? He's just a nice chap - excellent backstory and a very good rider as he showed in Hong Kong on Wednesday.

It also seems the Monroe Doctrine is back - the precursor to the Brezhnev Doctrine. "Spheres of influence" - like footballs and rugby balls, I presume.

Hampton won’t win it, but would be very funny if she did.

Well the only reason it's tricky to make competitive is that England are very good! You could make the same argument about tennis when that Swiss fella was winning everything.
Normally I'd be wary about giving it to a back, because you have to know a bit more about the game to understand the value brought by the forwards (I would have given it to Martin Johnson rather than Johnny Wilkinson in 2003) but Ellie Kildunne is genuinely something special.

Fun times ahead. I shall join the fight in January...

Amazing that the SLDs aren't doing better under the wise and foresightful stewardship of Alex Cole-Hamala.

I take it you don't watch rugby either if you think a rugby ball is a sphere!

One of the footballers, I'd have thought, just due to numbers watching. Kelly has the 'nice girl' image, more than Hampton, so probably her.

Don't fancy those odds though. When I've bet on this I the past it's been repeatedly laying favourites just after they've won something. Olympic years particularly good for that

Yes. Although you then need to house those given refugee status and deport those refused.

Over 100m play tennis. About 3m play womens rugby.

Being the best individual out of 100m is more impressive than being the best player in the best team out of 3m.

Not really, they would mostly work and pay for their own housing, which they cant do for 2/3 years under the current system by which time they are also less likely to get back into work. Of course processing needs to include deportation.

I spent too much time in my younger years handling rugby balls and dealing with the infinite mysteries of what Bill MacLaren might have called "the darker recesses of the scrummage". As my moniker might suggest, I was either loose head prop or second row except when I captained my House fourth XV (usually only 8 or 9 at most) when I was scrum half, fly half and full back at the same time....happy days.

On the first point. Swinney is painting himself into a corner with "SNP majority vote for independence" which he won't get. But a minority government on his own terms is proof that independence isn't supported. So he will have to try and tap up the Greens.

On the second point, we're laser focused on specific areas. As we saw with the Westminster campaign that strategy underreads on support and thus seat predictions...

I genuinely believe that the west's disengagement from the US will continue to gather pace. Gilead has gone bye bye and unless there is a rift in the movement to stop the planned total seizure of power they aren't coming back.

But that's political disengagement. Culture - which is mostly unmolested by MAGA - continues to be global, as does finance.

One surprise is that the EU haven't created a European payments system. I literally cannot spend money in the UK without using a US financial system of some kind. All credit cards run on American systems. All bank cards to withdraw cash the same...

On that last point, I can't believe that the winner of the prestigious FIFA Peace Prize is talking like this.

Trump on the President of Colombia: He better wise up or he will be next. I hope he is listening, he will be next.

Hampton won’t win it, but would be very funny if she did.

    Why would it be funny?

Anyway, the full SPotY shortlist is gender-balanced but with two lady footballers so presumably not too much thought went into it.

    Chloe Kelly – Football
    Ellie Kildunne – Rugby Union
    Hannah Hampton – Football

    Lando Norris – Formula 1
    Luke Littler – Darts
    Rory McIlroy – Golf

Littler is the only person there who turned his sport upside down by his talent.
It’s a pub game, so not a real sport.
Can't see that it requires any less hand-eye co-ordination than say archery or golf?
Darts is more of a sport than F1 is.

    Couldn't agree more, Malc.

    Why isn't McTominay in it?
I agree Peter given the year he has had
Possible Scotland's footie boys could get the team award?
Certainly a miracle them winning their group for sure. Mctominey deserves it for that overhead goal alone.

At the risk of overstimulating Malc, I have to say that win over Denmark was epic.

Archery would be very much more of a sport if competitors were required to fire at each other, as they once were. That would also have the advantage of making it a sport at which we would be sure to beat the French.

Fun times ahead. I shall join the fight in January...

But that doesn't work for Holyrood under AMS. Indeed, given how the LDs aren't likely to win many constituency seats, it might be a better strategy to go for a much wider focus, at least at a regional level.

I see Trump peace prize proxy Machado has managed to smuggle herself out of Venezuela and will return to her secret location after picking up the bauble. It doesn't suggest that the Maduro police state is exactly firing on all cylinders.

I can't see US immihration being bothered to look at this stuff manually. It will all be via AI and largely a way for Palantir to farm information. Why else would they want all the details of your next of kin?
The two things are not necessarily alternatives.

I'm pretty certain that if the immigration agents decide to harass you, which is hardly unknown, the information will be readily available.

It's not inconceivable that the Palantir types get involved in automating such harassment.
I'm sure that levels of foreign talent visiting and moving to a country that engages in this sort of stupidity will never backfire on them.
Tourism will remain at record highs and............ oh wait. No it won't.

How do you win seats on the list? You pick up enough votes to clear the threshold. Campaigning hard in specific places to win those votes is more effective than a general regional campaign which gets missed by people being bombarded by messages from local candidates.

We're also continuing to focus on held and target seats at council level. Again, build support locally as they then tot up regionally.
