There are several councils across the United Kingdom whose names do not give you much of a clue as to where they are in the world. For instance, just where is Babergh in East Anglia, does anyone know where the Vale of the White Horse is, and of course Uttlesford.

Hmmm... this doesn't look too bad at all. Other than the fact that we've all get very silly avatars.
• Disqus = Susan Boyle

Vanilla = Kimberly Walsh
• Huzzah, I changed my avatar.
• PongPong Posts: 4,693
Does it auto-refresh?

Er... how do you do the picture thing?

How do you get an avatar?
• DavidLDavidL Posts: 50,758
edited March 2013
Oh that easy !

And we can edit too
• To change your profile pic, click on your own name, it'll bring up your profile, far right side, it says "Edit Profile", click that, then in the new tab, on the left hand side, it gives you a "Change my picture" option, and the rest is straight forward.

• DavidLDavidL Posts: 50,758
I take it that it is default newest first?

RCS: Can we change direction to oldest first - better when doing a page refresh.
• This looks promising - Well done to Robert. I'll have to get my red rose of Lancashire back up.
• CarolaCarola Posts: 1,805
Thanks for this. Disqus was a 'mare.
• AveryLPAveryLP Posts: 7,815
Cannot sign on using google account.

Not a complaint, just a note.
• PongPong Posts: 4,693
This system has quite a good back-door messaging system, too.

Good for betting tips etc.
• Can we also give a big thank you to Max, who suggested using this Vanilla commenting format.
• JamesMJamesM Posts: 221
I am rubbish at reading those anti-spam devices. It took three attempts to get signed up because of that! Looks good this new system.
• philiphphiliph Posts: 4,704
I made it. It seems to need registration
• Pong, yes it is, got your message, it works.
• NeilNeil Posts: 7,983
Oh, we can message each other, settling bets just became easier!

• CarolaCarola Posts: 1,805
Okay, the comments are reading top to bottom now. Not sure if I've changed that for me or not.
• Sunil_PrasannanSunil_Prasannan Posts: 48,909
Yes, I hade to make a new account with this Vanilla setup.
• NeilNeil Posts: 7,983
I know we all have an opinion but I think it was easier when the newest comments were on top - less scrolling after refreshing.
• GrandioseGrandiose Posts: 2,323
As a member of the Facebook generation, I measure my social worth in likes. This will not do. I demand to be liked. LIKE ME. LIIIKKKEEE MEEE.
• rcs1000rcs1000 Posts: 53,766
Yes: big thanks from me to Max too.
• NeilNeil Posts: 7,983
Oh, now when I refresh it's coming back to the bottom, scrap last comment.
• Scott_PScott_P Posts: 51,453
Outstanding!
• So far so good
• rcs1000rcs1000 Posts: 53,766
OK: who wants oldest first, who wants newest first?
• JamesMJamesM Posts: 221

I am glad the comments are reading from top to bottom, far easier. Only downside I can see at the moment is that it is compulsory registration to post which may put off lurkers from getting involved.
• Mick_PorkMick_Pork Posts: 6,530
Wow, new page required already. I can't see that staying long.
• DavidLDavidL Posts: 50,758
My treasure chest is back. Could someone mention my name. I want to see how the notification thing works.
• NeilNeil Posts: 7,983
Do Vanilla forums need seed money? I foresee healthy returns if disqus is their main competition.
• @davidL

Let us see if it works
• PongPong Posts: 4,693
@neil

Just press the "End" key. It works best for me. Is there any option of post numbering?

A test of formatting...

bold

italic

blockquote

EDIT: Yes, that works.
• CarolaCarola Posts: 1,805
I think newest first is better re scrolling.
• Robert, newest on top works much much better.
• philiphphiliph Posts: 4,704
Thanks, and well done tech team. This looks just right. Not too far right.

@rcs1000 (bit of a test to see how the notice thing works)

I would vote newest first.
• Sunil_PrasannanSunil_Prasannan Posts: 48,909
Overall, looks better than Disqus ever did!
• Really good. Webpage refresh reverts to the position in the thread you were at. Perhaps we used to have that-after the past week or so with Disqus I can't remember anymore
• NextNext Posts: 826
Oldest at top better: because it gives a more natural way of reading, and when you refresh you come back to where you were (roughly) and can carry on reading down.
• Scott_PScott_P Posts: 51,453
Newest first is the work of the Devil. AV would be better than that...
• MarkSeniorMarkSenior Posts: 4,699
This is better , not so stressful to read , follow and post .
Re today's by elections .
Havering Gooshays , the Ratepayer's chances are lessened by the fact that there are 2 rival Ratepayer's partys contesting the byelection .
Islington Junction is technically an Independent ( elected as a Lib Dem ) defence as the resigning councillor left the Lib Dems following an internal party dispute over parking charges in the ward .
UKIP are contesting neither of the North Dorset wards . The Stours is a Con/Lab contest and Lodbourne Con/LD/Lab .
• Blue_rogBlue_rog Posts: 2,019
Wow the password requirements are a bit draconian. Congrats on the new system. Anything is better than Disqus
• DavidLDavidL Posts: 50,758
@TheScreamingEagles

Yep it did.
• So, fewer bells and whistles, more popular support - some people would draw political conclusions from that.
• HYUFDHYUFD Posts: 116,709
Easier to see comments than Disqus, rather more difficult to log in
• PulpstarPulpstar Posts: 75,841
Out with the old (badger) in with the horse (Ginger) ;p
• JamesMJamesM Posts: 221
I'm a conservative so like tradition. Oldest first for me, I find it easier to follow a discussion.
• NeilNeil Posts: 7,983
@MarkSenior

Ah, yes, the by-elections. I rarely say this (as by-elections arent our thing) but kinda hopeful of a 2nd place in Islington to help with positioning ahead of 2014.
• I'm sorry, my ego needs a like button.

All those likes I got, I need them.

• boulayboulay Posts: 3,769
Poor Harry hayfield - writes a huge article on local elections and we are all writing about our exciting new anti-discus!
• Getting rid of new Disqus is better than a Cook ton. Though I would accept getting both.

Plain vanilla or waitrose organic madagascan?
• @Boulay.

Harry back in May 2009, wrote a very well researched piece on the up coming local elections.

About 2mins after the thread was published, the Telegraph broke the expenses story.
• Mick_PorkMick_Pork Posts: 6,530
If only some had been as vehement with their diqus dislike way back? ;^)

Then all this unpleasantness could have been avoided.

What I really liked was the old disqus before they screwed it up. The reply function was excellent in linking comments together so that you could understand what was being responded to, the likes (and no dislikes) was good, and I came to terms with the page length eventually.

Such a shame they screwed up a reasonable product.
• Mick_PorkMick_Pork Posts: 6,530
You aren't choosing to proclaim Lansley a 'genius' Seth?

Some things don't change after all. ;)
• AnneJGPAnneJGP Posts: 2,869
Thought I'd been cast into outer darkness there - posted a comment during the post-Disqus pre-Vanilla phase & not only did it disappear into the ether, I couldn't find a way to log in to Vanilla. But then there was one - many thanks Robert, Max, et al.
• philiphphiliph Posts: 4,704
Newest / Oldest, as it appears to refresh to the point you were looking at in the thread, it is less worrying which you end up with.

I like newest first, but not major concern f the system handles you well, as it appears to. So far.
• rcs1000rcs1000 Posts: 53,766
@DavidL - I completely agree. I liked the ability to see what exact point a poster was responding to. But I hated *new* Disqus, with its awful 'dislike' button.
• PulpstarPulpstar Posts: 75,841

Aww the nose of my dog has been cut off in my avatar :-(
• nigel4englandnigel4england Posts: 4,800
Had to change my username slightly as it wouldn't let me log in.
• Oldest first for me : mainly use Mercury on an IPad, which has a go to bottom button.

I suspect the lack of a like button might encourage a bit more constructive criticism. The spammers never seem to be put off by the scores of dislikes, so they'll just carry on. Perhaps they'll need widgeting again?
• AveryLPAveryLP Posts: 7,815
Where is tim?

I have a sub-prime mortgage to sell.

@rcs1000 I liked the ability to see what exact point a poster was responding to.

You can still copy and paste the point to make a comment easier to read.
• philiphphiliph Posts: 4,704
Mischief time, who is going to register as Tim?
• Blue_rogBlue_rog Posts: 2,019
@rcs1000 9.02 pm

Any reason for not choosing Invisio? Not a criticism just a query. You can reply (and use smilies) with that one :-)
• Please can somebody tell a cat how to do the blue @ reply thing. :)

There are a lot of goodies that Robert is holding back from giving us.

I guess there is a lot of work on configuring templates to deliver them.
• surbitonsurbiton Posts: 13,549
Newest First ? Do I have a choice and how ?
• PulpstarPulpstar Posts: 75,841
@rcs1000 I got used to the nestedness, and the dislike button. But the misordering of posts took the biscuit.
