    Creepy.
Especially as he’s addressing the military.

    "Creepy" Yeah. That's the word.

It's telling how the UK government will cut benefits and social spending in order to prolong a stalemated war Eastern Europe but won't say one word in defence of an ally who is having their territorial integrity credibly threatened.

I expect the US will get Greenland sooner or later. They already have it de facto because if Denmark told the US to clear out of Moonbase Alpha they wouldn't leave. Then what?
What's interesting about the statement is that Vance is dropping Trump in it there. He's able to turn a phrase, so he could easily have said "The President has stessed that Greenland is of vital strategic importance to the US" which wraps the whole thing in a mantle of statesmanship, but he's basically said that Trump is a nutter. Perhaps tired of batting for Trump all the time, but perhaps starting planning to get rid?
He seems to spend a lot of time dissing Trump. Look at that Signal chat.

To be fair, Trump seems to have picked him because of his - friendship - with DJT Jr, leading him to believe he's loyal to the Trump dynasty, rather than any real assessment of his merits.

Maybe he'll do a Cummings and claim he knew what Trump was like all along and went with him to limit the damage?

Perhaps Putin is correct in claiming the world is multipolar and he does hold all the cards. The implication is that the strong can grasp what they want. Ukraine for the Russians, Gaza for the Israelis, Taiwan for the Chinese or whatever whim takes them. Perhaps we should all get more.

    Really?

Thule (now called Pituffik) is one of the places (others in Canada, Norway I think) which has radar looking for incoming Soviet missiles.

So Vance is correct on this (particular) point.
The US used to claim they had satellites which could tell you which newspaper Saddam Hussein was reading from outer space....are we to believe we've gone from this to needing to position an American serviceman on Greenland with a pair of binoculars?

Talking of ICE, masked up agents pulling a legally-in-USA PhD student off the streets. She wrote a piece in the student newspaper criticising Israel. It's getting nastier.

Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish national and PhD student in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, was arrested outside her off-campus apartment. Then renditioned in violation of a Court Order.
    ...
Khanbabai said Ozturk had valid F-1 visa status as a PhD student. She has filed a habeas petition in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts for Ozturk’s release from detention.
    ...
“Unless otherwise ordered by the Court, petitioner shall not be moved outside the District of Massachusetts without first providing advance notice of the intended move,” wrote federal judge Indira Talwani in a three-page order to ICE on Tuesday night.
    ...
But shortly after the judge made that order, federal authorities transferred Ozturk to Louisiana, according to her attorney.

Serviceman with a bloody big radar, and a computer.

You can't calculate the trajectory of a ballistic missile with binoculars and a protractor.

It's not about freedom of speech. It's about control of speech.

There used to be a joke in the Soviet Union that both the Soviet Constitution and the US Constitution guaranteed free speech, the difference was the US guaranteed freedom after the speech as well.

That was before the Small One got into power.

Vance did know what Trump was like all along. Did he ever actually disown the "Hitler" comments?

Have pity on the history teachers of the latter part of this century... They are going to have to pretend that all this stuff makes sense in front of a room full of teenagers.

I teach politics as well. I assure you I don't bother to pretend this makes sense.

Just as I don't pretend the Kaiser's weird emotional outbursts including having the walls of Jerusalem knocked down have to make sense. We just remember the man was an unpleasant twat with serious personality disorders.

    An incredible letter:

Twenty (20) members of parliament have called for Britain to help build an INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT in Pakistan to help closen our ties with the Mirpuri community.

‘The Kashmiri diaspora in the UK […] have concerns regarding the journey times by road’

Nope - it's standard twitter twattery. The claim made is garbage. I have no idea whether tweeter is a lazy wazzock or a deliberate mouth breathing shit-stirrer. I wonder if any PBers will jump on this?

It's a letter from 20 UK MPs to the PM of Pakistan asking him to progress an airport used by their constituents who travel there to visit family. No proposal for UK involvement whatsoever - but gullibles will fall for it.

It's worth noting that the writer who tweeted the letter himself says that there is no call for UK finding.

It should be remembered that the UK (and UK construction companies) did rather well out of the construction of the Hong Kong international airport in the early 1990s, along with the associated (massive) bridge and other related infrastructure. So much so, in fact that the Chinese government complained the whole thing was just an attempt to get money out of the HK economy before the handover.

The airport was built in a *very* short timespan. It can be done, by us. So if the Pakistani government would like to pay us to make the airport: I'm all in favour... :)
Actually, the Chinese Government didn’t understand (at that point) financing of the airport in Hong Kong. They thought that taking on a lot of debt to build it was bad.

Then they saw the result - massive increase in capacity meant trade zoomed upward. Selling off the old airport for development paid for the new one.

It was a light bulb moment for them, in some ways
