Russian spy ring found in Great Yarmouth. And the MP for Great Yarmouth is..... Makes you fink, dunnit?
I was wondering if they were accelerating raids in case the US starts passing intel to Russia, but it turns out this was the court case and they were arrested a while back.
I am disappointed, but not surprised, to read Reform’s untrue and false allegations. Let me be abundantly clear - this investigation is based on zero credible evidence against me, as has been repeatedly stated by the neutral investigator. None has been provided.
I have cooperated and spoken at length with the KC they instructed, at great cost to the party, to investigate a minor staff matter.
I have just spoken to the KC. She is dismayed that this statement has been made, and reiterated that no evidence against me has been sent to her. She stated that this has been issued before the investigation has even started.
[...]
I do not believe that Reform members will be pleased to know that their membership fees are being spent on instructing expensive lawyers to investigate their own MPs, over matters that are entirely baseless and have been dealt with in the correct Parliamentary procedure, with HR’s full involvement and support. The staff member in question only raised a vexatious complaint once disciplinary proceedings had been initiated against them for serious wrongdoing. The other individual mentioned, dropped her appeal.
If they want to kick me out over false claims, they’ll have to finally present some credible evidence against me. There is none, as the KC has just told me. Again.
A complete inability to accept even the most mild constructive criticism without such a malicious reaction is not effective leadership.
This is our party as much as it is Nigel’s.
This is is a welcome distraction, a bit of no holds barred party infighing is always fun. Though if one side is vastly stronger than the other I'm not sure how much longer the entertainment will run.
I think Farage might have miscalculated this time. He's not used to running a party with this level of support so it will be much harder to manage internal opinion.
Referral to the police was a pretty big step, especially if nothing comes of it. But if several prominent people split where will they go? And where will the voters go - hundreds of candidates are already lined up for them to vote for, and they make a big play of being unlike any of the others (a bit too much, frankly).
What happens if Lowe refuses to go and its evident that the party's supporters back him over Farage? Even with the dodgy ownership structure, how could Farage maintain control? It's also much harder to marginalise someone who is an elected MP doing an effective job.
Where have Reform got to with their internal reforms? Under the old structure, Nigel could presumably do whatever he damn well wanted. Because, whatever his MP colleagues think, it literally was his party and not theirs.
Lowe is, incidentally, a rather good public speaker. If you like firmly rightwing no nonsense opinions expressed clearly, confidently, and articulately. Trouble is:
1. He's too old
and
2. He hasn't got Farage's rizz
I can imagine he has a loyal chunk of Reform activists who prefer him to Nige, but it won't be enough if it comes to a shootout
What Reform desperately need is a cadre of younger sassier telegenic new politicians. That is what all the successful populist rightwing parties in the EU have done - from Meloni to Bardella etc. Indeed that is probably exactly what reform needs: a younger WOMAN
I asked reasonable and constructive questions of Nigel Farage and Reform's leadership, following months of pushing for progress behind closed doors.
The day after, I find a knife in my back over false allegations. Whip suspended.
That tells you everything you need to know.
It tells me he apparently knew nothing about Farage and how he operates before he joined the party. He's got a likeable enough aura to him, but he didn't exactly hide why he left UKIP and set up his own party. One where the Leader knew to step aside the instant he wanted the role back.

You mean he likes performative cruelty so should go down well with the party .
(((Dan Hodges))) @DPJHodges · 9m Some people getting very excited about the Reform civil-war. But I suspect there will only be one winner. As I said, Rupert Lowe has had his head turned by Musk. But to the public Nigel Farage basically is Reform. Don't see how Lowe comes out on top.

Holly Vallance?
You can have Suella and are welcome to her.
No they need someone HOT
Holly Vallance is HOT (for an older lady type)
I very much enjoyed her performance in the movie DOA.
I look forward to Rupert Lowe standing for the National Bocialists in North Minehead.
These types always set up their own parties, they cannot play nice with others (Farage cannot either, but gets big enough support to get people on board).

Jenrick seems to be the default leader in waiting. The IDS. The Corbyn. The Kinnock. The second leader after election defeat.
I think he would do better than Kemi now. I think the avuncular Cleverly would do better still in the current global climate, but the members wouldn’t stand for that.
David Corn @davidcorn.bsky.social · 24m Deregulating the chicken industry when bird flu is a threat sounds really damn stupid. Are they trying to kill us?
Spectator had a long piece last week looking at how professional Reform was becoming and introducing all the slick new backroom aides who were going to get a grip and put the party into power.
I don’t think Jenrick would do well at all. For every “very online” loon like Leon he’d attract, he’d turn away many more.
Jenrick got Labour to crap themselves just yesterday, and reinforced the Two Tier Keir narrative, with one deft bit of politicking (and observant aides, I am guessing). He made Sabana Mahmood scramble, awkwardly
He is simply better at politics than Kemi B (and I like Kemi, she just hasn't got the chops). Indeed he seems to be the only Tory who is capable of taking it to Labour - can you name any one thing that any of the others have done? They are pitiful
Someone like Jenrick is what the Tories need now, urgently. A fighter. With a cruel and ruthless streak. They need someone determined, ambitious, and with a striking resemblance to the leader singer of the Killers. That seems to be Jenrick
If you can name an obviously superior candidate that is right now a Tory MP without making everyone roll on the floor with derisory laughter then go ahead. We can rule out Cleverly for a start, because lol
Trump 'finding it more difficult to deal with Ukraine' - and says he believes Putin
Ukraine has to "get on the ball and get the job done", Donald Trump says now as he answers questions on the war.
"They're bombing the hell out of Ukraine... I'm finding it more difficult, frankly, to deal with Ukraine," he adds.
Russia has "all the cards", he says, and says it "may be easier" to deal with Moscow, despite their position.
Asked if he believes Vladimir Putin when he says he wants peace, Trump says "yeah... I believe him".
On the one hand Trump doesn't think the Ukrainians have any agency; on the other it's all their fault.
I know we'll never get any consistency or logic out of the man but he sure hits you in the stomach.
I have never been more angry at a politician. You can sense it on here and elsewhere can’t you? Trump is a #### for what he does, but also makes us feel ashamed to feel so powerless and unable to tell the US “sod off, we’ll take it from here”.
I voted for Brexit and don’t regret that vote, but my god I’m in favour of a coordinated rearmament programme and Europe showing Russia up as the tin pot little country it is. Putin needs to be put in his box, and the U.S. left alone on the naughty step.

It feels like a turning point, and it is far from certain it will all be ok in the end.
The Reform Party described the arrival of their five MPs as being like Reservoir Dogs and we scoffed and said they had only seen the opening scenes, but they were actually right about how it would play out.
The American constitution was designed to prevent a King exercising prerogative powers.
Trumpski has shown it is inadequate to the task.
Assuming the republic survives, I am mildly curious what attempts they will make to Trump-proof it in the future
Trump has advanced the opinion before, and several Justices agree, that the powers of the Presidency are essentially without restriction. Seems counter to the whole founding narrative of the nation to me, but they're the ones with the power.
Tariffs. You put them on and that's a story but it soon fades. No good. How do I squeeze maximum ongoing eyeballs out of it? Easy. I announce and unannounce, put them on, take them off, first this country and then that one, have a row, have a phone call, have another presser, speak to Fox, fire up Truth Social, maybe suspend those tariffs, or maybe not, or maybe just partially, yabba yabba yabba ...
Trump just pledged new tariffs on Canada, either for lumber and dairy (or maybe everything, it's unclear) -- as soon as today, or on Monday or Tuesday. He's speaking in the Oval Office still.

Yep, I’m holding a sell position that’s now doing rather nicely. The DJE is down again today, currently, as well.
Tesla soared after Trump’s win, from a price already inflated on the assumption of continued sales growth. If sales are plummeting around the world, as early data suggests, they’ve got some way to fall yet.
I’m always too cowardly to make big calls on time. I thought about bunging everything into bonds and money market funds a couple of weeks ago but chickened out. Now it’s too late. My late exits and late re-entries during both the Eurozone crisis and the start of the Ukraine war cost me a lot.
Trying to market time is the worst.
I just leave it to Cazenove and don’t think about my portfolio for months at a time. Far more relaxing.

Conservative peer, Lord Hamilton: Jews should pay for their own Holocaust memorial because they have "an awful lot of money"

Kemi Badenoch: "Lord Hamilton misspoke and he's apologised and I think that should be the end of the matter."
I don't think so.
I was only teasing. It was clear from your mad blockquoting that you didn't mean to say, of your own volition, that mad thing about Jews
It is a bizarrely clumsy remark from this Tory. That said, I honestly don't see why London needs a Holocaust memorial that takes up precious parkland in the centre of town
I agree. Did the UK actually commit the Holocaust, or even allow its Jews to be rounded up?
No.
Why can’t we have a memorial to Chartists. Or, better, just nothing. The Palace of Westminster is a powerful memorial unto itself.
A memorial is meant to stand the test of time, the Palace will crumble or burn in the next 10 years whilst the MPs piss about pretending it will magically becoming cheaper to fix if they delay making a decision and decide to stay in the building during building works.
Something that was great in the 19th century and a symbol of resistance in the Second World War, but which has crumbled and decayed since and is now a shadow of its former self? A hollow shell that needs serious investment and reinvention to succeed in the new century, including to defend it from outside attack?
The Reform Party described the arrival of their five MPs as being like Reservoir Dogs and we scoffed and said they had only seen the opening scenes, but they were actually right about how it would play out.
So we are at the "Stuck in the middle with you" scene where Michael Madsen is left alone with the cop in the warehouse.
He's a constant reminder that arrogant and crude bullies can and do get ahead in life, more often than not. And he's doing it with international consequences. It's like he's designed to make us feel impotent and depressed, unless someone is simultaneously a fan of a particular kind of american economic policy and Putin support (many are one or the other, not both).
It feels like a turning point, and it is far from certain it will all be ok in the end.
The striking thing is that Twitter, and Maga, has become home to thousands, if not millions of similar bullied. You can feel the exultation and exhileration.
Finally, they believe, might is being proved to be right. Cry harder, liberals ! Lol !

I agree he is a very effective tactician. I just think he is cryptonite to most of middle England.
Well maybe, but the TLDR of my commentary on this is that the Tories are not overblessed with alternatives, and Jenrick shows fight, smarts and political cunning. He is also good at social media
Who else? HYUFD talks about "Mel Stride". I don't even know what a Mel Stride IS
He has the amazing talent for me to forget his name and appareance 5 minutes after I've seen him.
lol yes exactly
In fact you can say this, unfortunately, about the entire Tory front bench. They are instantly forgettable in the most ephemeral way. I'm not even sure who the Shadow Cancellor is. Or Shadow Foreign Sec. Do they exist? Is one of them a Mel Stride? I understand that if you are reduced to a rump of a party by a calamitous election your talent pool will be quite shallow, but nonetheless they have done an amazing job of sourcing nothing but tadpoles
The one single Tory who makes me sit up and listen - because he actually says sharp clever combative things, sometimes - is Jenrick

I have a horrible sinking feeling in the not too distant future the Houses of Parliament will burn like Notre Dame, only the damage will be so great it cannot be restored. Taking with it Westminster Hall, one of the most remarkable buildings on earth, inside one of the most remarkable buildings on earth
It will be a tragedy for the nation and for humanity, and all of it avoidable, except that we are governed by imbeciles

The lights are going out all over the world.
Let's hope not, but I agree it's not looking great.
I’ve known @RupertLowe10 for 45+ years. Worked for him years ago, the only girl in the office. He’s old school, the consummate gentleman. Courteous, clever, driven, humorous, humane. A patriot and idealist. A family man with a happy, close family. He’s found his vocation as an MP. Great Yarmouth’s lucky to have him. I don’t believe the vicious manufactured nonsense from Reform for a split second.
If Reform implodes this is a ramrkable opportunity for the Tories, but they need Jenrick in charge not Kemi. Jenrick is the one with the rightwing nous to attract Reform voters and win a GE
Actually I’m beginning to see Kemi as a political pragmatist in the making - after a quick succession of Conservative leaders who were out of touch, opportunistic bullshitters, as Jenrick clearly would be in spades.
Kemi has already started distancing Conservatives from Boris Johnson’s hard Brexit, speaking out on decision to pursue Brexit without plan for economic growth outside EU. This is very important because there is no chance of a majority without bringing back the lost voters angry at Brexit mistakes.
I can see Kemi evolving a more realistic line on things like the Triple Lock, Rwanda Scheme, Chagos Deal, the Channel Crossings “invasion” too, in the coming months and years, rather than overdoing the “populist style” all out opposition to every government position.
This is important because just echoing overly simplistic and dishonest populist positions, merely sells the “real thing” not how you differ yourself. The Conservatives greatest advantage over Reform is they can at least go into next general election with sane, pragmatic policies and credible manifesto for government - the best Reform can do is continue as the non of the above protest vote (in era of income and public services erosion) with no sensible workable policies, they currently don’t have any.
Kemi’s PMQ difficulties stemmed from rushing in on poorly researched gimmicks, pushed by the Daily Mail and Telegraph in hours before PMQ. Jenrick will certainly be even quicker and dafter at doing that, like he (and the Daily Mails) proved this week, trying to tie long in the making (under the Tories) sentencing guidelines to the Musk flavoured two tier Starmer gimmick line.
I’m now confident the Conservatives will get less GE votes under Jenrick than Kemi, not least as doing away with yet another leader for yet another change, is sure to hit credibility. Jenrick lost, has no choice but to sit tight for years sucking it up.
Saviour over the see he isn’t. That’s Claire Coutinho.

Jenrick, I find to be somewhat disconcerting. Look at his facial expressions when he's not talking.
Is he human? Or is he dancer?
One thing he is not, is avuncular. Only one contender for that title, in either Tories or Labour, and that’s Cleverly. Is Kemi avuncular, nope. Keir? Hardly. Davey? Not quite, though I could imagine him as an uncle. Farage? Almost, but too fash. The last major party leader to be remotely avuncular was Alex Salmond.
If I were a 10 year old boy I could think of no politician better to take me go-karting than the avuncular Cleverley.

Living up to the potential was always going to be a challenge. Despite what was being claimed at the time, I think most commentators acknowledged the new rulers would probably not be all sweetness and light.

Hopefully the erstwhile Reform supporters on here are suitably shamefaced.
lol. I support Reform. Trust me I’m not feeling an iota of shame. Would you honestly expect me to?
You did criticise Farage's Putin stance during the 2024 GE.
Yes, that's why I didn't vote for them. His statement on Putin was UGH
However Farage has been better on Ukraine/Trump since...
But he is a problem for Reform as much as he is an asset. Indeed the problem is, in part, that he IS such an asset. He overshadows everyone else, and he has political skills none of the others possess. He IS Reform to most voters
That's fine if you are essentially a one issue pressure group like UKIP: they were remarkably succcessful at achieving their one objective. Brexit. They did it
But Farage is trying to grow a real political party here, that can credibly compete for the next GE, the trouble is to do this, Reform itself must outgrow Farage
On the island they’re trying to find candidates for the local elections, now postponed to next year. But only a handful of their aged and eccentric membership want to stand, and many of those want to be promised they won’t win - because they don’t actually want to do the work
They want to jump from unserious rabble to semi-authoritarian rule without the hard bits in between.
I think the UK public aren't sufficiently foolish, in sufficiently large numbers, to fall for ut.

I know we'll never get any consistency or logic out of the man but he sure hits you in the stomach.
Really unfortunate first line there, which I am deliberately immortalising with this quick reply
Sure. I'll complete my other comment.
Conservative peer, Lord Hamilton: Jews should pay for their own Holocaust memorial because they have "an awful lot of money"
Conservative Party spokesman: "Completely unacceptable and flagrantly antisemitic"
The Palace of Westminster is a powerful memorial unto itself, which actually needs several billions of investment.
Quite. There comes a point when ANOTHER Holocaust Memorial is a kind of expensive, pointless virtue signalling in black marble. A waste of money and time and a symptom of our footling, declining age. Not least because we ALREADY HAVE a memorial
So, the utility group shortlist is the Akita, French bulldog, Lhasa Apso, miniature schnauzer, toy poodle, Tibetan spaniel, the Mexican hairless dog, the Shiba Inu, and the Keeshond.
I reckon the Lhasa may get it.
And the winner is…the miniature schnauzer from Croatia, the audience favourite. The Lhasa is runner up, third for the Tibetan spaniel, with the Shiba in fourth

Holly Vallance?
I asked reasonable and constructive questions of Nigel Farage and Reform's leadership, following months of pushing for progress behind closed doors.
The day after, I find a knife in my back over false allegations. Whip suspended.
That tells you everything you need to know.

Some people getting very excited about the Reform civil-war. But I suspect there will only be one winner. As I said, Rupert Lowe has had his head turned by Musk. But to the public Nigel Farage basically is Reform. Don't see how Lowe comes out on top.
It’s a one-man band.
Only real idiots profess to support them.
Holly Vallance is HOT (for an older lady type)
Pork markets are skyrocketing.
I know we'll never get any consistency or logic out of the man but he sure hits you in the stomach.
One for Leon to try and puzzle out.
"Jews should pay for their own Holocaust memorial because they have "an awful lot of money""
He should be Rob Lowe, Robert Everett or Rupert Brooke, but he"s Ian Duncan-Smith.
Heritage is one.
I think he would do better than Kemi now. I think the avuncular Cleverly would do better still in the current global climate, but the members wouldn’t stand for that.
For every “very online” loon like Leon he’d attract, he’d turn away many more.

Look at his facial expressions when he's not talking.
Jews have the money to ‘pay for own’ Holocaust memorial, says Tory peer

Deregulating the chicken industry when bird flu is a threat sounds really damn stupid. Are they trying to kill us?

I voted for Brexit and don’t regret that vote, but my god I’m in favour of a coordinated rearmament programme and Europe showing Russia up as the tin pot little country it is. Putin needs to be put in his box, and the U.S. left alone on the naughty step.
It is a bizarrely clumsy remark from this Tory. That said, I honestly don't see why London needs a Holocaust memorial that takes up precious parkland in the centre of town
Everyone talks all the time about the threat for Tories of Reform but they also lost swathes to Liberals.
Trumpski has shown it is inadequate to the task.
Assuming the republic survives, I am mildly curious what attempts they will make to Trump-proof it in the future
I just think he is cryptonite to most of middle England.
The Reform Party described the arrival of their five MPs as being like Reservoir Dogs and we scoffed and said they had only seen the opening scenes, but they were actually right about how it would play out.
Did the UK actually commit the Holocaust, or even allow its Jews to be rounded up?
No.

Who else? @HYUFD talks about "Mel Stride". I don't even know what a Mel Stride IS
I just leave it to Cazenove and don’t think about my portfolio for months at a time. Far more relaxing.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyde_Park_Holocaust_Memorial
Enough
Finally, they believe, might is being proved to be right. Cry harder, liberals
! Lol !
I wonder if there’s a metaphor in there?
I'm assuming Farage is the cop.
As we saw yesterday
It will be a tragedy for the nation and for humanity, and all of it avoidable, except that we are governed by imbeciles
Kemi has already started distancing Conservatives from Boris Johnson’s hard Brexit, speaking out on decision to pursue Brexit without plan for economic growth outside EU. This is very important because there is no chance of a majority without bringing back the lost voters angry at Brexit mistakes.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c17edyz11nno
I can see Kemi evolving a more realistic line on things like the Triple Lock, Rwanda Scheme, Chagos Deal, the Channel Crossings “invasion” too, in the coming months and years, rather than overdoing the “populist style” all out opposition to every government position.
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2025/jan/17/kemi-badenoch-pensions-triple-lock-means-test-alarm-tories
Where is this? And why is it so remarkable?
Nicht der googlissimi
I promise this is a good one
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/czxnwrqey4go
One thing he is not, is avuncular.
If I were a 10 year old boy I could think of no politician better to take me go-karting than the
avuncular Cleverley.

I think the UK public aren't sufficiently foolish, in sufficiently large numbers, to fall for ut.
