Given that I can't comment on the biggest story of the decade that everyone else is rightly talking about, I will just say how odd some of the Tory supporters red lines are. Their own party has already buckled on English votes for English laws, and they're not even in coalition negotiations yet! A similar story seems to be emerging with the immigration cap, which seems to be dropped from their campaign, despite being ranked 7.22 out of 10 by their own supporters.0

Ooh, I haven't posted here for a few years. Not that I was even faintly memorable anyway.
Labour, 14/1 for a majority. I hope it doesn't happen, but that's a price I can't let go.0 -
Not as ridiculous as getting lectured on sexual crimes by someone who goes to Thailand and who has in the past paid the local prostitutes.SeanT said:BTW, TSE, your list of news stories is a tad ridiculous, ignoring the totally dominant story of the day - trending in the top ten since noon, front page of the Times, leading C4 news, expected to lead BBC Ten news, etc - Rotherham.
You seem oddly... "isolated".... from the vital events of the moment.
But I've thought about this story many times, and it is something I can't comprehend, and I'm not sure I'll ever comprehend.0 -

Except that prostitution is legal in Thailand, isn't it? Therefore while we may disapprove, it's not a sexual crime. And it certainly isn't as bad as horrific actions that I'm not allowed to mention.TheScreamingEagles said:

I wonder when the race starts and Scotland realizes it's a two horse race and an extremely close one whether they'll be quite so cavalier with their votes. There are certain Tory trigger points that have capacity to make the Scots angry. It certainly can't be ruled out.0

Evening all and one thing those of you in the metropolitan south should get out of your heads. Scottish Tories will not be tactically voting to save any Labour MPs. We hate the Labour Party and the 50 years of damage it has done to civic Scotland. It will be very interesting to see if Jim Murphy decides in the next few weeks not to stand in East Renfrewshire.
I see there was lots of speculation about Tory success in Scotland in May. Frankly it depends on who the SNP takes votes from. It was YES leaning areas we saw in today's polls. Remember even when the SNP won a landslide in 2011, it couldn't oust the Tories across the South of Scotland, the region with by far the highest NO vote in September.0 -

Some forms of prostitution are theoretically illegal (cheap obvious brothels), some are theoretically legal (coyote dancers, escort bars). On top of that, it is nowhere illegal - AFAIK - to PAY a woman for sex, should you be so inclined, by gifting her money, or buying her fake champagne in a bar, or paying for a fabulous but surprisingly brisk dinner.
Disapprove of my (prior) lifestyle by all means, I often do it myself. But I do not believe, on this issue, that I have ever broken the law in Thailand - or elsewhere, for that matter.0 -
Sounds very similar to the legal position in Rotherham, and I suspect that the ways that the working girls were recruited not dissimilar either.SeanT said:

This was the phone poll I was talking about a few weeks ago
Nick Clegg could be the biggest casualty of the general election, with a poll showing he risks losing his seat to Labour.
The exclusive survey put Labour 10 points ahead of the Deputy PM in his Sheffield Hallam constituency.
And a separate poll found fellow Lib Dem MP Danny Alexander could lose his Scottish constituency.
The Survation survey for the Unite union put Labour on 33%, Lib Dems on 23%, Tories on 22%, Greens on 12% and UKIP on 9%.

Most prostitues in England do not start underage - the study that said that only surveilled prostitutes that were underage anyway. It's like doing a study of mortality rates for under 18's - you might find it's 15 but it would be ridiculous to then assert the average life expectancy for everyone is 15.foxinsoxuk said:

Read the article that I linked to. All users of prostitutes like to justify themselves that the girls are acting voluntarily (indeed in Rotherham several of the girls did not give statements about their abusers for this reason).SeanT said:for foxinsox:
Again you are wrong, due to lack of personal info. There are places to go - I am told - where the girls might be trafficked, and there are places to go where the girls earn £1k a week (100 times the average wage in Thailand?) and are clearly not trafficked, and like having Chanel handbags and posh iphones. Being quite wealthy, I frequent the latter, exclusively.
I have also had many Thai girlfriends where it is all very "grey" - she genuinely likes you, but dammit, you are expected to pay for everything. I did this when young. They were quite financially needy girlfriends.
This does not exonerate me. I have indeed, however tangentially, paid for sex. Some would see this as putting me beyond the pale. Fair enough, if you are of a puritan mindset. But I do not believe I have broken Thai law, on this matter.
The question is: Would you be happy for your daughter to become a $1000 dollar a day hooker? If so what is a reasonable age to start?
If it is not good enough for your daughter, then why is it for any one elses?0 -

Rotherham Labour's facebook page has strangely disappeared.

Good to see a local aspiring politician taking the report's conclusions seriously:Although lots of things coming from the Casey Report on the #RotherhamAbuse scandal. But, many flaws in researching the truth.

Dear Roger who calls everything wrong. How many of your average Labour voters have any idea what a hedge fund is.???? Most of your everyday labour voters will think its a savings fund to get your hedges cut...0 -
The article that you linked to includes the ridiculous "88% of all prostitutes want to leave," quote, recycled over the years in many contexts. It's fiction. Melissa Farley got her subjects from charities that exist purely to take women out of prostitution. It's amazing she didn't hit 100% really.foxinsoxuk said:
If it is not good enough for your daughter, then why is it for any one elses?
I remember when this debate erupted around street prostitution in Scotland in the middle of the last decade, when kerb-crawling was made illegal. So many middle-class white feminists cared so much, until the law was passed. After the law was passed, attacks on street sex workers went up 100%. At this point they'd stopped caring though, and moved onto something else.0 -

But I've thought about this story many times, and it is something I can't comprehend, and I'm not sure I'll ever comprehend.
What differs from previous pimps recruiting is the muslim gang domination. My police friends tell me that these gangs also control other areas of organised crime, particularly drugs.
Perhaps SeanT should ask his PC girlfriend about how prostitutes are recruited, traficked and exploited in London.
I am no saint. Neither am I a Yorkshire-Pakistani taxi driver pimping and grooming 12 year olds from orphanages.
Or maybe you just find it *easier" to talk about me. Dunno.
I have condemned Rotherham (and similar scandals elsewhere) on many occasions.
There is certainly an element of the Muslim community that considers these girls as Chattels to be passed around and traded. They should be prosecuted and if Police have turned a blind eye, for corrupt reasons or for intelligence on other issues then they too should be exposed and prosecuted.
But these methods of recruiting and controlling young girls are as old as the hills.0 -
Just following up from Fox. Do you judge the moral position of "grooming" etc. in Thailand in the same way as you do in Britain ? Or, are girls different in Thailand - particularly for the satisfaction of middle aged European men.SeanT said:

Would you prefer that your daughter worked all her life in a call centre on minimum wage or spend a decade earning a $1000 a day as an escort, retiring independently wealthy at 30 with the means to enjoy the rest of her life (and according to the memoirs of some escorts having enjoyed the previous 10 years a great deal as well).foxinsoxuk said:

I ma not aware of Miliband getting kicked by Cameron in Scotland. I am reasonably confident that Labour is giving the Tories one hell of a beating in England - particularly the South. UKIP maybe getting the headlines. Just have a look at the numbers as to which party is more likely to win the seats given the swings we are aware of.Richard_Nabavi said:

"No 3: Well, well, what a surprise. Seumas Milne thinks the answer is.. to move left. Who'd a thunk it?"
Leaving out any idealogical preference I think he's right. Labour will not just drift to victory and as the clock is striking midnight they're realizing it. They need a sharp USP which can only be going hard left. Big attacks on hedge funds tax avoiders the super rich....and then go massive on soup kitchens bedroom taxes IDS etc etc.
