Is it not more-or-less what the Conservative government promised with Rwanda and the Labour government with smashing the gangs and both of them by withdrawing the right to work?
Interesting that they give themselves the full five years to achieve it - whatever the realities or merits (or not) of the proposals I would imagine the time frame would make it appear more credible to some of those enticed by the prospect.
It will be precede by several years' spectacle of Trump trying to deport 5m from the US. That is not going to be pretty, or popular, I strongly suspect.
The recent polling shows that The Mad King doesn't have majority support for his purge, despite winning his campaign on it
Be careful what you wish for...
If Trump faced an imminent election, these findings might trouble him but he doesn't. ETA they should, however, concern Trump-lite politicians abroad, including here.
A few hours after an AP became the first big poll with Trump's approval rating under 40%, WaPo released the second, with his approval also at 39%.
some stuff that jumps out: —67% oppose ending birthright citizenship; 31% support. —70% oppose intervening in private universities; 28% support. —approval rating among independents is 33-58. —approval rating on the economy is 39-61. —53% of Republicans say federal judges shouldn't get to block POTUS
It's weird: I would support ending birthright citizenship. But I would obviously only do so via the democratic process. I'm very surprised - given my general (small l) liberal values - that I'm so out of step with US public opinion.
Because you haven't been brought up with it as part of the idea of what it is to be a US citizen ? That probably takes quite a bit to overcome.

No. It appears to propose abolishing asylum entirely.
The driver has been taken into custody after the incident shortly after 8pm local time on Saturday, police added.
People were in the area near 41st Avenue and Fraser Street for the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party, named after a national hero of the Philippines..
..Video posted on social media showed victims and debris strewn across a long stretch of road, with at least seven people lying immobile on the ground.
A black SUV with a crumpled front section could be seen in photos from the scene.
60 Chinese car brands....60....all with better tech than Western cars many available at rock bottom prices e.g. $15-20k for cars that cost $50-60k min from Western car companies. Tesla is f##ked, everybody put the real prestige brands are f##ked unless huge protectionism.
Discussing electric cars with friends who are in the market led to two conclusions for traditional luxury car marques. First, EV has its own cool factor, and we've seen this with Tesla replacing BMW or Mercedes. Second, EV provides its own luxury because the engine is quiet and does not vibrate.
But going forward, maybe there is more to life than price. It is not like everyone with an ICE car drove Skodas for the past several decades to save money. As EV ownership becomes normalised, the old values reassert themselves. Even without Elon trashing the brand, Tesla owners were beginning to question its looks and ergonomics, and you can see reviews of EVs where, as with ordinary cars, they talk about build quality, restricted views and unergonomic switch placement.

The smoothness extends to buses and ferries too. Big quality of life improvement.
Has anyone complained about Trump wearing a blue suit to a funeral?
Only about a million users on X.
And 30 million on bluesky?
Somewhat related - two people I know who work in digital marketing have given up on bluesky. Almost zero engagement in practice. (They aren't doing anything contentious - just regular brand management).
Bluesky is now declining - because it’s not fun. No arguments to be had, so it ends up as lefties doing purity tests on each other
Interestingly, X does face a rival - but it’s not Bluesky. It’s Threads. I know the gazette does work with Threads
Like so much of The Farage Show playbill that seems more a set of policies finely tuned to destroy the tory party than a realistic prospectus for expected government.
What does Kemi do? Blink myopically from behind her double glazing while saying nothing or woman up and match the Fukkers' Nacht und Nebel?

I didn’t realize there were 1.2 million illegal people in the country . Where does Farage get this figure from?

Probably also because rcs1000 knows that Aboard a) exists and b) does lots of things different and better than the US, which is something very few Americans can compute.

German intelligence has just arrested two suspected Russian spies, who were found with US Secretary of Defense Hegseth’s private phone number stored in their phones.
The suspects, identified as German-Russian nationals, are accused of scouting targets for potential attacks — including U.S. military facilities in Germany — according to a statement released Thursday by the Federal Public Prosecutor General in Karlsruhe. https://x.com/YourAnonCentral/status/1916268254009692190
I’m at an Italian cafe, sitting in the warm Bishkek sun, and the Italian owner is freaking out at his Italian manageress, and there is more gesticulating than I’ve seen in a month in the stans put together. Oddly solacing
Perhaps the stans will become our European homeland as we retreat from the ruins of the West

Trump's unpopularity only matters if he is weak enough to let it matter. One of the paradoxical aspects of the current US dynamic is that the worse things get for the Administration, the greater the temptation to go even more authoritarian.

Hegseth's office at the Pentagon is a SCIF
So they ran a wire out of the office connected to his iPhone so he can see Signal messages

It matters because there is an election next year. And there is only so much a would be autocrat can get away with in a democracy, within a given amount of time.

I read an article recently on Season 2 of Andor, suggesting it is blistering social commentary on the increasingly authoritarian Trump regime.
Let us ignore for a moment that it was filmed months ago and written years before Trump 2.0, the core argument is that is shows that evil regimes rely on hordes of faceless bureaucrats mindlessly implementing the fascist policies.
I think (maybe hope) there are signs in America that not everybody is going along with the scheme.
Enough have to do some real damage, but there has been a backlash, and if that grows then no matter how hard they try and tighten the screws, more will leak out the sides

Yes, we have electric buses here to take me from home to hospital and back. They also have phone chargers by every seat so Ed Davey might disapprove.
Which 3 political parties have a bicycle as their symbol?
Hint: they are in 3 different countries.
The only one that comes to mind is the Samajwadi Party in India
That's one of them. The other two are from countries nearby.
The use of the symbol made me think of the boot, ship, etc., in Monopoly. It's cooler than the use of numbers by political parties in Brazil. It's similarly for appealing to non-literate voters but it's also designed to appeal to people in a few different social classes. There's probably a reference to the Ashoka Chakra in there somewhere too. Clever piece of design.
I've had a look at this, and I can find more than 3 - but I had to dig, and they are not all current or from that area. I should have known this, at least in part.
And I think I may need to do some Getty Images rootling to find images.
The Samajwadi Party are socialists who made progress as a secular Government, but afaics were swept away by the populist-nationalist BJP. I'm interested that the symbol is clearly a hybrid of a man's bike, but with sit up and beg handlebars and a parcel rack, The symbol is vintage 1992.
Their origins were to do with the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya by a Hindu nationalist mob, which was also linked to the then incarnation of the BJP.
I make the others:
Bangladesh Awami League. Social Democratic Party (Mexico) - in the early 2000s. Then replaced by a slightly bizarre hybrid of a groping hand and a peace-dove. SDLP (Northern Ireland) - from 1970 to 2003. There the current symbol is some sort of weird egg whisk.

It feels like it sets a dangerous precedent to end birthright citizenship.
The country you were born into and know from birth should influence citizenship because those are your roots.
Of course, if you're smuggled as a pregnant foetus just to claim then that's a little bit different; I don't know how you police the difference - unless you say at least one parent must be an American citizen to claim at birth.
Is it not more-or-less what the Conservative government promised with Rwanda and the Labour government with smashing the gangs and both of them by withdrawing the right to work?
It's remarkable that so many liberals oppose deporting illegal immigrants.
One can only conclude they don't believe in borders.

I very much applaud the policy, but the Twitter comments (if that can be a measure of anything) are 3/4 negative, with 3/4 of the negative comments relating to Rupert Lowe/not fast enough/don't believe you. The Lowe incident really has damaged Yusuf (perhaps the entire party) who was doubtless given this announcement to make to bolster his popularity.
A vox pop in Runcorn had a lady very angry about Lowe. It surely would not be enough to waste a vote, but it is definitely there.

There are a few people stirring the pot, but a minority.
current Bluesky users base rate increase is about 1M a month, which can double following reactions to new policy implementations by the Trump administration
On the original topic, I followed TSEs tip and placed a £30 bet on Poilevre to lose his seat yesterday. Reading up some Canadian news today, there's a number of stories suggesting it's going to be a tight race, so there's great value in the 15/1 that was available at Ladbrokes (15/1 as they kindly gave me a one point 'boost' from 14/1). I say "was" as I just decided to put another £50 on - which was referred for approval but then granted. They immediately though cut the odds to 10/1, clearly as a result of my bet. It does show how with bookmakers even relatively small political bets can significantly move the market.
