    No, should a deal fail to be reached it will be down to the intransigence of Eurocrats prepared to sacrifice the interests of EU member states in order to try and continue with the political goal of ever deeper EU integration. That means trying to deliver a Brexit with the fewest possible benefits to the UK, so that others are dissuaded from following, and if possible trying to dissuade the UK from that course altogether by taking a wholly intransigent stance in the hope that we will blink first.

    Here is an excellent article from John May, who also concludes that the EU's stance is governed by politics and not trade.
