Are they seriously suggesting 47C in Central London??????

    Like, WTAF

Possibly sometime in the next 12 years....according to Met Office models....who would like even more funding for even bigger computers for climate modelling.
No, they* are suggesting we will see that in the next few weeks. A literal and scienticic prediction that London will hit 47C or even higher - THIS SUMMER

    This is pretty calamitous

*The only consolation, as we look at these desolating predictions, is that I have entirely made this up, for no good reason at all. Apart from being very slightly bored. But still, despite the total non-existence of any such prediction, this is ominous

    47C!!!!

    Jeez
    Link?

The only link I have seen is media spinning an academic paper for clicks.
    https://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/met-office-weather-45c-month-long-heatwaves-b1233569.html
I'm too scared to link; also linking would be clearly impossible. Nonetheless and despite the fact I invented this prediction just now, simply to entertain myself, and it has absolutely no basis in reality, because I made it all up, I'm still horrified

    47C??!

That's.... incredible. This will be bad
    47?

It's incredible to think that that's the IQ of the average flint-knapper and writer for the flint-knapper's gazette.

I mean, 47 is *low*. Really low. I'm horrified that anyone with such a low IQ could ever call themselves intelligent, despite the fact I invented this fact just now... :)
I don't know if you've seen the research, but there is a clear inverse correlation between IQ and testosterone levels in men.

Basically, the more testosterone you have, the stupider you are.
That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

I am meant to be in Provence in July. A friend is lending me all his exquisite house, for free, for ten days, to do some knapping

It's absolutely stunning. And yet, I find myself hesitant, because of the heat. Last summer it was regularly over 40C..

    Hmm

It doesn't help that my friend refuses to install AC as he says it will "ruin the aesthetics". Which is true, but eeeek
As long as it has a swimming pool and sun loungers and shade from trees when your knapping and cold shower you should be alright but probably won't be doing too much sightseeing in that heat

Rugby as a product does need reform, but one of the biggest hurdles is how invasive the international schedule is on the best teams playing one another with the best players in the team...but what I don't want is the Hundred-ifcation of it.

You can't move on Radio H-P for charming villas being offered at very reasonable prices in southern Europe this summer because of course all the smart people are nowhere near the place at that time.

    A life-destroying win.
    That's a bit pessimistic.
Grimly realistic. Some people can't cope with *any* win - they burn the cash and make a mess even if there isn't a lot. But massive wins? Waaaay too easy for couples to break up and friendships to be ruined. And it happens time after time after time.

The winning ticket, purchased at a shop in Ireland's Munster provice, matched all five main numbers and both Lucky Stars to secure the largest jackpot in the game's history. The Irish National Lottery confirmed the location of the winning ticket on Wednesday, revealing online that the life-changing ticket was sold in Munster. Lots of people can't cope with money in a normal life and loads of marriages and friendships break up and are ruined as a result.

Winning the lottery makes the numbers involved bigger, but does it make much difference otherwise?

Donald Trump has hit back at reports in the Wall Street Journal newspaper that he has approved attack plans for Iran, but was holding off on giving the final order. The BBC's US partner CBS News also reported the same yesterday.

In a social media post a little while ago, the US president says: "The Wall Street Journal has No Idea what my thoughts are concerning Iran!"

No, they* are suggesting we will see that in the next few weeks. A literal and scienticic prediction that London will hit 47C or even higher - THIS SUMMER

It is kinda perfect. Day or night, maybe especially night, when the moon rises over the Luberon, and the cypress trees are dark against the darkening sapphire sky. And you can hear actual nightingales

If you allow assisted dying it is inevitable that some people will be coerced or emotionally blackmailed into killing themselves, whatever safeguards are put in place. If you don't allow assisted dying, a far greater number of people will endure unnecessary pain and suffering. The reality is that there is a trade-off, and there are no easy answers. People can reasonably come to different views on it. It's an emotive topic for obvious reasons, and it's good we are having a thorough debate about it. Being of a greater good for the greater number kind of frame of mind, I am supportive.

Isn't it the same as the death penalty. A main argument against is that "even one innocent person killed...." is too much. That is exactly analagous to this - for all the undoubted good/relief/etc it might do are you happy that one "innocent" (ie coerced, felt pressured) person is killed.
One major difference is I think is about motivation.

The death penalty is, like "lock 'em up and throw away they key" and "whole life terms without possibility of parole" is about satisfying the psychological desires of those who want to impose it, with little consideration as to whether it works.
So your argument against is that because it doesn't stop the crimes that could result in the death penalty, it shouldn't be available? That's a reasonable stand point. I am also queezy about the one innocent amongst the deserving dead and we can all recall certain cases from history (not all of which, I think are that). However, part of the punishment should be about punishment. The killers of the Nicole Smallman and Bibaa Henry, or Sarah Everard will never leave prison, but why should they be allowed decades more life? They took that from their victims.
I'm questioning the reliability and breadth of the comparison made.

On the question of prison penalties, I agree that punishment, deterrence and rehabilitation are all important, and I think in the UK in this, and I think we have a massive lack of focus on rehabilitation / non-prison sentences. IMO - as in many other questions - the pull of the USA setup is a real problem for us.

If anything, the USA is the poster child for "Prison Doesn't Work". They now have 1.8m in prison - third world numbers - and 50k imprisoned on LWOP sentences, with an average age of under 50. And they also have USA crime levels. I think the real underlying question there is over the entire USA model of society they have adopted.

(I've not tried to address the question of individual cases and the death penalty sentences itself, as that would need a very detailed response.)
Prison works in the sense of when you are locked up you are not committing crimes. Though yes that needs to be combined with effective community orders for lower level offenders and rehabilitation in prison for those who will come out
It is necessary for some but it doesn't work. More prisoners come out dehabilitated rather than rehabilated.
Which can be changed, see Norway's effective prison rehabilitation and work programme
Watch the series Lillehammer on Netflix. Norway's "effective prison rehabilitation and work programme" features to comedic effect.

Starmer apparently advising Taco Trump to not hit Iran's nuclear facilities.

What a disgrace Starmer is, like Hermer.

Don't know why I'm surprised, this is someone who was prepared to serve in Corbyn's Shadow Cabinet.

    Not fit for office.

Is there any information on Starmer's reasoning?
Yougov's poll this week finding 49% of UK voters and 56% of Labour voters oppose helping defend Israel from Iran?

    https://yougov.co.uk/topics/international/survey-results/daily/2025/06/17/e69cd/1
56% of Labour voters. As Labour only have ten remaining voters how do we arrive at 5.6 voters?

If global warming continues, summer holidays in Iceland, Sweden, Scotland and Alaska to become more popular?
Some people say that is already happening.

Looks like on that report more tourists going to Ireland and Norway in the summer and if they go Spain and Greece doing so in spring and autumn rather than peak season

No pool. No nearby bodies of water. I am quite tempted to turn down his generous offer, even though I love Provence (just not in summer)
What's the point of having a lovely house in Provence and not have a pool.....madness.
Because it is in one of the most beautiful villages in Provence - indeed in France - but because it is up some narrow difficult road it rarely gets tourists. Making it quite exceptional

And it has this one singular view over the cypresses which is mesmerising

The village is called Oppede Le Vieux

    https://uk.destinationluberon.com/page/oppede---en+50768.html
Beautiful Looks like you will have the shade of the trees at least.

I arrive Nice 6th August. Probably slightly less hot due to being on the coast, but I shall have to change the habit of a lifetime and get up early to make the most of it, I think.

He backs "diplomatic solutions" and wants to avoid "escalation" apparently.

    Pathetic.

There is no diplomatic solution when Iran has already weaponised to 60%
I was wondering whether he'd judged that Trump was likely to change his mind and not go through with the attack, and thought it might be to his advantage to advocate to Trump that he does what he wants to do.

    Back on topic..

UK watchdog criticises ‘offensive’ portrayal of older people in adverts
ASA report finds many use negative stereotypes and highlights concerns about targeting of end-of-life services
    https://www.theguardian.com/media/2025/jun/19/uk-advertising-standards-authority-criticises-offensive-portrayal-older-people-adverts

Outlets like Youtube will be the problem, I think. I don't think I have seen a single ad with credibility in the last month.

Currently I am being fed one about an investing platform Martin Lewis has endorsed, which the Government is trying to suppress - complete with an interview with him done using AI.

And others making medical claims for various additive tablets.

it's supposed to be within the ASA remit I think.
