Romanian Exit polls aren’t the gold standard and they normally don’t include the diaspora vote .
That's a good point, the diaspora voted 60-25 in favour of Simion, so it would be reasonable to suggest a 67-33 split for Simion in the 2nd round.
In Romania, it was 11.5m votes 30 minutes before the close of polls and 1.6m in the diaspora, so that would be something like 6.7m votes for Dan, 6.4m for Simion.
There was a suggestion that Simion wouldn’t get that high lead in the diaspora in the second round as his first round overestimated his lead due to higher enthusiasm amongst his support which maxed out more of his available voters . Another exit poll shows 50 50 and then another shows a bigger lead for Dan than the earlier ones 56 v 44.
I really wouldn’t trust these exit polls but turnout in urban areas jumped much more in the second round than in rural areas so this should help Dan .

Why would the diaspora be so strongly for Simion? I was recently dating a Romanian lady, I'll have to ask her on that.

The only time I've come across the stuff. On other music related news, I see it was Eurovision's lack of true democracy that stopped Israel winning. Was it all about the song or is something else going on?
Israel had a decent song but an unrivaled astroturfing operation, with voters able to vote 20 times each across a wide range of countries.
To describe the voting system as a democracy takes a shovel full of salt.
'Unrivalled astroturfing operation' - any evidence for this? I see the British gave 10 points to Poland. No surprise there! Weren't disappointed were you.
I do wonder if there was an element of the sympathy vote or even if people have quite frankly had enough of pro Hamas demonstrations on our streets week after week.
More importantly, my pic of the day - an almond croissant. Actually, more like an almond sweet Cornish pasty, with frangipane replacing the customary filling.

It’s bizarre and does defy logic somewhat as to what we’d expect . Apparently it’s a result of having to leave their country , a vote against corruption and wanting to go back to a better Romania etc

Does Eurovision HQ release the actual numbers of televotes?
They do release who gave Israel 12 points. There were 13 countries (including UK) and a further 7 giving 10.
Across all 38 televote constituencies they got an average of 7.8 points.
It came after the FDF waged a campaign to put pressure on the DHSC to rewrite its nutrition policy, lobbying officials to remove the push to minimally processed food in the guidance issued to retailers, according to documents and emails reviewed by the Guardian.
In response to a freedom of information request, the government released a cache of emails between the FDF and the DHSC.
Most of the correspondence was heavily redacted. The government cited section 40(2) of the Freedom of Information Act, “which provides for the protection of personal information”, and section 35(1)(a), “which provides protection for the information that relates to the formulation or development of government policy”.
The emails, sent between October 2022 and April 2023, reveal how the FDF, which represents firms with a combined annual turnover of more than £112bn, lobbied the DHSC to drop the guidance pushing retailers to promote minimally processed food...
I'm no food expert and subsist on a perfectly balanced diet of fish (protein) and chips (fat and carbohydrates) every day, and an apple.
But I'm suspicious of food arguments that lump "ultra-processed food" into a single category. Over the decades, everything around food resembles one set of faddists arguing with another group of faddists. Or fattests.
Nor am I shocked that industry lobbyists lobby for industry-favourable outcomes. That's their mission statement.
OTOH measures which industry lobbyists moan about have been significant successes - the extra tax on high sugar, for example, which reduced sugar levels in drinks to just below the threshold. And which has shown to deliver health benefits.
There are some real inconsistencies in that though, such as the exemption for milk-based drinks which mean that many milk-based drinks are full of sugar.
As someone who avoids sugar/carbs, it pisses me off that all bottled coffee-based drinks are full of sugar.
There are naturally no carbs in coffee and milk is naturally minimal in it too, but there's no sugar-free low-carb coffee based bottled drinks ever available in the supermarket.
I dislike the nanny state in principle, but being selfish I hate the lack of sugar-free coffee-based drinks when I'm out and about and the need to go for some Monster or something similar if I want a caffeine drink that's sugar free rather than coffee.
You realise lactose is a sugar and natural milk is full of it?
I remember when foreign elections were the stuff of mild political nerd interest. Now every one seems to have become a critical battle for the survival of the Western world order against the forces of MAGA and Putinism.

The Hungarian diaspora is what keeps Orban in office, ironically much of it in Romania.

Off topic: Today is the 45th anniversary of the big eruption of Mount. St. Helens: "The May 18, 1980, event was the most deadly and economically destructive volcanic eruption in the history of the contiguous United States.[9] About 57 people were killed directly from the blast, and 200 houses, 47 bridges, 15 mi (24 km) of railways, and 185 mi (298 km) of highway were destroyed; two people were killed indirectly in accidents that resulted from poor visibility, and two more suffered fatal heart attacks from shoveling ash." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1980_eruption_of_Mount_St._Helens
It was more deadly than expected because the blast went sideways, instead of straight up.
I’ve had a weekend of almost @BartholomewRoberts esque diet. After my fairly balanced meal out on Friday night it’s been:
Saturday breakfast: Bacon, sausage and egg bap Saturday lunch: huge chunks of bbq fillet steak, with courgettes Saturday dinner: barbecued chicken Sunday breakfast: bit of a break, with a cinnamon bun Sunday lunch: a whole rack of barbecued pork ribs and asparagus Sunday dinner: barbecued steak again, and pork chops
Got tummy ache
Did you wash it down with 24 cans of sugar free energy drinks?
An odd mix of crap Prosecco (at the reunion), tea and coffee, butty bach, and cider.
Sympathies. Life is far far far too short for crap Prosecco
When we were trainees together we got invited to my boss's house for a party. My future wife muttered under her breath on her arrival, "fizzy wine? Surely he can do better than that." It was her introduction to champagne, a relationship which, on a good day, I think has proven only second to our own over the last 40 odd years.
She doesn't drink prosecco.
I am a big fan of prosecco. Since covid altered Mrs Foxy's tastebuds she prefers it to all other wines, flat other sparkling. I can't bear the stuff myself but it's saving me a bloody fortune.

(For the record: I've hiked up Mount Saint Helens twice since the blast.)
The American composer Alan Hohvaness wrote a symphony on this very subject. Better than you might think (he's not universally regarded). Nothing like an orchestral rendition of a volcanic explosion.

You're wrong to scoff. As an aside there's generally too much scoffing on here. The unhurried intimacy of Desert Island Discs draws out the essence of the guest and Keir Starmer's essence was most appealing. Everyone I know who listened to it thought so.

You do know that some people would say the same about Kemi Badenoch but it seems in both cases, they are an ever decreasing number
I don't think she's been on Desert Island Discs?
She'd probably pick something pretentious like Barenboim, none of this Stormzy authenticity

For years I used to drink about 40% of a bottle every night, mixed with fizzy water becasue I didn't like the taste.. I don't like the taste of any alcohol on it's own anymore.
Anyway, I stopped this bad habit in October, and that is part of the reason, along with the lack of nibbles that I used to nibble whilst drinking this fizzy cocktail, I have lost about a stone.

He’s interested in the Northern Bukovina part of Ukraine. Moldova would be more of an Anschluss I think.
Not quite as bad as his out and out pro Russian predecessor Georgiescu though.

And that's not that impressive, Israel only got the 14th highest televote in the 11 contests since the EBU started splitting the jury and televote scores. What happened this year was the voting was split over many more contenders. in 2024, Israel ended the jury vote 313 points adrift from Switzerland so their 323 wasn't enough and they ended 5th. This year they ended the jury vote only 198 points shy of Austria, and their 297 was good enough for 2nd.
Poland always gets a massive diaspora vote as well (they have never got less in the televote than from the juries).

The biggest external threats the west faces are from China and Islamism. MAGA correctly understood is an isolationist movement. Which makes Trump's imperialistic behaviour more puzzling. The biggest threat Putin now poses is that he's a capo of Beijing.
Notice that China's new EV European HQ will be in..... Hungary.

Interestingly, in much of Eastern Europe, your classic real hardcore nationalists (the kind that would get @tim on the bounce in the Goode Olde Days) have turned firmly against irridentism.

Right now Russia is in the middle of invading a European country, and deliberately destabilising many others. I would argue that whilst it’s a far weaker force than China, it remains a more direct threat to Europe.

Whereas Madri lager is as Spanish as Newcastle Brown Ale.
Carling Black Label rebranded...whoever was responsible for the marketing did an incredible job.
AB InBev and Heineken Corp have done an amazing job convincing UK consumers to buy all these exotic sounding beer brands which are either fake brands or that are all made under licence in sexy places like Barnsley or Blackburn etc (and all owned by those two companies) and bare very little resemble to the real stuff.

Growing up in her home it was Michael Jackson. She said so in a Telegraph interview.

It is incredible that Coors have rebranded an incredibly unpopular and shitty lager with a minor tweak to the formulae and convinced millions of brits they are now drinking some exotic Spanish lager, rather than gnats piss from Burton-Upon-Trent.
Not a lot of people realise San Miguel ain't originally Spanish either. And I don't mean the brewed under licence in the UK, it was originally from the Philippines imported into Spain.

The only reason it continues to pose a significant threat to Europe is because of support from China. I've been among the most hawkish of Ukraine supporters on here and would be even if China was completely neutral and there weren't NK troops there either.

Madri is disgusting. I don't understand why anyone drinks it. A pint of Doom Bar wins for me anyday and I'm not a massive real ale drinker. Madri is fizzy cat piss.
It is incredible that Coors have rebranded an incredibly unpopular and shitty lager with a minor tweak to the formulae and convinced millions of brits they are now drinking some exotic Spanish lager, rather than gnats piss from Burton-Upon-Trent.
The stuff has infested the social corners of Britain like Japanese knotweed.
I bet the Italians can’t believe their luck that we are all paying hard money for their shittiest fizzy wine
Congrats to the guys who came up with the name “Prosecco” tho. It’s a local village I think. Genius branding
At least it is Italian.
Whereas Madri lager is as Spanish as Newcastle Brown Ale.

I believe it has hit the British bits of Spain. Estrella complained to the EU about it and tried to block it's import to Spain but because it doesn't have a specific GI there was no case to block it. It doesn't actually say anywhere it's Spanish or made in Spain or any specific part of Spain. It's clever marketing but shit beer.
I remember when foreign elections were the stuff of mild political nerd interest. Now every one seems to have become a critical battle for the survival of the Western world order against the forces of MAGA and Putinism.
Please can we have back the old days?
The biggest external threats the west faces are from China and Islamism. MAGA correctly understood is an isolationist movement. Which makes Trump's imperialistic behaviour more puzzling. The biggest threat Putin now poses is that he's a capo of Beijing.
Notice that China's new EV European HQ will be in..... Hungary.
Just seen the first seat projections from Portugal.
AD (PSD + CDS) well in front with 86-95 seats, PS on 53-62 and Chega on 51-60 so very close for second place.
I always find Portuguese political parties confusing, the Social Democratic Party lot (which in most countries means left of centre) are actually right of centre, when the left / far left have been in power in recent years they enacted loads of tax breaks for the rich....

You have to admit, a brilliant piece of work by the brand guys.

Never tried Madri. Is it as bad as Budweiser?
It always amazes me with all those Germans who went to the US, and that is what became the national beer....
Its not like the excuse for the chocolate tasting like sick is actually down to figuring out a key manufacturing process that differs to the way those in Europe worked out a similar time. So it wasn't like the immigrants knew how to do it, nobody in the world at the time did and two differing processes were discovered at a similar time, one that tastes like sick and the European way.

Didn't mean you in particular just that too many people have been persuaded lager is a potable drink, where as it has to be so chilled you cant actually taste it to make it potable

Refreshing, lately, for European countries with that electoral system.

Maybe never having had a can of McEwans export is why they are still extant....the stuff is rank...not as bad as lager but still wow I don't want to drink that again if I can avoid it rank
Madri is disgusting. I don't understand why anyone drinks it. A pint of Doom Bar wins for me anyday and I'm not a massive real ale drinker. Madri is fizzy cat piss.
Doom Bar is to ale what Madri is to lager.
While true at least in general ale is tasty where as lager is carbonated deep chilled cats piss
I defy you to say that, after having a taste of real lager.
Name a real lager had to try a few as many places dont sell non lager stuff in pints, never found one I ever wanted to regurgitate again
Very few diaspora votes have been counted yet . The ones that have come through are favouring Dan but these might be from Eastern Europe especially Moldova which is the best diaspora support for Dan .
There are 388,000 diaspora votes. Dan is currently ahead of Simion by 587,000 votes with 88% counted. This includes 20% of the diaspora votes that have been counted where he is 5% behind. He's won. Good
Edit Correction there are 555,000 diaspora votes. Even so.

So Poland looks like staying right. Trzaskowski and Nawrocki both around 30% and one has to think that Mentzen and Braun voters will split to Nawrocki in the second round?
Looks like good news with the 'far right' candidate third, so knocked out and not making it to the run-off?
Refreshing, lately, for European countries with that electoral system.
and the nutcase that was too much for the far-right came fourth. From Braun's wikipedia page
Braun holds anti-American, anti-Ukrainian, antisemitic, anti-Zionist, and anti-LGBTQ views, and has been broadly described as far-right. He aligns with Traditionalist Catholicism and Polish nationalism. In 2023 he invaded a Holocaust lecture, destroyed equipment, and made more derogatory comments about Jews. Later that year he extinguished a Hanukkah menorah in the Sejm using a fire extinguisher, leading to his exclusion from the session. He is fiercely critical of Protestantism in Poland and has often debated Protestants in public. Braun is an advocate of Enthronement, which entails symbolically "enthroning" Christ as "king of Poland", and is a critic of democracy.

There’s a lot worse to drink than Tribute. Especially on a warm evening.

Indeed. Less aggressively grapefruity than some IPAs (and doesn’t call itself an IPA).
This weekend’s weather was indeed (in the Welsh Marches at least) Andean in its intensity of warm sun and cool shadows.
Aside from the worryingly frost-adjacent nights this is very good weather for vines. Minimal disease pressure during the important pre-flowering period.

Cleverer than that. Prosecco was (is) the name of the grape variety used by the vast majority of producers. They realised that a grape variety could be grown elsewhere - Australian Prosecco, Romanian Prosecco etc - so they cunningly renamed the grape variety to the much less widely used Glera, and made Prosecco the PDO name. Thereby protecting it from copycats.
That's brilliant
"Prosecco" is the perfect name for a celebratory fizzy wine. It's practically an orgasm in itself

Maybe so, they still need to die in a fire along with the copyright rules being severely curtailed

I really wouldn’t trust these exit polls but turnout in urban areas jumped much more in the second round than in rural areas so this should help Dan .
So things could turn ugly as he’s repeating the Trump playbook .
Second place definitely smelled fishy.
Local independent.

Across all 38 televote constituencies they got an average of 7.8 points.
Please can we have back the old days?

It was more deadly than expected because the blast went sideways, instead of straight up.
It cooled a large area east of the blast -- during the day -- and warmed the same area during the night: https://cliffmass.blogspot.com/2020/05/what-were-local-weather-impacts-of.html
(For the record: I've hiked up Mount Saint Helens twice since the blast.)

.. and I think that's it for tonight.
Anyway, I stopped this bad habit in October, and that is part of the reason, along with the lack of nibbles that I used to nibble whilst drinking this fizzy cocktail, I have lost about a stone.
Not quite as bad as his out and out pro Russian predecessor Georgiescu though.
Poland always gets a massive diaspora vote as well (they have never got less in the televote than from the juries).
Notice that China's new EV European HQ will be in..... Hungary.
Interestingly, in much of Eastern Europe, your classic real hardcore nationalists (the kind that would get @tim on the bounce in the Goode Olde Days) have turned firmly against irridentism.
His lead is widening as more results come in.
It looks as if he has won.
Favourite film Shakespeare In Love (never seen). Also Back To The Future.
Not a lot of people realise San Miguel ain't originally Spanish either. And I don't mean the brewed under licence in the UK, it was originally from the Philippines imported into Spain.
AD (PSD + CDS) well in front with 86-95 seats, PS on 53-62 and Chega on 51-60 so very close for second place.
For perfection - is it a hit in the Costas, yet?
You have to admit, a brilliant piece of work by the brand guys.

I nearly convinced an Indian friend to start brewing an IPA in India. Apparently, craft beer is beginning to take off there.
Refreshing, lately, for European countries with that electoral system.
1. Don't know what IPA stands for.
2. Have never had a can of McEwan's Export.

Dan is currently ahead of Simion by 587,000 votes with 88% counted.

Good
