Why is the whole masterchef, Greg, John Torode story such huge news? As I don’t watch Masterchef am I missing a huge cultural moment like the first Impressionists exhibition?
From what I’ve heard on the radio of the Torode story calls for his resignation would be an injustice.
It appears that 7-8 years ago he made a perceived racist remark. The accuser says it was not malicious and he apologised immediately when challenged. Torode says he has no recollection of the incident.
Assuming the accusation is correct it seems like offence was caused, apologies were made and accepted and everyone moved on with their lives. What is the purpose of digging it up 8 years later?
How can people feel better about themselves without burning a witch every day?
I believe the PC term is "conflagrating a female-identifying occult practitioner"
You have been cancelled for the disgusting term “occult practitioner”
The correct term is “Wiccan faith practitioner”
Please report to Martyrs Memorial, Oxford, for public involuntary cremation.
Perhaps centrist PB shouldn’t be quite so dismissive of Corbyn & co. After all by many of their own accounts Jezza ‘forced’ them to vote for the FLSOJ. That’s pretty influential.
I quite like Sultana, and warmed to Cobyn apart from the anti-Semitism stuff. I won't be voting for the party.
At least they believe that the world can and should be a better place. I like idealists.
I like idealists but don't want them in charge at a period where least bad choices are likely best, such as now. Horses for courses and all that.
Corbyn would at least be able to offer an alternative view on Gaza. Although his adjudicated anti-Semitism is less than helpful.
The consensus view on Gaza is the correct one imo. He was a great footballer, close to the very best in the world, but the alcohol issues have taken their toll in his personal life.

Close to Best in more ways than one.
Did Gaza spend all his money on birds, booze and fast cars. And did he squander the rest? I suspect Gaza sadly spent his money on booze. Squandering the rest on pals who had names not dissimilar to Kray Twins victims.
A very important story - a hospital in Northern Ireland where there was extensive abuse of disabled people, discovered because a security camera was left running for 6 months.
Hundreds of offences. 8 years later, the enquiry is not finished, and there have been no outcomes of prosecutions.
IMO in addition to the events, it is also about institutions not being joined up in dealing with it, and the NI state still being a mess.
Article Quote: What police officers found when they visited the hospital in September 2017, triggered the UK's largest adult safeguarding investigation and made the hospital one of the nation's biggest ever crime scenes - according to data released by the police.
Unbeknown to staff, the CCTV cameras had been mistakenly left running for the six months since their installation, according to the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).
A staggering 300,000 hours of footage was discovered - equivalent to 34 years' worth. It revealed not only the alleged assault on Aaron, but hundreds of other incidents carried out by hospital staff. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8j1xxkxk74o
In Northern Ireland, there is the additional complication of The Peace Process.
This is because prosecuting A Man of Violence (retired) or a close family member is An Attack On The Peace Process.
So the PSNI has to make sure they don't officiously find evidence of a crime committed by the Right (Wrong) Kind of People.
Muses on the possible overlap between "retired" people of violence / relations to and people accused of abuse... Are the PSNI allowed to find evidence against people involved with the church or is it a complete lockout?
It’s ludicrous to be firing someone over one alleged racist joke who then apologised . That should be the end of the matter .
OTOH I can't believe the BBC got Wallace involved with the latest Masterchef series, I know they'll have to pay him salary till the allegations are proven (or not) one way or the other but surely sticking him on paid leave and getting say Galetti in his place to do the regular series would have been a prudent move.

Yes, strangely, it seems there is an overlap between torture and murder as a hobby and unpleasant behaviour in other parts of life.
On going after the Catholic Church - That would be an ecumenical matter, as a great Irish philosopher observed.
People on the right feel the need for a NOTA party. Given how shite Labour have proved to be at governing, why shouldn't the left too?
Well the NOTA on the left is being promoted by a pair of incompetents that make Liz Truss look like a Nobel Prize winning Economist, one of whom has delivered over twice as many Conservative Governments as Mrs Thatcher.
Yebbut, how competent is Farage? Everyone says "He got Brexit through!" - whilst ignoring that if he (rather than Boris) had fronted it, he would have lost the Referendum. Exhibit A, THOSE posters he released in the campaign off his own initiaitve.
Voters might currently think they want an outlet for their frustrations. I wouldn't bank on this, so far out from polling day. There's damn near four years until we have to be asked. By then we could be in a war with Russia. With a Trump Jr in the White House. Neither of those would exactly be good news for the offering of New Right or New Left.
Agree. The unknowns of the next 4 years are good reasons for thinking that Labour are the most likely gainers from it and most likely to lead the 2029 government. Reasons: Four years is a long time to sustain Reform's shaky foundations and paradoxical contradictory economic policy, the Tories currently have no path to success, Corbyn and co are yesterday's movement. Glasto has moved on. Labour's 2029 slogan 'Labour Least Worst. Trust us to screw up less than the others'.
Omg
You did a comment saying “this is why Labour are likely to win the next election”
Next, @Scott_xP on “actually I’m not that keen on Brexit”
You can never have too much of the feast of reason and the flow of soul and exciting final test match days.
Apropos of nothing in particular, an excellent article in the Speccie this week by a bloke called Sean Thomas put me in mind of the day I saw an Henri Cartier-Bresson exhibition at the V&A well over 50 years ago and the world have never quite looked the same since. Genius.

Be fair, at least by not going after former terrorists it means that British soldiers who got caught in dangerous stressful situations or made bad mistakes/decisions are also immune to prosecution - if it was only one way then that would be an absolute disgrace wouldn’t it? I’m sure Hermer agrees totally with fairness so all will be fine.

British people have every right to ask why their money is spent on asylum hotels instead of public services.
That's why I agreed a groundbreaking pilot with France.
For the first time, people who try to make the crossing illegally will find themselves back where they started.
If all the boats were taken back as soon as they arrive, or mid-channel it would be a game changer. But it's going to be 50 a week at most, doubtless held up by endless legal challenges (Which Starmer won't pass the necessary primary legislation to nix); so I doubt ol' Nige of Clacton is going to be particularly worried that it'll actually work.

The lack of quantifiers and qualifiers renders this politicised statement so misleading as to be close to the lie direct. The statement is consistent with every person being returned, and consistent with two people out of X thousand being returned. That is tabloid journalism not proper politics.

The small boats saga is an existential threat to Labour as it might be to the Tories (it never exercised me but heyho). He has to throw the kitchen sink at it. Resolve this and Brave Sir Nigel's fox is shot. Can Starmer do it? Probably not, but it's a hill to die upon.

The chemistry of the show needs an Everyman character like Wallace. NOT a pro chef but someone good on camera and can be funny and puts people at ease (this is not a comment on whatever he did or didn’t do off camera)
I’ve heard from people who work on the show that he is not just good at this but crucially good. The two chefs are lofty and superior, Wallace is a pivot between them and the contestants and the audience, Wallace enjoys food but as an amateur
What you’re saying is like @Roger saying “oh just find a funny guy, he will replace Jeremy Clarkson, that’s Top Gear sorted”
Gregg Wallace is not a truly big talent like Clarkson but he’s definitely a talent

I think it was made last year just as Todgergate was breaking. Bit like Jools' Hootananny, it takes the spontaneous gloss off a bit.

I just think he was too high a risk for this (Already filmed, not yet put out) series though. I think there's other people they could have got in. Galetti is familiar with the format from presenting professionals, and less haughty than I think Wareing who defo wouldn't go well with Torrode.
Just as an aside, I sometimes watched ye olde Masterchef with Lloyd Grossman[sp]. Watched a few minutes of the 'new' version and instantly disliked both the format (can't have something relaxed can we?) and Wallace irritating as hell.
I see banner headlines today announcing that Donald Trump is 'disappointed' with Vladimir Putin. Very poignant. I'm disappointed in both of them quite frankly.

What will it be like? What are the certainties? What are the possibles? How do they resolve the social democrat v Singaporian buccaneer demands of Reform?
It'll be brexit all over again. The fact that the Fukker program in government, much like brexit, will actually make all of the country's problems not only worse but harder to resolve will be excused by blaming it on lawyers, judges, 'woke', immigrants and the EU. Fukkerism just hasn't been tried properly yet, &c.
In summary, it'll be Johnson to the power of Truss. Chaos, corruption, cruelty and nationalism of the most banal stripe typified by flegs. So many flegs. Every single tory on here will quite like it.
If they wave enough flegs, particularly butchers aprons, they will be successful in the sectarian parts of Scotland.

Developing new talents rather than over-relying upon the same ones is part of what the BBC should be doing, if they were sensible.
Wallace absolutely is not Clarkson. Clarkson's Top Gear was one of the world's, not the UK's biggest shows and exported around the planet.
Whereas there's 'a Wallace' around the world in a plethora of Masterchef adaptions. We used to watch Masterchef Australia which again had someone in that role you describe, not a chef but a good frontman to pivot.
Someone like him, but not him, should not be an impossible ask, unlike replacing Clarkson.
I see banner headlines today announcing that Donald Trump is 'disappointed' with Vladimir Putin. Very poignant. I'm disappointed in both of them quite frankly.
Disappointed with him in the same way I was disappointed with my 3 year old when she started playing up at tea time yesterday.

Although it's not quite on a par with making the elephant face with one's pockets and one's old boy.
The only issue with the Greg case is that he wasn’t fired sooner.
And why call it the “elephant face” rather than sexual harassment and/or exposing himself. You are diminishing the seriousness of Greg’s behaviour by doing that.
I got all excited then I saw @findoutnowUK and then I got less excited.
But compare like with like. Recently Findoutmadstuff have recorded Reform coming off their highs
This shows them right back at the top end of their polling. Mid 30s. Gamechanging levels of support
Its not like with like. Its a different methodology, hence the reason the changes are quoted from GE 24 and not from the regular Find Out Now poll conducted the same day as this one. Find Out Now have not published these figures on their website. It might be the actual current situation and Reform might be surging to mid thirties, in which case we will see others reporting them surging again, but this isnt a like for like poll.

The BBC can’t afford Clarkson any more. They blew it. Probably their biggest talent ever
The viewing stats for Clarkson’s Farm are insane. I did a little deep dive yesterday on its viewership
It’s massive in America. Also massive in Australia, NZ, Canada
But that’s just the anglophonie. Anywhere else?
Yes. Huge in Germany, Holland, Finland. Number 1 streamed show in Singapore. Singapore! Growing a major fan base in China

MasterChef is produced by Banijay and Endemol Shine UK for the BBC in the UK.

As if anything is going to happen after 50 days, how many deadlines have been set that have come and gone.
The same nearly happened with Iran, but Israel called his bluff and when the deadline elapsed they stepped in - had they not done so, it would have been on the never never like it is with Russia.

Probably more of a piss artist. He's got that massive kite/skinny legs combo that seems typical of the permanently drunk.
I see Donald has been heaping praise on Sir Keir while being disparaging about the pioneers of Brexit. It can't be long before the British Right sues for a MAGA divorce.
With figures like these, the Greens should be given much more media coverage than they are. QT is a particularly egregious example,.
So should the Lib Dems. The main reason Reform have been so successful is their constant media coverage. The reason that Change UK and Alba never got off the ground, and any Sultana/Corbyn party won’t get off the ground, is that they got, and will get, very little media coverage.
Our media want a right wing party in power, preferably also racist and low tax. Reform could actually get them what they want.

Because the BBC loves talking about itself.
Good morning, everyone.
Yesterday the first 7 minutes of the 6 o'clock news on R4 was the BBC talking about itself. Firstly, they were agonising about the Hamas propaganda video that they had shown (even although they were happy to conclude it was really someone else's fault) and then the Masterchef fiasco (which also seemed to be someone else's fault). Even by the standards of the BBC it was peak indulgence justified, apparently, by how important their reputation is.
Still, they got an exclusive with Trump, explaining how we'd bungled Brexit, and what a good guy Starmer is...

But compare like with like. Recently Findoutmadstuff have recorded Reform coming off their highs
This shows them right back at the top end of their polling. Mid 30s. Gamechanging levels of support
I did say at the time the Labour revival would tee up claims by Goodwin of an even bigger Reform revival.*
* I am not dissing a BPC registered polling genius by the way. To be clear.
Goodwin today is attacking entryists into Reform from the old dispensation Tories like Berry, on the basis that they won't be with the low tax, small state, anti welfare agenda. He overlooks the fact, which is as plain as it is possible to be, that Reform's voters are also large state, large welfare/pensions/NHS/free stuff supporters too. It is plain that Farage has spotted this obvious truth. I don't think Goodwin is quite with the programme.
I see banner headlines today announcing that Donald Trump is 'disappointed' with Vladimir Putin. Very poignant. I'm disappointed in both of them quite frankly.
"I am disappointed in Vladimir Putin so I am giving him 50 days to take as much of Ukraine as he can before making a peace deal based around all those advances Russia has made into Ukraine in those 50 days. Good luck Vlad."
As if anything is going to happen after 50 days, how many deadlines have been set that have come and gone.
The same nearly happened with Iran, but Israel called his bluff and when the deadline elapsed they stepped in - had they not done so, it would have been on the never never like it is with Russia.
What are you suggesting? Putin attacks Ukraine with fire and fury so Trump has to join the pro Putin coalition with more fire and fury. Granted, that should get the war finished quickly
The BBC need someone like him but not him
Developing new talents rather than over-relying upon the same ones is part of what the BBC should be doing, if they were sensible.
Yes I agree. It will be tricky but certainly not impossible
But given the BBC’s propensity for fecking things up, of late, they might easily fail
It’s ludicrous to be firing someone over one alleged racist joke who then apologised . That should be the end of the matter .

That would make interesting judging. Clarkson promoting traditional British cookery v Torode promoting Asian and Caribbean cookery. Hard luck if your forte is Mediterranean cookery.

The BBC can’t afford Clarkson any more. They blew it. Probably their biggest talent ever
The viewing stats for Clarkson’s Farm are insane. I did a little deep dive yesterday on its viewership
It’s massive in America. Also massive in Australia, NZ, Canada
But that’s just the anglophonie. Anywhere else?
Yes. Huge in Germany, Holland, Finland. Number 1 streamed show in Singapore. Singapore! Growing a major fan base in China
It’s the second most streamed Amazon prime show globally. And it’s about farming in chipping Norton
Clarkson is a genius surrounded by a genius team. And the bbc just chucked him under the bus. Twats
Yes, Clarkson, and Noel Edmonds too. He's also a genius. Just look at what he's doing with that thing in New Zealand. Years off the telly, bounces back at the age of 76 with a hit show set in New Zealand. It's as if he's never been away. These guys get sneered at but it's a rare skill they have.
I got all excited then I saw @findoutnowUK and then I got less excited.

But, equally, it’s not THAT poll with Jezbollah taken out but the same number - which is what you seem to be implying?
Meanwhile you gov also show reform ticking up again. So this isn’t just one poll
Eyes down. Go nigel!
Its from the same poll, taken the same time - the twitter handle 'Stats for Lefties' who reported it has lifted the figures from the tables (which arent for some reason on FoNs website. The LBC article on the dried fruits for 15% poll states 'they draw 6% from both the Greens and Labour' which directly correlates with these figures .
YouGov, I agree, says we should watch Reforms figure over the next couple of weeks (the proper weekly FoN also had them +1 tbf)
Edit - be interesting whether raisin bran and the grandpa were prompted first then prompting without or vice versa

Farage wants power (although I don’t know why because grafting like Trump won’t be possible) and to do that he needs a plausible front bench which means he needs to attract Tories (of any bent) to make it looks plausible.
No point bringing in the people Goodwin thinks are correct because that will scare the markets before the election let alone afterwards
Just as an aside, I sometimes watched ye olde Masterchef with Lloyd Grossman[sp]. Watched a few minutes of the 'new' version and instantly disliked both the format (can't have something relaxed can we?) and Wallace irritating as hell.
Good taste there, he is a tiresome watch. Masterchef need to have an urgent rethink on presenters. It's got stale. I'd like to see Adrian Chiles given a runout.

We can see with Trump that there are always a few true believers in this sort of situation that end up abandoned when the Great Leader ends up having different priorities than their most fervent acolytes.
The question with Farage is, what are his priorities? It's obvious with Trump that he's in it for the graft first, the attention second, and he's happy for minions to pursue their own agendas.
But Farage? I don't really know. Maybe there's some deep psychological trauma that he's hoping will be healed when he's appointed PM by KCIII?

1. That the US does very little trade with Russia so tariffs make sod all difference; 2. That Putin won't care about the few sectors that are affected. 3. That it'll have no impact on Russia's war-making capacity.
If Trump was serious about being very disappointed, he'd be ramping up arms and finance supply to Ukraine, and genuine sanctions on Russia.

I've dabbled in TV at the edge. Presented a couple of things, been on some live shows (ugh!). It is incredibly hard, you have to appear super natural, smooth, relaxed, genial - while also being funny or at least likeable and articulate - while inside every molecule is screaming FECK FECK FECK I'M ON TV
A rare talent indeed, Sadly this talent is sometimes given to monstrous characters like Savile, and because they are so rare they can get away with horrors
I don't believe Wallace is anywhere near this category. I feel rather sorry for him, none of his crimes seems especially outrageous, but I guess the pattern of behaviour makes it impossible for the Beeb, and fair enough

Sure. But that doesn't give 'talent' a free licence to behave as they want. The BBC has more than enough experience in that department.

What Trump is really disappointed with Putin for is that he's not with Trump's project to win a Nobel Peace Prize.
The spin is that he's proposing secondary tariffs - i.e. large US tariffs on the countries still buying Russian oil and gas experts (like China, India, and some European countries), which might cut off the income Russia receives which is financing their war effort. But I don't expect it to happen.

What are you suggesting? Putin attacks Ukraine with fire and fury so Trump has to join the pro Putin coalition with more fire and fury. Granted, that should get the war finished quickly
I'm suggesting TACO will stand back and do bugger all
50 days will come and go and nothing will happen. Putin is too weak to force a victory in Ukraine, Trump is too chicken to stand up to Putin, so the war will still be going.
Also note that Trump reverts to his first choice of 'very tough tariffs', which ignores (intentionally or not):
What Trump is really disappointed with Putin for is that he's not with Trump's project to win a Nobel Peace Prize.
He's proposing "secondary" tariffs - i.e. they will hit third countries trading with Russia. He's also done a deal to deliver US weapons from NATO stocks to Ukraine.
What's the likelihood of his imposing a 100% tariff on China ?
I see banner headlines today announcing that Donald Trump is 'disappointed' with Vladimir Putin. Very poignant. I'm disappointed in both of them quite frankly.
"I am disappointed in Vladimir Putin so I am giving him 50 days to take as much of Ukraine as he can before making a peace deal based around all those advances Russia has made into Ukraine in those 50 days. Good luck Vlad."

The story on CNN suggests the fifty days allows Putin the time he needs to regroup and import a shed load of North Korean mercenaries and hardware.
Regroup to what end? There is plenty of chat that the North Koreans who were wiped out earlier this year were their finest special forces. Although they could send basic grunts as bullet-catchers. Putin's "summer offensive" has acquired a few more mined fields but not got close to Sumy. Meanwhile the Russian coffers are running dry and there is paranoia abounding in the Kremlin and amongst the oligarchs. Putin is esconced - but has never been more exposed.
Trump is obviously a stooge. The least he could have done is told Putin to stop the missile barrages on civilian targets. First school or hospital or theatre or shopping mall or train or residential block that gets hit, the 100% (which should be 500%) tariffs come into effect at midnight. He has the support of Congress to deliver that. It would actually save the lives of those he so feebly professes to care about.
Paul Holloywood raw dogging Prue Leith over a rack of French trimmed chops whilst a montage plays of the ongoing struggle for equal food based rights. Thats the obvious future for Masterchef
The BBC need someone like him but not him
You should audition - what are you like on camera ? You can certainly ponce on about food with the best of them.
Not sure that would be the wisest next move by the BBC.
He would fulfil the Davie/ Gibb regime right wing presenter agenda.

Does Jeremy Clarkson like food?
The BBC can’t afford Clarkson any more. They blew it. Probably their biggest talent ever
The viewing stats for Clarkson’s Farm are insane. I did a little deep dive yesterday on its viewership
It’s massive in America. Also massive in Australia, NZ, Canada
But that’s just the anglophonie. Anywhere else?
Yes. Huge in Germany, Holland, Finland. Number 1 streamed show in Singapore. Singapore! Growing a major fan base in China
It’s the second most streamed Amazon prime show globally. And it’s about farming in chipping Norton
Clarkson is a genius surrounded by a genius team. And the bbc just chucked him under the bus. Twats
He punched a producer because he could. That, even to the BBC, is justifiably worse than whirling one's todger around as a fan on a warm day.
A punch. Whatever. He apologised. The guy got squillions in compensation. It wasn't necrophilia
No, the lefties at the BBC hated Clarkson and wanted him gone, it was political (TBF Clarkson did love to wind them up)
The Woke managers got what they wanted, Clarkson went, and the BBC lost one of the most impressive talents in global TV and a massive hit show and the BBC's claim on the public now declines monthly. So they shoulda been more careful

He punched a producer the day before his contract expired. As even Jeremy said - the BBC couldn’t exactly re-employ him given that issue so he doesn’t blame the BBC.
I suspect the millions he’s made from Amazon may slightly colour his memory but you can see why they left Top Gear - it was the perfect opportunity to do so

Don't be silly.
It would be 100% of the value of their trade with Russia, and he may have the EU in mind more than China. It's a useful tool to coerce them to pay for the weapons that the US is giving to Ukraine.
There was a Trump/Putin phone call on July 3rd in which Putin told Trump he aimed to complete the conquest of the four oblasts (Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhia and Kherson) over the next 60 days.
Yesterday, on July 14th, Trump gave Putin a 50-day deadline to reach a deal. A deadline that expires one day after Putin's 60 day summer offensive period.
Trump just lets Putin walk over him. When was there a weaker US President?
British people have every right to ask why their money is spent on asylum hotels instead of public services.
That's why I agreed a groundbreaking pilot with France.
For the first time, people who try to make the crossing illegally will find themselves back where they started.
If all the boats were taken back as soon as they arrive, or mid-channel it would be a game changer. But it's going to be 50 a week at most, doubtless held up by endless legal challenges (Which Starmer won't pass the necessary primary legislation to nix); so I doubt ol' Nige of Clacton is going to be particularly worried that it'll actually work.
We were discussing les bateaux after 5-a-side the other night. There are some scholars of refinement in that team - Little Stevie has a 100+ streak going in Wordle - but only I could come up with a solution that would work.
The British government should get Ukrainian on their arses and outsource enforcement on the French side to the gullible and desperate. Make an account on Telegram that offers 10k EUR in BTC to anybody who fucks up a fugee boat as it leaves l'hexagone. Get some MI6 nerds to run it through a shell company in Panama or wherever. Effective. Cheap. Deniable.

Just as an aside, I sometimes watched ye olde Masterchef with Lloyd Grossman[sp]. Watched a few minutes of the 'new' version and instantly disliked both the format (can't have something relaxed can we?) and Wallace irritating as hell.
The old Masterchef could be quite brutal as I recall - seeing some hapless amateur cook being absolutely crushed as Grossman proclaimed his boredom with mousses.

On going after the Catholic Church - That would be an ecumenical matter, as a great Irish philosopher observed.
Apropos of nothing in particular, an excellent article in the Speccie this week by a bloke called Sean Thomas put me in mind of the day I saw an Henri Cartier-Bresson exhibition at the V&A well over 50 years ago and the world have never quite looked the same since. Genius.

* I am not dissing a BPC registered polling genius by the way. To be clear.
In retrospect it really is a question of wtf were you thinking when filming this series
And why call it the “elephant face” rather than sexual harassment and/or exposing himself. You are diminishing the seriousness of Greg’s behaviour by doing that.
It might be the actual current situation and Reform might be surging to mid thirties, in which case we will see others reporting them surging again, but this isnt a like for like poll.

Meanwhile you gov also show reform ticking up again. So this isn’t just one poll
Eyes down. Go nigel!
But given the BBC’s propensity for fecking things up, of late, they might easily fail
YouGov, I agree, says we should watch Reforms figure over the next couple of weeks (the proper weekly FoN also had them +1 tbf)

No point bringing in the people Goodwin thinks are correct because that will scare the markets before the election let alone afterwards
